Even though Howard Stringer may see the next-gen HD format war of senselessness
as a 'stalemate' right now, you've probably been wondering how things are going in pie chart form. Luckily, we've got just the pies and charts you've been seeking. From the chart,
additional data is extracted -- like SpiderMan 3 on Blu-ray continuing to outsell HD DVD's Transformers, and four dual format films making the top ten list thanks to Blu-ray, but their HD DVD counterparts didn't even sell enough to get on the top ten.
Even though it's still a completely niche market, these movie studios need to take heed and see that one format is continuing to outsell the other, despite high-profile title releases. It's just hurting the consumer in the end, unless they have both HD movie players.

All I have to say is:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You have NO IDEA how much marketing they put toward Transformers, how much they bragged about it, how restlessly they attacked Blue-ray in the last 2 month. But wow, amazing results! HD DVDs would have been history by now if more companies were backing blue-ray.
myselfandmii @ Nov 11th 2007 6:26PM
@1
and you know why they support them?
Paramount is almost official that got paid to support them...They just lose.

the companies just try to establish whos the boss on the next format but until that becomes a standard it will take a lot of time..

The problem with the dual players is that they're going to take a long time to drop in price
Popfrogs @ Nov 11th 2007 7:14PM
@6 & 7: LOL! The two might become one. You're a comedian right?
Blu-ray is the superior format and every PS3 out there is a potential movie player. The sheer number of PS3s vs. standalone HD-DVD players has already shifted things in Sony and their partners favor.
Consumers that are still on the fence will be greeted with less than half as many movies anywhere they go for HD-DVD. I myself have been to 3 big retailers in the last week (not including my local Blockbuster) and the shelf space difference is huge between the two.
Killswitch On @ Nov 11th 2007 7:15PM
Some of you care way too much about this format war. Wether you own a PS3 or 360, it is about games. It is a gaming console. That is it's primary purpose. Or suppose to be it's primary purpose for those who own a PS3.
Most people rent and buy dvds. Personally, I think buying any movie is stupid. Unless it is your all time favorite, how many times will you watch it? Why waste money on buying a movie? Just seems dumb to me unless you have a lot of money or dont care where your money goes.
But the format war, people blast Paramount for "pro longing" the war and get mad because they didnt go Bluray. What about Disney and whoever else who are strictly bluray? Why not blast them for being so hard headed not to go both sides?
And Nacho, i dont know where you got that link, but it sure as heck doesnt work.
As for me, like I said, ill keep renting DVDs until they are phased out. In the end, it could be either format as winner or something combined. For any consumer to care so much about which wins is just ridiculous. Both formats have their ups and downs. The best thing to do is to combine the best qualities of both sides and combine it. But of course, that makes too much sense and wont happen because BOTH sides are stubborn.
Killswitch On @ Nov 11th 2007 7:16PM
Oh and while we're at who is dominating who.......
WII AND THE XBOX 360 ARE STILL DOMINATING THE PS3!!!
How about that for a title?

. . . that's all have to say.
Random1448 @ Nov 11th 2007 7:21PM
@11 dominating? i think you need to take another look at sales growth charts, PS3 is surging up the charts.
Killswitch On @ Nov 11th 2007 7:27PM
@13, I think you need to take a look at how many people actually own 360s compared to the PS3 and what games people in the US are playing most. Theyre on the 360. Sure the sales of the PS3 are finally picking up after 2 price cuts, but the 360 sales arent just going to stop. They will still grow as well. I highly doubt that the PS3 will truly ever catch up and be even or over take the other systems.
Xiru @ Nov 11th 2007 7:39PM
"WII AND THE XBOX 360 ARE STILL DOMINATING THE PS3!!!"
True in America, false everywhere else. PS3 is Dominating the 360 everywhere except the US and Korea. But yeah, the Wii is dominating both of them. Strange times we live in.
Killswitch On @ Nov 11th 2007 7:48PM
@XIRU
You said it. I never wouldve thought the Wii wouldve done so well. I dont own one though I have tried it out. I cant believe so many people got into those things. The games, graphics, and capabilities are just not impressive. How that can stay up with the true next gen systems like the PS3/360 is beyond me. I would think the fascination would wear off by now.
Andy @ Nov 11th 2007 7:49PM
One thing I find funny is when Dreamworks advertised for Shrek 3 they did mention HD DVD at all. It might be different in the states but the ad I saw in Canada only mention DVD.

