No, dust doesn't void your warranty, but it might?

However, the CSR surprised him with this Valley-Girl-like response: "The only way that it, um, voided is if it was neglected, um, abused, dropped or anything like, modificated like if you opened it up, modification, if you didn't have your receipt, um, any power failures like mother nature or anything like that then that actually does void the warranty. Other than that any defective PS3s or anything like that is still, um, still under the warranty."
Further research on Ive's part indicated that a dusty PS3 will probably have the warranty voided, due to the aforementioned neglect category. So guys and gals, take care of your sexy black machine. Grab some cans of compressed air or whatever and keep the innards of your system as clean as possible. We'd hate any of you to get screwed out of a replacement system!
[Thanks, Fernando!]

this is ridiculous!
i would be so pissed if some one told me they cant replace my system because of dust...like i live in a dust free world.
Dru @ Nov 11th 2007 8:56PM
Um, Nick if you, um, had listened to the audio clip, um, that was, um, where that, um, information came from than, um, you'd know that, um, the CSR didn't, um, come off sounding anything, um, less than, um, normal.
No need to bash on dude cause they took what he said verbatim off the recording (hence the "ums"). What was more interesting to note was how Ive got the recording. He basically said to the CSR that I'm recording this for training purposes and the CSR just ignored him. It wasn't his idea originally, but it was ingenious.

@ Dru -- I did listen, but I don't care. It's far more entertaining to read the transcript like a valley girl. Any way you look at it, using "um" and "like" that many times isn't very professional, if nothing else.
ruibing @ Nov 11th 2007 9:08PM
If it was really only dust that was the problem, I really see no reason why you can't clean it yourself. If dust caused overheating and killed the system, I think that would be neglect. My point is there really should be no reason for the system to die from a normal amount of dust.
Burns11 @ Nov 11th 2007 9:46PM
I don't see how dust would be so prevalent that it ruins a system. I've seen computers on for a decade or more not fail because of dust. It would take an extremely dusty household to accumulate that much dust, I'm talking decades of dilapidation amounts of dust.
This is such a ridiculous non-issue.

@Nick
You're right. Once I actually read it out loud with the valley girl accent it was funny. Do you think many people will actually get the reference though? That is a pretty damn old "joke"/movie... Like, gag me with a spoon!
ndoerr @ Nov 11th 2007 11:25PM
@ Dru -- hah! Maybe you're right. I guess we're just getting older, huh? Even so, those were the teen movies that really... really... I don't even know. It's all a strange Molly Ringwald (right?) blur.

I totally get it, I thought it was hilarious, and yes, people talk like that all the time here in California.
I think of my bro-n-law's ps3, which sits on the floor and is on, all the time.
I honestly can't believe it hasn't broke down, I mean, I went to put a memory card in the slot and it was full of cat hair! And the two unused usb ports are covered in filth.
It's amazing that thing still runs. And the only discs they can play are blu-ray ps3 games because all their ps2 games have succumb to scratches. Drives me crazy, being over there and seeing the system abused, like that!
SuperGayParade @ Nov 11th 2007 11:45PM
@John, domestic abuse is far worse...

This is funny, no really.....you may not know me but I posted a comment stated how lately all the gaming websites only posted negative news and nothing positive about the ps3...about how for some odd reason the last 3 good news about sony and the ps3 wasn't posted anywhere else besides this website....well this little negative news, now get this, shows up everywhere, joystiq, kotaku, everywhere else
but the other day when I was looking for the positive news on those websites, none of it could be found, but they didn't waste anytime posting this time.....

While I hate to see people take this one incident as fuel against Sony (I mean come on this is one incident compared to how many problems with MS customer service and the 360?) I do think he probably has a point when he says that the PS3 is more apt to draw in more dust when you leave it on all the time with folding home running. Having an air filter in the room isn't always an option and also doesn't always work and some parts of the country are just more dusty then others, not to mention if you live in an older building they can have a lot of dust. Not everyone can just open their window for a "fresh breeze of cool air" especially if you live in a hot part of the country where there is no "cool air" during the summer. The other problem is you can't really get into a PS3 to clean any dust yourself because that would void your warranty as well. I suppose a vacuum could do it but having lived in many different parts of the country some dust is more sticky then others. Hopefully this will get resolved and no one else will run into this problem with getting their PS3 fixed.

Compressed air voids the warranty also. I'ma get one of those battery powered keyboard vac cleaners.
My house is very dusty so I'm worried. I opened up my old computer (5 years old without being opened) to find a thick layer of dust. I dust everyday and theres always a thin coat of dust (not enough to see, but you can feel it) My apartment building was built in 1938. I always have the windows open. My ps2 doesn't get dusty really, though the vents in the front get caked with dust every while. :( Ima get a new tv stand for my ps3, high up with a door and put a towel over it. Maybe I'm paranoid? haha.

bioshock!! god, make it real
LAWLS @ Nov 12th 2007 6:31AM
why wouldn't he just get a can of air and try and blow out most of the dust before sending it in? i mean dust only would lay on top the chips n stuff, so wouldn't it just look like it overheated itself without neglect?
Popfrogs @ Nov 12th 2007 12:49PM
@17: Doing computer repair, I've seen some smokers and cat owners with horrible PCs once you crack the case. 90% of the time these same people have their tower sitting on the floor where it becomes an expensive dirt trap since it's always sucking air.
There are varying flavors of dust and crud that ends up inside electronics that have fans for cooling. One machine I opened up had roaches in it with a piece of an apple inside. I know, wtf right?
Instances like these are why Sony can't categorically state "dust won't void your warranty" or that it will void your warranty, because you don't know what killed the PS3 until you crack the case open. A certain amount of dust is tolerable.

vacuum the damn console and keep a cloth on it when ur not using it. Even if he took SONY to court i think he would fall flat on his face, as dust being the issue here theres many was to fix that air filter in the room, air compresser and the first thing he should have done was vacuumed it b4 sending it off.
This part of the message goes to all you PS3 owners get a cloth cut in the diameters of your ps3 on do wht i said above and when u do notice dust gather clean it and when u do feel ur room beocoming stuffy open the window no matter how cold and the fresh breeze of cool air should cool the console down from over heating hardware failiers.+ if u think console issues are bad try going through the PC problems i get from time to time ......Peace out!!!!
