Korean IPTV demonstrated

Non-American PS3s are incredible. In Europe, you'll be able to get DVR on your system, so you can record TV shows. In Korea, you'll be able to watch TV through the new IPTV service available exclusively for that territory. Watch this video, taken from a Korean electronics show. With this, Korean PS3 fans will be able to really take advantage of the PS3's media abilities. Too bad an equivalent service won't happen in the States.

You would think that the big content providers in NA would be fighting for a top spot on the XMB to supply streamable content with advertisments.

Cable companies in the US are basically forcing customers to get DVRs now, anyways. It would be nice to just be able to use the ps3, but how would my cable provider charge me the ridiculous rental fee?

Did we not here awhile back that Tivo and Sony had a thing going? There is Tivo to go for PSP so perhaps that will be SONY's approach in the US...team with Tivo for DVR functions with brand name recognition?

I'm not sure the U.S. has the network infrastructure to make this work well, South Korea has plenty of bandwidth for everybody. Oh well, I guess we'll know if it makes sense for the U.S. when (if, really) Microsoft finally gets around to implementing it.
The funny thing is Divx support almost counts. Unlimited titles to choose from, but ya gotta download them first. ;)

With regards to the "TiVo to Go" reference above - have you tried it? It's garbage in terms of PSP support. Go to the TiVo website and read the instructions as to how they expect you to save the files, rename them manually, manually copy to the PSP, etc. It's a joke...

Not to hate on the 360 or anything, but it does kinda tick me off, but IPTV is available (soon I believe) in the US via AT&T (I think) on the Xbox 360. Now I spite the 360 not because of fanboyism, but because the PS3 has all these [or is capable of dvr/iptv] and most of which were announced "first" for use in other countries. Yet 360 owners seem to be ignorant about this, take pride in thinking their console had it first, and cheer gleefully as if MS made a miracle. How many times have MS followed Sony yet get praised for it? Bigger hd -> hdmi -> dvr -> iptv -> quieter system. Sure sure Sony is trying to imitate XBL w/ PSN but imo it sucks compared to Live! However, it's different and it's one thing!

Ah well I have Sky + so need for a DVR, although would be cool function on ps3.
I think it's funny that a lot more games, and software is being released in places which would normally get things last (like europe and other pal regions) and the americans are so angry because of it.
Just be patient a service like this will eventually become available in the states...when the ps4 is released

With the LocationFree base station, I can watch live TV, record, playback, schedule a recording, etc etc from my PSP or notebook. Its not a DVR or IPTV for the PS3, but it works for me right now. And if I had a DVR, I could control that from the PSP/notebook as well, anywhere in the world I have a WiFi signal. Video quality is dependent on the speed of the connection of course. Hard to tell the quality of this Korean IPTV, but it actually looks pretty good on the decent-sized screen they are doing the demo on. Sometimes I think I am the only one who uses the LocationFree stuff...

@7 - I really don't see how the US doesn't have the same broadband for this kind of service. On Demand videos have been around a while, and a small stream speed increase for most DSL users can accomodate HD video streams.
I'm just not sure I want to waste space on the relatively small PS3 hard drive for large HD recorded video files.
Also, if we wait on Microsoft to innovate this, we'll be waiting forever. Another key question is why would a monopolistic company like MS put their software for something like this on a directly competing product like the PS3??

IPTV i out in the US....if you have the new AT&T U-verse service in your area, then you can get IPTV. IPTV tho in the US is Microsoft backed(if i remember correctly)would be one reason i doubt we will see that service here. Bandwidth is becoming less an issue with many telecoms offering FTTP and FTTN services in most major cities and expanding rapidly.