TKC-Muzzer @ Nov 11th 2007 9:17PM
The fact they cut out extra sound from the HD DVD version of Transformers because they had no space left means consumers are not getting the Full hd they pay for. It would of all fit on a Blu Ray disc. Studios want to provide as much as possible on the disc to attract consumers. I just purchased Cars on Blu Ray and thanks to the new Java features it's great but they do have to use a 50gig disc to get it all on. I think Disney could play a big part in HD competition.
OTAM @ Nov 11th 2007 10:43PM
Me and the average joe consumer are staying with normal DVD. Why?
1. It doesnt need a new television set to see the jump from the previous format.
2. The new television set cost $1000+ for a family size (32 inch and up).
3. Don't tell me to play games on a monitor. I don't play games on a monitor and I don't use my PC on a tv.
HD-DVD and Blu Ray doesnt interest me or the other blue collar people (and we're the ones who drive the majority of the sales)
Extinction @ Nov 11th 2007 9:34PM

Here's another to show you just how equal xbox and playstation are, in terms of sales with all the launch dates aligned.
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php
Storm don't you think it's sad that a console that xbots claim has no good games is still managing to stay in line with the xbox? Although the ps3 does have some good gams, it still lacks a AAA game. Once a AAA comes, get ready to sell your xbox (if it hasn't RRODed by then).
shekki @ Nov 11th 2007 10:48PM
@16, the fascination for the wii has slowly begun to wear. Everyone i know who owns one, has it collecting dust in their shelves.
I mean its a fun concept, but paying 250 for 2 gamecubes stuck together is beyond me. The machine can't even play DVDs. If the system came out 1 generation ago, it definetly would have given PS2 a run for its money.
But seriously, guitar hero 3 uses mono sound... what is this 1997? or even 92? The system will slowly die down as 3rd party developers drop support.
Edge @ Nov 11th 2007 11:07PM
Attention PS3Fanboy! You are not listening. Why do you think we care? Because Sony tells us that Blu-ray is somehow linked to games? Come on. I find it amazing how far you can string your fans along, but this tops it all.
We just don't care about Blu-ray vs. HD DVD except how it fuels our juvenile fanboy rants. Which don't matter.
And that goes for the commenters on this story who DO care. It doesn't matter unless you just happen to get to bust Microsoft's chops, right? Even then, you are punching the wrong bag. Toshiba has more to do with HD DVD than Microsoft. If Blu-ray were failing, who would Xbox fanboys go after, Samsung?
Edge @ Nov 12th 2007 12:14AM
@26.
Bull. F***ing. Sh*t.
Playstation 3 took an extra year to come out. They lost that year and they can't get it back. They have to live with it...as do you.
But that's fair cause Xbox 360's are failing left and right cause they didn't take the time to design the thing properly. They have to live with that...as does every xbot out there.
You can't drag the console launches next to each other, except to satisfy your dumb fanboy ego. Game publishers make decisions based on who has the features and the install base NOW. Not in the past. They aren't governed by the same insecure, juvenile logic as you are.
John @ Nov 11th 2007 11:33PM

Well uh first Joe Average will never see a site like PS3 fanboy and any Joe average would never post on a blog. Next you can get a pretty damn good 32" 720p LCD for $699. Check out Vizio and Olevia.

