40GB PS3 run cooler and quieter
Engadget is reporting that the new 40GB PS3 - which is on sale right now in Europe and Australia and which will be released in early November in America and Japan - is built quite differently from its 60GB and 80GB brethren. It seems Sony has done a bit of cleaning up of the internals of the machine by utilising a new motherboard and smaller components. Even the Cell itself has had a bit of a spruce up and the chips inside the 40GB SKUs are of the 65nm variety.
This means that the 40GB PS3 runs quieter, cooler and at a lower power consumption than its big brothers. For audio-visual-philes this can only be a good thing when the PS3 is being used as a media hub. We've never had a problem with our PS3s making noise, but we're always happy to see technology get improved.

So does that mean there's a major difference regarding power between the 60 and the 40?

*Snarky comment about BC*

@1: some kotaku comment on the same topic said something from 200 watts down to 120 watts.

@5: Haven't they fixed that already? If they haven't, just sell your old, inferior TV and get a new HDTV. Swing for a 1080p. No harm in spoiling yourself. (Well, okay, technically there is, but oh well)

That's really good news if you are using in mostly for blu ray watching. No one likes a loud player when the movie requires silence. Not that it was evel loud to begin with but hey, what can you really do with hardware thats already rock-solid.

can you switch the 40 gb harddisc for a bigger one?
Gunegune @ Oct 30th 2007 5:56PM
@Nelis .W
Yes, of course. You can find some for pretty cheap at newegg.com. http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Drives

@8, yes, the PS3 uses standard SATA laptop drives. Swap out to your heart's content. There are instructions on how to do so here: http://www.gamepro.com/sony/ps3/games/features/127009.shtml

I'll buy one when they add a $5 scaler chip so I can play in HD on my 1080i set. Seriously, new motherboard and no scaler?
Whatever, no sale.
Andir3.0 @ Oct 30th 2007 7:14PM
And there are instructions in the manual that ships with the PS3 if you don't just ignore that stuff and throw it away.
John @ Oct 30th 2007 9:56PM
Wow, so they quietly have already begun manufacturing the 65Nm boards?
The scaler is in the upgrades, crankBAIT and has been, for some time, now.
What's weird, is your hostility. Not happy with the 360? Not happy with the Wii?
If you eat healthy meals regularly, you'll find your blood-sugar balance is better, and you won't be so cranky, all the time.

Wait a second... it runs COOLER??! How the hell are people going to heat their living rooms in the winter?? Doesn't Sony realise that today's electronics ARE the new fireplace for the 21st century??!! >=[ Makes me MAD!!!

Apparently the 40GB model comes with the 65nm process Cell processor. That said, the RSX is still 90nm on the PS3 I believe.....I'd hold off until next year when it is also 65nm and in production.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Nov 1st 2007 6:38AM
@steve sway: Why? I just bought a 60GB model yesterday and it runs a LOT cooler than I thought. I'm very, very impressed. The PS3 won't likely get another price drop soon, so now is a good time to get the system.
My 360... not so impressed. It's a Falcon, and still the whole side of the machine gets very hot. Plus, I was hoping the 65nm chip would mean a smaller power supply, and that didn't happen. I'll probably get PS3 versions of my games just so I don't have to deal with all the heat and noise I'd have to put up with on the 360.

I just got a PS3 80G. It is really loud, I can hear it from 5 meters. Compared to my 3Ghz Intel Duo machine, WII and the refrigriator, PS3 is loudest in the house. What gives, is this expected?
