What will be in the next PS3 firmware update?

A new PS3 firmware is coming, and we want you to tell us what you think will be in it. We can't tell you when it's going to be available, or what's in it ... not yet, anyway. But believe us when we say that we'll have something to share with you very soon.
Until then, speculate! Once the full details of the next firmware update are revealed, we'll see how many of your predictions came true.

XMB in games...
HOME...hopefully
more online features
Toby @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:06PM
Id like the PS3 to spit out kittens every 15 minutes again.
Foom Man @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:10PM
I'd LOVE to see upscaling and In Game XMB (with BG Music included) but I doubt those will happen.
What is likely to happen?
>Background Music in PS2/PS1 titles
>Remote Play turns PS3 on (PS3 does not need to be in Remote Play mode)
>Expanded friends list amount/number
>Improved codecs (web browser may have improved flash player)
>Superior organization tools for each part of the XMB (sorting for Videos, playlist support, etc)
>Maybe, MAYBE, background music for PS3 titles via having an iPod or PSP hooked up via USB and letting the mp3 player simply stream audio out.
finelicker @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:09PM
Custom soundtracks would be nice, especially seeing as the xbox 1 could do it.
more codecs for video playback support.
better web browser, (ps3fanboy can't even be viewed on it anymore)
auto shutdown command after download list is finished.
finelicker @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:13PM
The ability to chat to freinds online, whilst doing something else, (like 360) I hate the fact that you can't do anything whilst the chat is running.
Justin @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:17PM
send/ recieve/ reply to messages in-game
music in-game
game invites
thats all i ask :(
c'mon sony... PLEASE?
Justin @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:18PM
there's word at www.ps3scene.com that says the firmware will be available within 2 weeks (they got it from threespeech i believe), and that details would be available tomorrow.
komrad @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:19PM
hmm lets see...
xmb access in-game
customizable icons
better connectivity with psn
and
a pong screen saver with the ps logo as the ball.
that would be neat.
qwerter @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:27PM
@ justin i no what yur talking about theres an article on psxextreme.com thats from the playstation blog thats sayin the 2.00 update will be available within 2 weeks but nothing is confirmed on it
Xoonaka @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:28PM
You can view PS3 Fanboy just by turning off Java script. Everything runs fine... I think it's just that toolbar they added on the top of their sites.
Vincent Bridgers @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:31PM
Fix stupid wireless connection problem.
Update blu-ray player to profile 1.1
Response to previous commenter: HOME isn't due out until next year...so I hope that isn't 2.0...cause then 2.0 wouldn't come out until next year.
I would love to see more codecs for video file playing, but I doubt it.
XMB in game of course
Make the Guitar Hero 3 controller work for GH2 and GH1 (only a dream).
Justin @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:32PM
@ 9 yea, i just went to psxextreme, and its the same thing. hopefully tomorrow the details WILL surface like they said they would.
Benjamizzle @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:50PM
I would like;
1) Custom soundtracks, you cant beat shooting the crap out of someone on say Resistance while listening to some pounding electronica blow your ear drums apart between the grenades and missles.
2) Better media server support, I dont want to have to go though f layers of menus to get to my music folder and play a track dammit!
3) Chat while doing something else.... I thought the Cell was a multitasking beast... come on Sony can we have chat and games please g'dammit.
4) Timer shutdown... every other bit of my AV setup has this and 1 hour to fall asleep watching 300 on bluray isnt much to ask is it??? I dont know about eveyone else but im not a fan of leaving my expensive electrical goods on all the time.
5) XMB in games would be nice but Im not overly bothered about this as I likee to kill rather than see my pretty video thumbnails play out amongst the carnage!
6) CUSTOM SOUND TRACKS.... IT CANT BE THAT HARD CAN IT!!!
That is all folks....
