PS3 firmware 2.01 is now available via Network Update. This minor update will fix a few glitches noted in the big 2.00 release. Hopefully, those that have reported game freezing, and other performance issues, will be able to sigh a breath of relief.
Update: Here's the "official" word on what's new:
- Improved stability when playing some PS3 format software
- Improved stability of some system applications, including the Internet Browser and Information Board
- Improved stability of the upscaler for PlayStation format software when played on PS3 models that are backwards compatible
- The new Remote Start feature has been changed to avoid an unintentional power-on. Remote Start was introduced in firmware version 2.00 to enhance the Remote Play feature by enabling users to turn on a PS3 system remotely with their PSP system from an Internet hotspot.

I didn't have any problems in the first place. Too bad there's no in-game messaging :(

Fohacidal @ Nov 20th 2007 1:09AM
Thats the second FW update this month and Im still not seeing the most requested feature by all PS3 owners, in game XMB. Is it that hard to apply part of a core for such a simple task which WAS possible even before the release of the PS3...?
stevie @ Jul 25th 2008 9:46PM

Daniel @ Nov 20th 2007 2:10AM
I'm not having any problems at all...hmm.
And about in game XMB...maybe it's a game to game thing. Smackdown Vs Raw 08 allows you to view your frineds list and access all features of the friends list from in game. Of course only when you go to online and are in a room but it still allows it.
stevie @ Jul 25th 2008 9:49PM

The latest System Software Update is now ready for download for the PLAYSTATION 3. Here are the details of what this firmware accomplishes:
• Stability during playing some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.
• Stability of System Software including Internet Browser and Information Board has been improved.
• Stability of the upscaler for PlayStation 2 format software has been improved. (Playability of PlayStation 2 depends on model)
• [Remote Start] feature is changed to avoid unintended power on.
As always, we’re continually evaluating and improving your PLAYSTATION 3 experience. We will continue to share similar updates like this on the blog, so keep an eye out. Thanks for your ongoing feedback!
turd_facist @ Nov 20th 2007 2:14AM
Stevie, it's a bummer your parents weren't pro-abortionists. That said, I do have to say I've noticed some weird problems going on. I can't seem to expand certain parts of the xmb and tversity seems to broken. Anyone else?
kalsey @ Nov 20th 2007 2:22AM
Sounds a lot like the errors people got on a past firmware update. Here's what sorted my problem out after I updated and I couldn't access the PSN Store or use the Internet Browser.
- Clear the browser Cache: Simple. Start Internet Browser, go to the little options bit and clear the cache, totally rinse the thing. Should help immediately.
Sketch @ Nov 20th 2007 2:27AM
@17
LMAO!!!
I haven't tried TVersity since 2.0 so I can't confirm that I'm having the same problem. I'll have to look into that tomorrow...
krill @ Nov 20th 2007 2:38AM
tried that caché trick and didn't work either... i need 2.02 badly!
kentuckyfried @ Nov 20th 2007 3:05AM
Where can I find the wallpaper in this posting? I kind of like it.
krill @ Nov 20th 2007 2:46AM
psn is dead for me..60 gig here
Lithium @ Nov 20th 2007 3:01AM

lol, it's not as simple a devoting a bit of one core's processing power. It's really a matter of memory. To be able to always have to XMB available or be able to msg people in game you need to always have that app running in memory. Doing that leaves less for developers to use for their game. The PS3 OS is already bloated vs the 360s and they have been working on freeing up memory for these exact reasons. That article was on PS3fanboy too.
Umut @ Nov 20th 2007 3:55AM
I was hoping that with 2.01, I can browse to playstation.joystiq.com with my ps3 and succeed viewing the content.

