PSP firmware v3.72 available now via Network Update [UPDATE]

A new firmware update is available for the PSP. Version 3.72 doesn't seem to add much functionality, other than expanding support for PlayStation Network titles. All in all, a pretty lackluster update - those without a PS3 needn't even bother. Sure, Sony could have snuck in some extra secret stuff, but we're betting not. If you want it, however, go and get it. A PS3 update is expected soon and PSP v3.72 does lend credence to that theory. We're remaining cautious, however. We'll let you know more as it happens.

[UPDATE] The EU PlayStation website has confirmed that firmware v3.72 also has support for the PS3's Remote Start feature which will be included with PS3 firmware v2.00.

Thse kind of things are the things that can sink the psp directly to the toilet, but not because the psp perse, but because how sony do the managment of it.

They don't release good and worthy updates, they could better their job so no everyone depends on customs firmware.

Likely never. Since m33 turned out to be DAX, the future of CFW frankly looks bleak. Hopefully, either a new team will step up, DAX will come back again, or Sony makes their OFW function more like CFW.

The UK site says v3.72 also adds support for "[Remote Start]* of the PS3 system under [Remote Play]."

Also, 3.72's changes are too small to need a new CFW, if someone was actually going to make one.

Notice that [Remote Start] is supported on PS3's with ***FIRMWARE 2.00*** or higher. A nice feature for media center use

I heard a rumor that the PSN added support allows for multi-disc games. If that is true, let's hope for some FFVII-FFIX love :)

It puzzles me when people talk like this. Sony is doing great with their PSP because of what it does. Every time they need to update the firmware of the PSP for various reasons, though, there are always people to complain. If you use custom firmware, Sony isn't losing any money. Do you really think that the PSP is so horrible as it is that every firmware update needs massive changes?

@linebeginstoblur: a pointed question, but I'll answer it anyway. No and Yes. No to it being horrible, and yes to all update adding something worthwhile to all users, not just to the zombies that bought the PS3.

I bought a PSP and don't own a PS3, yet Sony has consistently been adding features to those who have a PS3.

My question to you is: why do our(speaking for PSP owners who don't own a PS3) grievances with the PSP features deserved to be ignored in favor of the whims of a scant few PS3 owners?

What I meant was that, the way that people seem to act sometimes, it almost seems like no one enjoys their systems for what they already feature and if there's any small security update, then people make Sony the enemy, when really, everything is fine for me.

I do own a PS3, but for what I do with the PSP, there aren't many features I use that require the PS3. I am looking forward to Remote Start, but I bought both systems long before I thought that was a possibility.

Sony is working on it though. You can still download demos of PSP games online and features like music and video playback, photo viewer, and Internet browser have been implemented for the PSP for quite some time now. I don't see what there is to complain about. Sony's working on bringing the PlayStation Store to the PSP, and other than Remote Play, I can't think of many other features that Sony's "cheating" non-PS3 owners. As a PSP and PS3 owner, I can tell you that, from my perspective, I feel like Sony supports each system about equally, so I don't know why you feel like you're being treated unfairly. It's free to upgrade, so just because there's an update with not many things doesn't mean it will hurt you. Just pretend you never heard about it.

I do! Custom firmware was just too much dicking around for how much I utilized it. I like the PSP for what it is, a portable powerhouse with a load of extra features that I actually get use from. Any extra features that make their way through firmware updates are just icing on the cake.

I do not own/want a PS3, and there is no feature they could add to the PSP to make that change. That still doesn't bother me that they release PSP/PS3 related updates. Really, I don't understand why that would bother anyone.

Sure, I'd love to make ISO's of my old PSOne games and play them on my PSP using official firmware with no extra steps, but I'm not holding my breath, because it'll never happen.

I do! It is strange that people get angry over new features, though. Just because they cannot benefit from a few particular features, that makes them "bad". I'll take whatever updates they're willing to hand out to me. It's free, after all.

i wish Everyday Shooter was playable through remote play. i can't think of any other reason to use the remote play on my PS3 except to download and install demos while i do something else in another room. only other things i can think of are DVD playback but im not sure if that would ever be possible (since it doesnt work now).

that said, this Remote Start will be cool to me for like 2 times when i test it out and then i probably won't use it again.....unless they can let me play Everyday Shooter over it (they can do it with Lair, why not this?)

At first I thought you were a non-console gamer, then you say own PS1 games just after vehemently saying you will never own a PS3. Did the PS1 days turn you off console gaming? You should give it another shot. True, handhelds are great nowadays, but nothing beats a console.

The usefulness of RemotePlay definitely depends on what you routinely do.

For me, this is a big deal (once PS3 2.0 comes out) because I store my complete music library on MP3 at home plus lots of videos. There's no way that stuff will even come close to fitting on a memory stick. So I like to use my PSP at work to listen to my music library over the internet. It's really annoying to have to remember to turn on the PS3 and put it in remote-play mode.

It'll also be great for my next vacation. The PSP is already a must-have for any trip, however short. But on a 2-week vacation I run out of movies and music (I gotta take a break from games every so often), so I'm looking forward to accessing my home library from across the globe. While it would be interesting to play more PS3 games on PSP via remote-play, I honestly don't care that much about that since there's already a great library of PSP games to play.