Ben
T-P-M @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:35PM
What I'd REALLY LOVE would be the ability to write your own PS3 software/games. Like XNA for the 360, but without the $99 a year subscription fee. Doubt it'll happen, but I can hope :D
Tinga winga @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:38PM
better web browser update for the psn store custom themes like the psp one tv features dualshock for the xmb lol thatd b good when it buzzes when you move lol
apease @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:42PM
Wish you could a little more specific on when you could release more details... anyway...
We know it'll have remote on/off via PSP remote play. That's 100% certain thanks to the PSP 3.72 leak.
About 99% certain that it'll have BD 1.1 due to various hints from Sony people.
95% that it'll have in-game XMB
Might have:
in-game video chat with PS Eye
custom soundtracks
Use Eye to navigate XMB.
New XMB background animations would be nice, as would icon themes
And I dare to dream they remove ps2 region coding (for ps3s that can actually play them).
Jm @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:44PM
@11 ...the HOME BETA
Hiroken @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:49PM
In game XMB. Everything else is icing.
apease @ Nov 2nd 2007 5:50PM
btw, the "tomorrow" ps3scene is referring to is today. Threespeech updated with an incredibly useless story that says even less than this one does. http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=689
Hopefully the gig is up on Saturday, I'd hate to see the fanboys try to survive the weekend without news... it's not pretty in the forums right now.
Wonderflex @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:05PM
Numbered but not in order:
1) Video desktop wallpaper
2) XMB in games.
3) Customized Soundtrack in games
4) Xvid, Divx, Ogg, codec support.
5) Streaming movie trailers
6) Home avatar creator
An explanation of #6. I wouldn't want Home to be released to the public before it was good enough for mainstream success, but to let those of use who weren't fortunate enough to get in on the good stuff get a taste we should get access to the avatar creator. It could be used as your profile icon, and imported straight into home when it's ready.
Ciaran @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:11PM
"But believe us when we say that we'll have something to share with you very soon."
Would a bribe change your mind? $0.25, $0.50, name your price! hehe.
Oh and I would love all of thee above but why hasn't no one mentioned a REAL profile. I would hardly call your "Online name", "About you" (with what, one line MAX) and "Lanuage" a profile. Get to it Sony!
cma @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:07PM
@toby - kittens suck
Mark Gubarenko @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:24PM
I Want support of DTS: HD MA
xodome @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:11PM
IN-GAME XMB
CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS
THATS IT
cma @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:21PM
can we send this list to sony? :P
Toby @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:15PM
id like the expanded profile also, complete with custom icons for your friends list. thatd be nice
Wonderflex @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:17PM
Okay, I agree with Ciaran. We need real profiles. That would be rather nice, and it could tie in with my Home avatar creator idea.
hks @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:28PM
you got to have ps3 upscaling, no doubts about it, 720p to 1080i, i need it bad :(, too bad it won't happen though
Peter @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:25PM
What I want:
DivX
Better web browser
In game XMB (messages only would be great)
The ability to background download firmware updates
Select theme colour
I WANT DIVX ABOVE ALL THE OTHERS!!!
Maestro @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:29PM
Be able to have HDMI audio and Optical audio on at the same time. Even my eMachines can do that.
Wonderflex @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:31PM
You have an HDMI and Optical out eMachine? What future are you from where eMachines don't suck?
White-Sharingan @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:38PM
I hope they add the ability of choosing your own pictures for your online avatar.
I also want to take pics on the PS Eye and place it on the avatar
I also want to see people's profile in all games with their avatar, name, profile, etc.....
Better connectivity with PSP.
Add a wider arange of bluetooth devices, like cell phones and such. Also add the ability to use mor ethan one bluetooth headset.
Add a different pic for each icon, ala Xbox 360
Add a messaging system like the 360 has
Pay $5 a month and get all demos, music videos, extra games on time like the 360 while still keeping.
OH I KNOW, NEW UPDATES CONCERNING THE PLAYSTATION CARD!!! Sony release the damn thing!!!
Xenokai @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:05PM
Can you give us a time window of when you can tell us the feature included? Maybe within a week we will know or longer?
