PSP-2000 sells 1 million units in Japan
After only two months on the market, the PSP-2000 has sold a million units in Japan as of Nov. 22, Sony announced. What makes it more impressive is it reached the milestone two weeks faster than the original PSP when it launched in December 2004.
"Along with the ever greater sales of the PSP system, more and more software titles are released, with more than 500 software titles available in Japan alone," Sony said in its release. "Looking forward, many more titles in various genres are scheduled to be released this holiday season from third party game developers and publishers, as well as SCE Worldwide Studios Japan Studio titles. The new slim and light PSP offers more convenience in portability and more choice in colors to match users' lifestyle."
Hitting this number so quickly isn't entirely surprising considering that the PSP-2000 sold 500,000 in just two weeks after its launch and has been in the top hardware spot in the weekly hardware sales charts several times, as well. It will be interesting, however, to see how long it takes Sony's newest version of the PSP to hit that mark in the other two regions.

" with more than 500 software titles available "
But the DS fanboys say it has no games. 0 =/= 500. Surely they wouldn't lie.
Oh wait...
Brello @ Nov 26th 2007 8:20PM
you forgot two little words there. "...in Japan"
Going strictly by GameRanking score, people can say the PSP lacks great titles. Whether or not this is true, I do not know. I'm currently playing Dungeon Siege which sits at 74.6% and I think it's grand. I do think the PSP needs MORE games though. A complete lack of new games this week and last week, which included the "black friday" Christmas rush was a little upsetting. The next game I'm interested in for PSP doesn't come out for months. It just doesn't seem right. It surely doesn't get the attention it deserves.
pixelator @ Nov 26th 2007 11:44AM
I hope it keeps up, and that the software attach rate continues to improve and what really needs work, now.
The system has sold well enough to prove that, while perhaps not wresting total control of the handheld market from Nintendo, Sony has carved out a pretty large market for the PSP.
Sony desperately needs Crisis Core to release in the USA to stimulate game sales, here -- and more titles like it, Silent Hill and GoW. The upcoming titles list doesn't look like much right now, hopefully that will change. ...What worries me is when companies like Lucasarts snub the PSP by releasing Lego Star Wars for every OTHER active platform on the market including the PS2 and DS.
I've said it before - beancounters run the game industry. If you aren't seeing even a basic port of a game that's already been ON the PSP in a previous version, that's a strong vote of no-confidence, Senator Amidala.
Alien @ Nov 26th 2007 1:42PM
Chains of Olympus , MHF2G , Crisis Core , Dissidia , Kingdom Hearts BBS and GT4 mobile seems as a pretty strong lineup for me pixelator ;)
Anyways , good going for the Slim & Lite ... yet a nother milestone achieved by Sony :)
navstar @ Nov 26th 2007 1:22PM
Where are these numbers coming from? Sony has never reported "Sold" numbers, have they? I thought they always mentioned the misleading "shipped" numbers.
Kspraydad @ Nov 26th 2007 2:48PM
Here is the official Press Release:
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/071126e.html
It is 'sell-in' units which means units sold to retailers (shippped) and not 'sell-through' which is sales to consumers.
billzilla @ Nov 26th 2007 1:14PM
I dunno, I think the upcoming game list still looks a little thin. Nothing else of note coming before Christmas, anyway.
Speaking of which, what happened to the PSP version of Atari's new Godzilla: Unleashed? I now see PS2, Wii and DS versions being touted - but no PSP. If they quietly dropped that, I'm emailing Atari myself - and woe betide those f'ers!
Don @ Nov 26th 2007 8:25PM
Yes, the PSP version of Godzilla: Unleashed seems to have been shelved/cancelled.
I tipped PSPfanboy to check into it, but they couldn't be bothered.
Really pisses me off that it's cancelled, seems like it could've been a great game for PSP.