CCFC_Nick @ Nov 20th 2007 6:29AM

It's already under themes if you have 2.0 or later
Starfire @ Nov 20th 2007 6:36AM
Kind of ironic- the one and only site that the browser has trouble viewing is this one! But there is a fix- turning off Java and not activating the plugin, when asked to.
As far as this update goes, good to see they are still improving the upscaling of PS2 games. I know it's not a feature on all PS3's, but it could certainly give that library a new lease of life in the world of HD.
Chris @ Nov 20th 2007 7:06AM
What the hell? From reading these posts, I'm terrified to update my PS3!!!
TVersity broke last time too so maybe Sony is trying to deny it's function, since they originally turned down the same formats TVersity supports for piracy reasons.
But seriously! "Won't turn on?!" "No PSN?!" ... No thank you!
RightWingLiberal @ Nov 25th 2007 9:40AM
Hmmmmm... is that why my PS3 has been freezing!!
Its frozen like 9/10 times since I got the update and before that it only froze once, but I never really thought about it cos i only play online so I just restart and enter another game..
Cool, so after this update it will stop freeezing??
Anyone else ever have this problem in England?
babyface @ Nov 20th 2007 7:38AM
Stevie, if you're even remotely interested in people being able to understand what you're whining about, use some punctuation and structuring in our posts (if you know what I'm talking about).
I for one didn't have any issues with 2.0 at all so far. And blaming the firmware for the difficulty of finding bolts in Ratchet and Clank is absolutely ridiculous.
What's next... FW 2.0 is to blame for the Darfur crisis?
Kspraydad @ Nov 20th 2007 7:44AM
If you are old enough to post in a blog you should be old enough to get yourself a spell check plug in too (or use Firefox).
I didn't have ANY problems with 2.0 but I will wait 1 week before going to 2.01 ... need my luck to hold out.
BTW...for Canadians, The Orange Box and CoD are on sale at Dell.ca today for $45 (random off topic but important info)
JerJerBinks @ Nov 20th 2007 9:56AM
I had problems applying the update, completely froze up on reboot. I manually powered the unit down and then back on and it continued with the update. Hopefully I wont get game freezes in Assassin's Creed now, it was getting kind of annoying.
Seminole @ Nov 20th 2007 10:15AM
After reading Stevie's posts I've got one thing to say.
If people like him are the future of mankind, then we are f***ed.
Stevie, my advice to you is to take an Adderall, download a spell checker, and stop sniffing paint thinner.
Kinsey @ Nov 20th 2007 10:38AM
I had no problems with 2.00. Right after I downloaded it. Assassins Creed started to freeze on me. So frustrating. I even had to turn tyhe switch off in the back to turn the bloody thing off.
vegi-saurus @ Nov 20th 2007 10:32AM
I was owning on Warhawk last night and my game froze. What stability FW 2.01?
Sora57 @ Nov 20th 2007 10:36AM
No way am I updating the FW with this release yet.
Popfrogs @ Nov 20th 2007 11:17AM
Uh, you guys KNOW this firmware update is ONLY for the US PS3's right? If you're in Europe and you update to this, there's a chance you'll brick it.
Broken Haiku @ Nov 20th 2007 11:28AM
#17: I think they were, it's just not 100% complete yet.
Evil Forum Troll @ Nov 20th 2007 11:36AM
Hey Stevie!
You ever hear of punctuations?
ahmad @ Nov 20th 2007 11:46AM
i am interesting for update2.01
Sean @ Nov 20th 2007 12:09PM
Here's what I've noticed since updating to 2.01:
1. Warhawk freezes constantly.
2. When connecting a bluetooth headset, the controller is dropped repeatedly and the devices signals are interfering.
3. The ps3 unit was running extremely hot.
4. I'm pretty pissed about the preceding 3.
Everything was working FINE before the update. WTF happened? Does anyone know if you can roll back a firmware update?
disguy @ Nov 20th 2007 12:34PM
I think I'll hold up on updating.
Aren't we supposed to get a PSN update today? I guess I'll have to update if we get something good.
James @ Nov 20th 2007 1:12PM
@41 You're right! Where's the Thursday update (Tuesday edition)?
EDGE @ Nov 20th 2007 1:46PM
Man, I really wanted this to curb the freezing of Assassins Creed, but I still want to play CoD4, arg!!
Wonderflex @ Nov 20th 2007 3:11PM
When the update first posted last night it froze my COD4 match. After the update everything is working fine. No problems at all. I'm running this on a lauch window 60GB.
I sometimes wonder if Microsoft pays people to come into these forums and post false problems to make the system look like it has issues.
teamracer @ Nov 20th 2007 4:50PM
Warhawk crashed after update to 2.01 ! ?
regards
Stephen @ Nov 20th 2007 11:35PM
My 60 gig is doing just fine, too. I haven't had any problems that haven't been seen on other models (like Assassins Creed freezing and making me want to stab people/things).