Damn, where did all the xbots come from?!? I could spend days on here enjoying the blog, reading about PS3 news without the flametards from the RRoD club.
Why don't you guys go back to your blogs and quit wasting our time with stupid comments like "HD-DVD FTW" and "PS3 has no games". Your arguments are all slowly, but surely becoming moot.
I really don't understand why xbots even care about the whole HD-DVD vs. BD debate anyhow. Your 360's don't play HD-DVDs unless you slap that $200 peripheral on there. You should just wait out it and then pick up a PS3 down the road. You'll be able to play some great, exclusive games like Heavenly Sword, RFOM, R&C, Uncharted, GT5, MGS4, FFXIII, Little Big Planet, Killzone, Lair (just to name a few) and then have a real HD player instead of slapping on an expensive as hell add-on.
Or, just go away and post on your own blog cause most of the stuff you guys spew is just plain silly!

@38 No, but Walmart has a huge market-share in any movie sales so their addition could make a huge difference in either direction. You can't just ignore one of the largest retailers on Earth just because it might show you that you are wrong.

Funny how these Neilsen reports do not include sales from Walmart who ran a sale during this week on the Toshiba HD A2 for $99 and HD DVDs for $15.

I love this site!! LoL I just come on here and watch as Xbots and PS3 owners clash like a scene on Braveheart LoL honestly you guys make my day at work! LoL
Ok my two cents!! To be completely honest I believe the sales of Blu-Ray will speak for itself. I compelely agree with you @ 35 (Iridium)!! I think this holiday is going to be a HUGE battle and with the HDTV being cheap and not to mention that because of economical recession which will push prices further down more and more people will own a HD set. It wont be in my opinion until after the holiday where we'll see the real seperation in sales.. If Blu-Ray can hold strong through the holidays I think it could be over soon... We'll have to see.. What worries me though is this still may be a very lack luster holiday in the states.. we'll see..
Byron517 @ Nov 12th 2007 10:04AM
I know my last statement will be over a few heads but apperently the economics are putting towards people being more careful as in what they will buy rather then buying for price sake, but apperently with the HDset being the hot topic of the holidays and the lowering of prices this is where we'll see our boom, I'll post a link soon but I'm at work!

This shows us a long trend and if it keeps up, things will not be good for HD-DVD. I find it funny that people are so argumentative over the 2 formats considering the article is stating facts. Ya Blu is winning dispite having more expensive hardware but you don't have to bash the HD-DVD supporter. Then you read HD-DVD supporters trying to put a spin in there favour which the stats a clearly not agreeing with. You people need to grow up. If you're choosing to support 1 of these formats at this stage, you're taking a chance of owning a dead format. Deal with it and remember your trash talk won't help either side. Blu is winning now and that's all there is to it. Will Blu win? Who knows; things can change in no time in this war and all the stupid people fighting on either side of the fence don't realize that this is just hurting everyone. We'd all be better off with a winner now so the poeple supporting the dead format can cut thier losses and comfortabe buy the format that won. I will support the side i choose in sales, not in a verbal bashing session, with hopes that i picked the right side, but if i decided incorrectly in the end, I'll be the 1st person to replace these movies with the winning format.

nope, nor did i ever claim they were hd-dvd exclusive...
but the fact remains that wal-mart is a huge point of sale for a large majority of customers, especially with consumers who are more..."conservative" with their spending...
and seeing as how HD-DVD seems to be catering more and more to the lower income brackets, logic would say that it is possible that HD-DVD sells better at wal-mart than at other stores(again, not making a declaration of fact, just a hypothesis)...
and frankly, even if wal-mart sold 100% blu-ray, and 0% hd-dvd, i would still call the neilsen ratings useless, again, because they ignore a large chunk of sales in the consumer industry....
so it's not a point of being fanboy or not, it's a fact of wanting some accurate data instead of data that is skewed towards one camp or another....
but if you calling me a fanboy helps you sleep better at night, then by all means, go right ahead, i won't stop you...god knows you playstation fans can use *some* solace, you think?