Anyone else bothered by the PSP's horrible screen? The ghosting is terrible on it. In fact it's the worst screen on any device I have seen. Cell phones, iPods, and even the DS have no ghosting issues whatsoever. I cannot believe this is not a big issue for people. How can PSP users not notice the absolutely laughable response time on the screen? Play Loco Roco is you don't see what I am talking about. Please fix the damn screen Sony so I can go get a PSP.
Kspraydad @ Nov 26th 2007 3:04PM
Nope, I don't notice it at all. The PSP is a great machine...too bad you're missing it.
maskedrose @ Nov 26th 2007 5:29PM
are you on crack? I play Loco Roco on a regular basis. The psp screen is fine.
Brello @ Nov 26th 2007 8:07PM
Are you playing your PSP in the refrigerator or something? Yes, there's some ghosting on the PSP slim, but it's nothing crippling. Slightly worse than that of my DS Lite, at the very most. Making fun of the PSP's screen is ridiculous. The thing is huge, gorgeous, and is one of its primary attractions.
pixelator @ Nov 27th 2007 6:03PM
The PSP screen does ghost for certain games and videos. It'd be nice if it had a faster response time but all things considered, it's a minor flaw.
Gh3tt0 Child @ Nov 26th 2007 2:39PM
Is it worth selling your old psp for?
Tahiri @ Nov 26th 2007 2:50PM
"Anyone else bothered by the PSP's horrible screen?"
No. It has just as much ghosting as my GBA SP and DS lite.
I NEVER notice it in game.
I'm more bothered by the people who actually complain about it. Especially when they claim DS doesn't have it
PSP_Amigo @ Nov 26th 2007 7:02PM
yah rriiiggghhttt the PSP has a bad screen, there is NO OTHER HANDHELD that has a better screen. You should prolly stop doing drugs while playing the PSP. Me thinks you are more liken to be yet another in a very long and lame line of DS Trolls.
I am looking for mostly to GOW, the demo was AWSOME!
It's a shame that they could not release it before xmas that would have certainly sold many a system!
Budman @ Nov 26th 2007 3:19PM
This really has nothing to do with the above article, but I just found out I could watch youtube videos on my psp via remote play and the ps3. Access remote play, then using the ps3's web browser from your psp, you can watch youtube videos. Sorry if everyone else possibly knows about this already and I'm just the last to find out, but I just thought it was pretty neat being able to watch Zatch Bell via youtube via the ps3's web browser via my psp. . . . . or however that can be worded. Go PSP! Go Zatch Bell!!
Dehshizknight @ Nov 26th 2007 4:31PM
Yeah, it works but not many people actually know about this.
Lol, I remember when someone on the forums pointed this out and I felt kinda stupid for not know about how obvious this was. Great feature, though.
Budman @ Nov 26th 2007 3:22PM
One last thing about the youtube videos, be sure and have that javascript thingy turned on in your PS3 or else the videos won't be displayed at all and you'll be stuck with no Zatch Bell!
legendarybod @ Nov 27th 2007 12:26AM
NO shock here.. I mean this is the psp they are talking about
PostedOval @ Nov 26th 2007 5:56PM
I picked up the new PSP Slim and gave my old one to a good friend for Christmas. He was DYING to play some of those great PSP games like Ratchet/Clank, Syphon Filter, Burnout, etc... but just doesn't have the cash. I was shocked how much lighter the new one is! However, the TV out is disappointing. I was hoping it would fill my entire HDTV screen. Oh well... Maybe Sony will update that with a firmware.
merc25 @ Nov 26th 2007 5:55PM
Uhh... new comment system. It needs a better background color than white, perhaps post-it note yellow or light blue (the grey background can stay).
The Godizilla game is still coming to the PSP, just not in America. It is set for a November 30th launch in Europe.

Pilch @ Nov 28th 2007 7:22AM
Oh no! Godzilla seems to have been dropped after all...
The link to Amazon.co.uk is broken and the Release Dates on Eurogamer shows Godzilla for Wii, DS and PS2 for Q1 but not PSP.

