So glad you posted this, I picked up several. I'd been wanting the two FF movies, and saved major cash over the used prices on Amazon.

Since I travel so much for business, I actually like UMD movies. The main problem has always been cost, since folks just aren't going to pay more for a UMD that has fewer features than a DVD.

If the studios had realized the potential and priced UMD movies at $5 to start (or bundled them free with deluxe DVD releases) I think the format would have been very successful.

I agree with POCKETGODDESS. I'm usually watching UMD movies during lunch break or on long roadtrips. I can't click the link at the moment (on a private network that doesn't allow it... yet PSPfanboy is somehow okay); does this $5 UMD deal also apply in-store? I remember a big clearance deal like this before summer that I missed... hopefully here's a chance to cash in if I can't find what I want online.

UMD movies aren't bad, they're just not worth $12~$20. $5 is the perfect price for me. They also need a better selection of titles. If the Star Wars movies or Lord of the Ring movies were available on UMD, I would snag them in a heartbeat!

Except UMD isn't 'dead'. New titles, available at most chains, some studios making the effort to do the $10-15 price range... Plus video out.

As a proprietary format UMD may not be a panacea, but it's not dead.

I got kung fu hustle and a couple of movies the last time this sale happened. They are the only umd's I own. I will definitely take advantage of this sale.

I just ordered 5th Element and Holy Grail.

I was just amazed to see an offer by EB or Gamestop that isn't a complete rip-off. I usually don't buy anything from them (as I like to save a little more than $2 if I'm buying a used game; and layaway doesn't sound like any less of a scam when they call it preorder) at all but there doesn't seem to be any fine print here.
Or did I just sell my soul to the devil? That is who owns EB/GS right?

Then again, as a few others pointed out, UMDs should only cost around $5, especially if there're no special features.

Now the trick on my next vacation is to get my wife to stop playing Vice City Stories long enough for me to watch one of these.

Oddly enough, the Best Buy near me recently put up a UMD video section. I bought a RHCP concert one. I thought about the Bob Marley concert UMD but it was $20!

Hey, $5, about what they're actually worth to me. I like the UMD format for movies on the go, but I do not like the same-as-dvd price with less good stuff. To try and defend the UMD movie format is a useless battle considering they're not even stocked in most stores now. There is really no argument to be made.

They are still stocked at chain stores like Circuit City, Wal-Mart and Best Buy. I think the only chains in my area that dropped the new ones are GS/EB and Target (and even then, Target had a few last time I checked).

I'm not 'defending' UMD, but the format isn't dead. It's also worth at least ten bucks, IMO. You can barely download a lower quality DRM'ed iTunes flick for that, and you don't get a physical copy w/ case. For a medium that's near-DVD quality that can be viewed (on PSP-2000's) on a TV or on the go, I think films in the $10-12 range are reasonable. $20+ aren't.

UMD has its faults, surely, but there's no point to going all hater on it and saying it's 'dead', 'nobody carries it' or 'only worth it at five bucks'.

I just bought 2 movies I would have never bought - i.e. both Final Fantasy movies. At $5 each, UMD movies are a good deal. Anything more expensive, and I have absolutely no interest in UMD.

As someone already mentioned, if I want a locked, limited format, with average video quality, I can easily download from iTunes (and I hate iTunes!). The price of a UMD has to reach this $5 cost for me to be interested at all.
