Sony cuts price of devkits by 50%

This can only be a good thing that will lead to more developers working on the PlayStation 3 platform. We look forward to seeing that happen.

Not only does it mean that more developers can hop on board, it also means that current developers can buy more programmers/testers can use them. It could theoretically improve development times and quality.

Why aren't they giving these away for free? $10k per devkit is a drop in the bucket when you only sell about 100 devkits every quarter
Andy @ Nov 19th 2007 5:26PM
This is excellent news. Cheaper dev kits means smaller game companies can make some games for Sony. Right now its only the heavy hitters that can afford to program for PS3.
Does a game company have to use these dev kits to make games for PS3? Or can they use there own engine? Are these even related?
bluesky_v2.01 @ Nov 19th 2007 5:27PM
I'm really far from game development business, but I never thought you had to pay for a Developers Kit.
Utsav @ Nov 19th 2007 5:47PM
Anyone know if there is a cheap
Utsav @ Nov 19th 2007 5:53PM
@5, somehow my last message didn't come through.
Is there a cheap (

That's so weird, my comment dies after I type cheap. I think it's a problem with parenthesis and a less than sign)
Let's try again:
Is there a cheap - less than 40 dollars, dev kit. It'd be awesome to be able to write stuff anyone can use without having to go through the hassle of installing linux.
Ruben @ Nov 19th 2007 6:21PM
Awesome, read this on the giz this morning and as I said then, This is great! Finally we can see a big movement from Sony, fixing issues, making a better ad campaign, releasing more games, getting more aggresive and now this!
James @ Nov 19th 2007 8:19PM
The devkit will be like a special type of PS3 with extra hardware for debugging and development. It doesn't have anything to do with the game engine. That's softare that would use the devkit to develop.
John @ Nov 19th 2007 9:19PM
This is awesome-- not only are they improved, but now they cost half the price. But there is a more diaphanous positive meaning, which will be understood by those affected, that Sony is still taking very positive, very concrete steps to ensure the console's longevity, but they're also saying that they support the content of those who couldn't afford to develop on the machine before this price drop.
John @ Nov 19th 2007 9:22PM
Okay, Utsav-- DUDE. If you consider installing Linux to be difficult, there is no way you are going to be able to use ANY kind of devkit.
The cheapest way is with Linux. Install it, install C++ and go to town.