The comment about the screen reminds me of the time some dude said he won't buy a PSP until they get rid of the UMD - a proprietary format which means "he can't play his games (and movies) on other devices".
Kind of ruined his point when he added he'd bought a DS instead....priceless.
Brello @ Nov 26th 2007 8:09PM
It's a good thing dungeon siege is keeping my PSP busy. There isn't a whole lot of anything coming out for a few months. Nothing I'm interested in, anyway.
Kspraydad @ Nov 26th 2007 9:38PM
I finally got around to picking up KZ Liberation tonight...its awesome.
Well worth the 20-25$ you'll pay to pick it up.
Autobon @ Nov 26th 2007 10:00PM
Good to see the PSP doing well. Though i hate the fact Sony treats Japan so much better than us, i still think that the PSP beats the DS. I mean its not even a competition. The PSP has movies, games, internet, songs, you name it, all complete with a nice screen and PS2 comparable graphics.
The DS has....... a touch screen? Wow ya, i guss i want a DS now. I always loved those game boy color style graphics! HAHAHAHA man, sometimes i dont even know why ANYONE would want a DS. If someone has bought a DS over a PSP, please tell me what your on.
Brello @ Nov 27th 2007 1:51AM
I have both!
Battery life, power LED location and UMD drive noise are the only three things that irk me about the PSP. If I bring the PSP into a quiet place, it will disrupt and annoy people.
Comparing the DS and the PSP is rather pointless though, they're two completely different machines that have very different appeals. They're both great in their own aspects. I wouldn't want to part with either one.
Sora57 @ Nov 26th 2007 11:21PM
pspfanboy, change the background on the comments. I feel like I'm on the apple website.
FOXHOUND @ Nov 27th 2007 7:24AM
Sales would jump pretty damn high here in North America if they could encourage Squ'enix to release CRISIS CORE and DISSIDIA here already. :p They already missed getting it out in time for the Holidays... at least they can try for the PSP's anniversary.

Going by metacritic, DS's game library is significantly worse than PSPs. And only has 5 more titles.

Nobody said anything about comparing it to the DS's lineup. Both handhelds only have a small amount of stellar 90%+ games on them despite being out on the market for quite a long time now. I'm not terribly impressed by this generation's portable games yet. The DS is 3, and the PSP is turning 3 in a matter of months, and the software available is just not that impressive for being 3 years old in my opinion. That's just my own opinion, remember.
Autobon @ Nov 27th 2007 2:26PM
brello,
The PSP is noisy? What are talking about!? You can hear it at all! There is no noise coming from a PSP, you need to see a doctor about your hearing. Sheesh.........
Brello @ Nov 27th 2007 4:32PM
Uh, you can't hear your UMD drive? Why even say something like that? If you use custom firmware and flash all your UMDs on to the memory stick, then yes, it's silent. Otherwise, no, it makes a little a noise.

I do think UMD is the major flaw in the PSP system, but Sony's history of developing special disk media (minidisc, blu-ray) predisposed it to that solution. Flash and HD are superior simply because of the load times, which is the DS's one advantage: cartridges over discs.
The DS Lite is fun in specific ways. The stylus is useful for games like Hotel Dusk (tooling around the hotel by tracing a line on a map) and Trauma Center (the stylus's use as a scalpel is amazingly appropriate, since a stylus is an anal reincarnation of an analog stick) -- but in a PS-style game like Dementium, it's counter-intuitive. I agree with the guy a page back who said he didn't want to dink with a stylus while riding a bus. What annoys me about Nintendo apart from the *utterly wholesome content* is their gimmicky approach to controllers. Ever since the Gamecube, they've come up with ideas that sound better than they feel. Lots of people seem to love playing RE4 on the Wii, but a friend of mine hates using the "Wiimote" to shoot zombies. He says it feels wrong to switch from being a race car driver (the PS2 controller) to some guy holding a TV remote with a Tourettic magic wand trapped inside.
Extinction @ Nov 29th 2007 6:40PM
"Flash and HD are superior simply because of the load times"
Optical (UMD) is superior simply because it offers exponentially more capacity for exponentially cheaper publishing costs.
PSP level of quality games can't be done on flash with the developers expecting to make a profit.
And installing games to memory stick, and swapping them out via a PC when you want to play other games is not a portable friendly option.
Des @ Nov 30th 2007 9:19AM
I own both, my DS only has 3 games (Advance wars 1,2 and Dual) and my wife use it to play her Super Mario Bro, thats is all the use for my DS(and I have a pink one). My psp, use it for RSS, email check, media access and own 6 games. PSP see more use in my house, cos its a little bit more "useful" imo. But handheld games kinda throw me off, since I own almost all consoles (still don't plan to own Wii, I am not Mario/Zelda fan), there are just too many port for handheld which I rather play on my tv.
