Uncharted interview divulges game size, SPU usage

Also, "we've also put into the game a medal system, so as you're playing the game if you perform special feats you'll get medals, such as getting a certain number of headshots, getting a certain number of headshots in a row, killing people, doing a special brawl combo, just lots of things along the way that will unlock the medals. The medals then contribute to your overall medal score and your medal scores then feed into our bonus system which allows all of the unlockables to be unlocked." Sounds like there's plenty to do in the game other than just blaze through it! The medal system is also planned to turn into a trophy system once Home hits. Rumble is built right into the game, so for those of you who'll be importing Dual Shock 3's, you've got a surefire rumbling game on your hands.
The meat of the interview is why Uncharted could only be on the PS3. Wells explains a number of reasons. First, standard hard drive creates the seamless, load free world. Blu-ray helped squeeze the 24GB game on a single disc -- he says it wouldn't have been impossible on DVD, but the game would have been very, very different. Future games, Wells declares, will probably demand a dual-layered Blu-ray disc. The Cell processor served as a very handy tool for compiling all of Nathan's 3,500 animations as well, so you'll see the right reaction, or a random/new reaction, every time something happens. Wells admitted that "As far as the Cell processor and the SPU's are concerned we were only using about 1/3 to 1/2 of the SPU's at one time and so there is still quite a bit more we can do." We can't wait to see what the future holds, but for now, we can't wait to play Uncharted!

Anybody know of a good site, in English, to import a DS3?
pixlz @ Oct 30th 2007 11:14AM
www.play-asia.com
Justin @ Oct 30th 2007 11:15AM
cannot wait for the DEMO + Game.
And I also would like to import a DS3. What about Play-Asia?
Justin @ Oct 30th 2007 11:15AM
welp. that answers that @ 2.
Akamaru @ Oct 30th 2007 11:19AM
Wow this game looks better and better everytime. I can't wait to get my hands on this thing or at least try the demo. And if this is only using half of CELL's power, then I am very excited for the future. Also, those blu-rays are coming up more and more in developer interviews with relevant devs. I'm glad Sony chose to go with the next-gen technology instead of some yestergen crap-box.

This is one of those games that I literally can not wait till it comes out!! AAA all the way!
drdre74 @ Oct 30th 2007 12:04PM
10 to 12 hours of game play is great for me. With all the dying I'll be doing or trying to get head shots that will be around 15 hours for me.
Juney @ Oct 30th 2007 12:05PM
OMG i wish this game had online play.. Gears Of War style.... i wouldve bought it in an instant im the type who likes to play it through once and then get the online experience for 50 - 60 hours but i think i might skip this one... lets wait till the demo though...

I respect this guy now for his comments. It kinda bugs me when (as I own both systems) they make comments like "impossible to do on dvd!!", when it actually isn't. This guy said it wasn't impossible, just would have been different. He wasn't trying to start a flame war about blu-ray vs normal dvd.
Todd @ Oct 30th 2007 12:33PM
Ok so have any of you experienced problems with System Version 1.94? It's totally making my PS3 games unplayable (by distorting the graphics and making them look like they're puking all over each other), and it's making my PS3 freeze at random when I turn it on or quit a game, but hey, who's counting?
Solace @ Oct 30th 2007 12:42PM
can't wait.
awesome single player adventure > meh sp adv + tacked on multiplayer.
Deviation @ Oct 30th 2007 12:43PM
@8: No issues with 1.94 here. Perhaps something else is wrong? Might be time for a tech support call :(
Hyams @ Oct 30th 2007 12:54PM
It's amazing how this game has gone from being something I'm not interested in, to being the game I'm most looking forward to this year.
I cannae wait.
hovan316 @ Oct 30th 2007 12:59PM
I laugh at people who say DVD is here for good...
Blu-Ray is the next media and devs are gonna use the space they need.
This game looks amazing and PS3 owners should seriously consider it...especially cause it's built ground up to run on a PS3!
Sora57 @ Oct 30th 2007 1:49PM

No issues with 1.94
Byron517 @ Oct 30th 2007 2:04PM
It's just amazing to see how far games have come!! 24GB!! That's insane!! Could you honestly have imagined this back during the NES days? no way! I'm looking forward to see what else comes out for the PS3 but this is mos def a day one buy for me!
Noshino @ Oct 30th 2007 2:25PM
hey Nick, did you write this after or before the second part of the interview, because some of the stuff mentioned on the second part are quite interesting
Popfrogs @ Oct 30th 2007 2:57PM
@8: sounds like overheating to me, call Sony, they'll get you straightened out and it won't take 4-6 weeks.
And before you ask for Sony's number, look in your owner's manual. You did keep it, right?
For the record, many games of EoJ and R&C: Future since the 1.94 update, zero problems here with a launch PS3.
ndoerr @ Oct 30th 2007 3:46PM
@ Noshino -- After, honestly. For our posts, we're supposed to keep them to three paragraphs unless it's a feature, so I had to cut corners to get all of the first part summed up.
I wholeheartedly plan on going through the second half of the interview for more information scalping, but for the sake of space, it had to get overlooked for this post. Hope that's not too disheartening! =)
Dru @ Oct 30th 2007 7:23PM
@Todd
No problems here and I've gone through a game and a half of R&C, some EOJ and some NBA 2K8. Something chew your cables?!?
Consolcwby @ Oct 30th 2007 10:49PM
@Todd: Nope, 1.94 is stable with me too - played HS, football, and some Everyday Shooter without any problems. Before calling tech support, I'd check your connections to your TV/monitor first. Power tv & PS3 off then unplug the connections and then replug them. If that doesn't work, try a second HDMI cable (if you have one. Then I'd check the system settings for games and BD to make sure everything was ok. Then if all else fails, I'd call tech support. The number should also be buried somewhere on Sony's PS3 site. Sometimes tech problems come down to the simple stuff, like cabling and connections. Ruling those out will help you and the support staff better and get your problems sorted out quicker. Also making sure that it's only games and not movies (even DVD) could mean something. Take a pad and pen and write down everything you do (like a checklist) so when you DO call support, you will seem knowledgable enough to get them to help you quicker. I should know, I've done enough support jobs to last a lifetime! =D
@Everyone else: This game looks great, and ND will make it play great! My PS3-less friend is thinking of plunking down hard cash to get a 60GB JUST to play this game. =D It's a system seller to be sure!
Starfire @ Oct 31st 2007 7:13AM
This is good news for sure- developers are really making use of that Blu-Ray space and it's no wonder those DVD-limited 360's keep topping themselves when they realise this. They want to get reincarnated as a PS3!
