PS3 outsells Wii again in Japan
Last week, the PlayStation 3 turned heads throughout the industry when it outsold the Wii in Japan, pushing 65,000 units. It appears the the tidal wave that is the newly introduced 40GB PS3 doesn't appear to be slowing down much as it outsold Nintendo's console for the second week in a row.
While the total number dipped to 53,000 systems, it still outsold its foe by almost 20,000 units as the Wii only managed 36,000 sales.
After going through such a rough inaugural year with the PS3, it's interesting to see the turnaround Sony's managed with its console. Battling through bad press, over-priced systems and a lack of compelling games, it appears the PlayStation 3 has finally turned the corner and is now everything we expected it to be. Now, can it go for the trifecta?

WTF iz dat about @ Nov 22nd 2007 11:15PM
WOW if this last into next year then the PS3 will pwn japan again and then theres America and Europe >_>
Xiru @ Nov 22nd 2007 11:18PM
Please do it for one more week! I want Novemeber to be the month of the PS3 in Japan. I hope that the number stabalizes around 33k units per week in Japan. Would be great news for us, because it means more Japanese exclusives and Capcom can kick themself for moving MH3 to the Wii. :)
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Nov 22nd 2007 11:30PM
Good! Hope more success comes to sony!
Van Faulk @ Nov 22nd 2007 11:54PM
Great, now keep doing it for a year and you might just catch up...in Japan.
In other news the wii outsold the ps3 in america by how much again?
Aaron Zanotto @ Nov 23rd 2007 12:53AM
Awesome, building momentum. Now keep this up for about a two years and they'll be even in Japan.
Who Flang Poo @ Nov 23rd 2007 12:55AM
I dont get what the big deal is it was only for a few weeks, not to long ago 360 out sold PS3 in Japan for a week.
Justin @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:00AM
That's a good point Van Faulk. But Japan is the mother land and is where the Japanese devs care about most. And I don't know about you, but I sure do love my Japanese games (Capcom, Konami and Square games, anyone?).
Kxpuc @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:28AM
MC is only sayign it outsold it by 3k instead of 20k like CVG
hiiro @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:54AM
"...over-priced systems and a lack of compelling games, it appears the PlayStation 3 has finally turned the corner and is now everything we expected it to be."
So now it's ok to say that, after a year of getting bashed by fanboys for doing so. Seems that all those heated debates were empty arguments from the Sony fans.

"In other news the wii outsold the ps3 in america by how much again?"
awwwwww.... someones cranky because his fad has run dry.
Almadi @ Nov 23rd 2007 4:58AM
And this has nothing to do with Wii shortages?
Bored @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:13AM
No shortages in Japan. The japanese seem to even be fed up with Mario himself. (SMG selling less than SMS).
Such a happy time for gaming :)
mattclarkie @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:13AM
Overpriced. I call the Wii over-priced. Any console that sells for profit in it's first year is over-priced.
I will give it to you that the games have been on the weakside. But so have the Wii games.
It looks like the Wii has reached saturation point. Hopefully the PS3 can catch up.
Myke @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:42AM
This is good news!
I just got home from standing in line for 3 hours in the cold for a new tv and a lot of people were buying the 40GB PS3s. I'm glad that Sony is picking up sales right in time for the holiday. Sony FTW!
Oh yeah, I'm a proud owner of a BRAND NEW BRAVIA LCD!!!!
Jay @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:55AM
Almadi,
Wii shortages, eh? Yeah right. Nintendo have just admitted they are making 1.8m a month. No figures, anywhere, in any country, suggest they are selling at that rate!!
You can't therefore claim that the Wii is not selling anywhere near 1.8m a month because of shortages, when 1.8m a month are hitting stores!!!
PS In the UK just ring up Nintendo direct. They have "plenty in stock for Xmas" - my mate just got one, easy.
billster @ Nov 23rd 2007 8:18AM
If VGchartz is to be believed the ps3 nearly outsold the 360 last week....
XDragon @ Nov 23rd 2007 9:00AM
PS3 is making a comeback and if it continues, we'll likely see more exclusives returning as well as developers trying to push their games for the ps3 instead of making a sub 360 par port.
Draco @ Nov 23rd 2007 10:03AM
I don't know if this will work out but here are the sales, including the drop, and the percentage of total sales for that product.

Actually, after the numbers were readjusted, the PS3 DID outsell the 360, by about 5,000 units
Kenology @ Nov 23rd 2007 10:41AM
I think many of you are really setting yourselves up for a potential disappointment. You have to wait and see how this plays out longterm. Two weeks of the PS3 outselling the Wii in Japan is hardly *turning the corner*. At this rate, it would take two and a half years for the PS3 to catch up to the Wii's installed base. Plus, Wii fit is right around the corner. Thirdly, Nintendo has yet the slash the Wii's price, launch with a new color(s), or do a bundle - all of which would launch it's numbers back over the PS3 for sure if it ever becomes a real threat. I'm just looking at this objectively. I want Sony to do well and we can definitely get excited over the past two weeks of sales data but let's keep everything in its proper perspective.
Aaron @ Nov 23rd 2007 11:24AM
Awesome news! :)

Three more weeks!
Three more weeks!
PapaDennis @ Nov 23rd 2007 4:31PM
1. Can't buy more Wii's than are available for sale now can we?
2. Everyone want's a cheap BlueRay player for xmas. With the ability to play a marked-down/discounted PS3 videogame now and then.
Andy @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:07PM
Excellent.
As someone who likes white people games I'd take sales in America/Europe over Asia any day. But this is still good news as the Wii has been outselling the PS3 4-1.
Note: I'm not being racist I just don't like JRPG's, Capcom or KOEI. Or in other words 90% of Japanese games.
Kenology @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:20PM
@ #17 Andy - "As someone who likes white people games..."
Huh!? Can you define "white people games"?
Andy @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:47PM
Games like Resistance, GTA:IV and Warhawk instead of DMC4, FF13 and Bladestorm.
BlackBeltJones @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:31PM
I think every japanese person owns a wii by now.
Jay @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:52PM
"I think every japanese person owns a wii by now."
Absolutely. In an alternate universe in which Japan has a population 1/37th of its real size.
James @ Nov 24th 2007 1:07PM
Let's see......
Population of Japan = 130 m
Wiis sold in Japan = 3.5 m
Claim: Everyone's got one in Japan which is why sales are down.
Answer: Rubbish.
No of Wiis manufactured every month (global) = 1.8 m(1)
No of Wiis currently sold every month (global) = 850 k (2)
Claim: Nintendo can't make enough to keep up.
Answer: Rubbish.
(1) According to Nintendo
(2) Extrapolated from official sales figures for US/Japan over lastthree months (both markets historicaly 75% of global Wii sales)
Brad @ Nov 25th 2007 12:01PM
This is great news for the PS3, but I don't expect it to last long. It WILL happen again, however, next year as key games are released, like FF XIII. However, keep in mind that when FF:CC comes out on the Wii, it's going to get big jumps in sales in Japan, too.
To those pointing out the huge Wii production figures - yes, it is still almost impossible to find Wii's in stock in the US. Yes, you can find them, eventually, but you have to be at the store the day the shipment arrives, etc. I managed to find one, but it took me a few weeks, and I know other people who cannot buy them.
PS3's Blu-Ray capability is great. One thing I hate about the Wii (which I bought for my kids - play the 60GB PS3 by myself!) that really annoys me is that it won't even play DVD movies. That's lame - it would be nice to have for the kid's TV that the Wii will be connected to. And, that capability can't even be added! I mean, come on, even the PS2 could play DVD movies...
