Forty percent failure rate completely false
There are a lot of rumors that simply don't end up on PS3 Fanboy. Why? Because some lack any semblance of credibility whatsoever. One was a recent report that 40% of 40GB PS3 systems were failing ... days after the system's launch. The reports were limited to a number of unknown websites, and details were slim.
David Reeves from SCEE responded to these reports, telling Kotaku "We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PLAYSTATION 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story ... Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3."
"Sloppy journalism" and "totally unfounded rumors" do seem to go hand in hand, especially on the internet.

It's all those XBots trying to spread rumors about the Console that has good quality, so there 25-33% Reported Failure Rate will look better.
Toby @ Nov 8th 2007 1:06PM
even if that WAS true, the overall percentage would still be much lower than the 360s
Tony @ Nov 8th 2007 2:16PM
That's one way to try and stop the PS3 finally trouncing the opposition with a price cut and growing games catalogue.
Failed.
Solace @ Nov 8th 2007 1:24PM
maybe 40 "consoles", but certainly not 40"%".
oh, those silly 3fixme fanboys.
i know it's the internet, but why are people STILL believing everything they read?
jp @ Nov 8th 2007 4:43PM
@solace "3fixme" i like that, never heared that one before.
mccomber @ Nov 8th 2007 1:35PM
The fact that it was higher than the 360's reported rate was what made me question it, as that just seemed too... whatever. As much as I laugh at a lot of the conspiracy theories, I have to admit that stuff like that makes you wonder.
The fact that the site that originally reported it pulled the "news" so quickly speaks to how much faith they had in the article anyway. If it had been true they would have told Sony to get stuffed and left it up there.
HektikLyfe @ Nov 8th 2007 1:43PM
Not reporting on news that can't be sbstantiated is one thing. Completely ignoring the existence of one is another.
Rumors aren't anything new to this website, I guess on a website called PS3Fanboy selective reporting is to be expected.
I don't care more about any system over another but I do expect them all to be reported in a fair and unbiased manner. David Reeves from Sony isn't someone I would consider to be unbiased.
Lets wait and see what the numbers show. Microsoft has yet to admit to a large hardware failure rate even though we all know it to be true. (They call it a customer service dissatisfaction I believe.) I don't expect Sony to admit to anything either anytime soon.
Its the nature of the business. Denial, denial, denial. Until the next platform is released and they admit to their previous problems and they promise the new system resolves them all.
exolstice @ Nov 8th 2007 2:39PM
If it's on the internet it has to be true. Same goes for TV.

Kotaku is the most sloppy gaming site i've ever seen. They're PS3 haters. you only have to check the way they word their articles on the PS3. They're a bunch of idiots and shouldn't be taken serious by the hardcore gamer. Funny how they report anything negative about the PS3 before anyone else. They're a bunch of jokers. I stopped reading Kotaku recently because of their uneducated fanboyism, which was taken to the extreme in many articles.
PS3fanboy is where i reside.
linebeginstoblur @ Nov 8th 2007 2:30PM
@1
33% is an estimate by retailers. That doesn't even include systems shipped straight to Microsoft for repairs. Microsoft has not made any official statement about a failure rate percentage yet. For all we know, it could even be as high as 50% or more.
OnThinIce @ Nov 8th 2007 2:51PM
I didn't even hear this rumour, isn't the failure rate more like 0.5%
john @ Nov 8th 2007 3:52PM
This is a clear example of the press coverage PS3 is getting for the last year or so. I dare saying most journalist either have some personal problems that makes them create false accusations against Sony or are having some kind of close relation with Microsoft. Either way this is not journalism. This is trash. Websites such as joystiq with its garbage articles and mor-nic writers are perfect examples. This negative press reaction to everything-Sony has got to the new low.
Those verm-ns in joystiq should at least TRY to identify their sources. Not every f****n garbage worth coming in the website; although the content of this suits their website perfectly. Most Gaming websites are trash, they publish trash and those who write them are trash themselves. Why should there be only and only one website (this site) to publish positive news about playstation? Why are some bloggers so goddam persistent to combine their schizophrenic personalities with news and sell it is Hot rumors to the public? Why are they so keen on seeing Sony fall? Do they even have an ounce of dignity left?
Journalism my f-knig –ss. You are nothing but worthless trash. Waste of humanity, a f-king sc-m.