AkAkmed @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:32PM
in-game XMB IS coming sooner or later. weather it's 2.0 or 10
ha, sucks if you don't know binary
Solace @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:57PM
I wish it wasn't so, but it's already been proven that it won't have In-Game XMB OR In-Game Music.
Sorry to burst your bubble, guys, but the sooner you let it go, the sooner you'll be able to move on.
T-P-M @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:04PM
@Solace
What proof would that be?
FM @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:11PM
In game XMB. Since you can keep track of your friends,etc..like Live.
Solace @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:14PM

Wanna bet some money on it that it's true? Anyone?
fiero911 @ Nov 2nd 2007 8:26PM
In-game XMB
In-game soundtrack
New and improved PS store
Support for more vid formats like WMA and MOV
A gamercard
Improved internet browser
a long list, but this is the kind of stuff that the ps3 needs. I woudnt be dssppointed if some of them dont make it in cos the list is long. But i really wanna know when its coming
FranMan @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:29PM
- In-game XMB
o Settings, Photo, Video, and (maybe) the Network category would show up as blanks (i.e. no icons/folders under it) while in game
o Music and Friends categories would work as normal
- PS3 Remote Plan enahnced
o PSPs would be able to turn on/off the PS3, as well as no longer requiring the PS3 be in Remote Play mode in order to connect to it
- More Theme customization
o Would gain similar icon customization features, like the PSP has now.
- More Music visualizers
- Blu-Ray profile 1.1
- Rumble Support
- Enhanced Web Browser (more reliable, better Flash support, faster)
- More video codecs (360 got DivX, PS3 could pull it off too)
- Time/Date in the upper right-hand corner
*this one's a longshot* a Tools category, where you can download and install random tools from the Playstation store (i.e. Calculator, Notepad, Calendar)
sean @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:39PM
people think whats comin up in about 20 days. PS3's 1 year aniversery thing. so wouldnt that be a good time to release it. i bet thats when it will be out.
Tongo @ Nov 2nd 2007 8:51PM
DivX Support
Ed @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:40PM
I think a cool feature would be that future updates would auto-download (asuming you have the free space) and when you come back to your ps3 the upgrade would be waiting for you.
andy @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:42PM
just a copy of xbox live but change the name to psn :)
Goombakid @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:50PM
How about something for Guitar Hero so I can use the PS3 controller with GH/GHII/GH Encore? THAT can't seriously be hard to do.
Darkdrium777 @ Nov 2nd 2007 7:48PM
I agree with the anniversary of the one year old PS3 theory. It's a good guess, hopefully 2.0 will be out by then (And that would explain all the 1.9X firmware things that lasted too long XD)
brent @ Nov 2nd 2007 8:13PM
PS1/PS2 Backwards compatibilty software for 40gb model
JerJerBinks @ Nov 2nd 2007 8:15PM
I am less concerned with 2.0 than I am how future updates shape the PS3 landscape. I am interested to see how the Netflix, IPTV, and DVR rumors take shape. I would love to consolidate my TV viewing, recording and movie rentals into one Box or service. Dont get me wrong either, I want to do all of the above and play the best games on the market ... thats the power of Sony's trojan horse.
Extinction @ Nov 2nd 2007 8:25PM
"What I'd REALLY LOVE would be the ability to write your own PS3 software/games. Like XNA for the 360, but without the $99 a year subscription fee. Doubt it'll happen, but I can hope"
Home allows this using java
The webbrowser allows this using java and macromedia/adobe flash
Linux allows this using native linux executable code
Stop wishing for what you already have.
lucio @ Nov 6th 2007 7:20AM
what about:
1) folder creation for grouping the files (audio, video, photos, even games)
2) more codecs support (especially Quicktime - for HD- DivX, APE)
3) Open Development Platform for Homebrew apps.
4) multiple WIFI configs. profiles
5) LINUX preinstalled with full access to hardware
6) SONY MediaServer free for PC/MAC/GNU/Linux with full codecs support.
7) Better browsing and search support of files.
8) Movie preview when downloading from PSN Store.
9) THEMES support
10) background music in games