To those who started this rumor and those who published it, From the bottom of my heart, F-K YOU.
360 rocks @ Nov 8th 2007 4:24PM
Its true, I swear...The PS3 does have a 40% failure rate. It is da rubbish. And it has no games at all - all those rumours of games like Heavenly Sword and Ratchet are just lies spread by Sony and deluded fanboys like you. Its a crippled machine, just 512 MB of RAM - unlike the awesome 360, which has a phenomenal 512MB of RAM. 360 rocks.
JR @ Nov 8th 2007 5:19PM
@360 rocks
why do you have 68 comments on ps3 fanboy compared to 2 on 360fanboy? i hope that's sarcam, if so youre really bad at it.
skyed99 @ Nov 8th 2007 5:10PM
You know how quickly people forget. I agree that Microsoft has had plenty of problems with the 360 bricking, but at least they are attempting to fix the problem. Sony's stance is always that nothing is wrong with their products. Some examples, the PS1 had a tremendous failure rate, I know of at least 3 people who had to buy no less than 3 of them during the first two years that they were released. Sony refused to admit they had a problem, so you did have to buy new ones, at least Microsoft is fixing them for free. I personally bought a Sony camera that broke after about 20 uses, Sony tells me that it will cost $120 to fix..for a $230 camera. There again, there is nothing wrong with their product. My friend bought a 58" Sony LCD TV, it now has a big blue spot in the center of the screen. A Sony rep tells him that the problem is not common (check the internet and you will see how wrong that staement is). They also tell him that it will cost $1200 to fix his TV. I have also had a 5 disc player and a stereo cut out on me. So all of you fanboys who act like they are on Sony's payroll, just remember Sony is a large Japanese company, who could care less about you. So quit acting like they are family and get upset when someone talks bad about them. They won't be there to get you back when some trash talks you.
Kevin @ Nov 9th 2007 7:37PM
@xbox360rocks.
I am a proud PS3 owner, so no hate here.
But the PS3 has 256 MB of Dedicated RAM for the game, and 256 RAM for the console.
Unless I'm wrong.
@skyed99
And Microsoft isn't like the largest company anyone can think of?
The only reason Microsoft is fixing for free is because so many 360 owners get the RROD.
If they didn't fix for free, there is no way in this world that consumers would go with the 360.
My friend purchased the 360. I warned him it would probably break. He said "Ahhhhh Microsoft will fix it for free."
Sony being such a large company cannot waste it's resources on what maybe 50 consumers.
c0n0r @ Nov 8th 2007 7:37PM
Well I dunno about 40% but my 40GB UK PS3 stopped reading any discs 5 minutes into my first game of PES 2008. Got it swapped straight away and the new one has been fine but this IS happening, we just don't know how much.
Darkdrium777 @ Nov 8th 2007 8:36PM
JR: Or you fail at getting it... I find his post pure genius xD
on topic: well, rumours are rumours, and therefore I don't believe in them. :/
wired @ Nov 8th 2007 9:40PM
@13 that's funny because everyone i talk to says sony has some of the best customer service. they've even won awards this year for it.
GL @ Nov 9th 2007 2:18AM
YO!
Lorinis @ Nov 9th 2007 8:46AM
@13 Because your little group of friends makes up an accurate demographic of all PS1 owners. Go back to your pen in 360fanboy.
By the way, learn to make paragraphs.
silence @ Nov 9th 2007 1:01PM
Ya, just like the PS2 huh? Just a pack of lies! The PS2's never died...
Sony did an excellent job sweeping that one under the carpet.
skyed99 @ Nov 9th 2007 5:34PM
@ 17... I'm not saying that they don't have great customer service, I'm saying that they will not admit to a product defect. They will not fix anything unless you pay for it.
@19 I guess you're too brainwashed to understand the truth. If you don't believe me, go to various forums and ask the very unhappy owners of various Sony products how they feel about Sony.
I for one was a big Sony fan, and bought everything with a Sony label on it. From stereo equipment to my alarm clock. After you get burnt enough times you'll change your tune.
If anyone in this forum can honestly tell me that they bought an original launch PS1 and it is still working, I'll be suprised.
Why does anyone who says anything negative about Sony automatically a 360 fanboy? I've always been a Sega fan BTW, and every system I bought on lauch day from Sega still works today.
