PS3 Black Friday sales increase 245% compared to last year

If you needed even more staggering numbers, Sony also announced that since Nov. 2, sales have increased by almost 300 percent at the top 10 retailers in North America.
In layman's terms, this all means Sony has made a helluva lotta money. It seems Sony's concoction of a new marketing campaign; newer, cheaper hardware and some great exclusive titles have been a recipe for success, and we don't see why it will slow down anytime soon.

How have they "made money" when they lose money on each console sold. -_-;
Anyway, good job Sony Marketing :D

Do you know that for sure? There were a lot of cost cutting measures built into the newly released 40GB system. It's possible that it's profitable now.
Popfrogs @ Nov 27th 2007 4:24PM
Uhh, it's called attach rate. For each console sold you expect X number of games to be sold along with it, and since Sony has a strong stable of first-party games, they stand to make that loss back. It may take time (more market penetration) but it'll happen sooner or later.
organic_shadow @ Nov 27th 2007 1:08PM
YAY! We get our very own Sony-themed 'it prints money' images soon? Can't wait!!
comtar @ Nov 27th 2007 2:40PM
Concidering that Sony looses about $250 a system, it can't exactly print money, if anything, every system sold means it's actually eating money. The reason why the prints money images are funny to Nintendo is because Nintendo is turning huge profits the last few years, that's why their stock was gone up 10 times in America and is now the second most valuable stock in Japan under Toyota.
Remember that Sony has lost $800 million dollars just in 2007 alone from the PS3 in their games division. It was a huge news article in case you missed it. Microsoft finally turned profits because of Halo, Nintendo is the most profitable, but Sony games division has lost nearly a billion dollars.
Until Sony has a game that sells as much as Halo does, or the PS3 or PSP make a profit (which the PSP might actually be doing selling a million units in 2 weeks). There won't be it prints money images for the PS3 anytime soon.
I'd like to hear if the PSP is actually become profitable, if it is, then we can make it prints money images for the PSP. But the PS3 probably won't be profitable for a few years, or until HD-DVD gives up and BluRay becomes the standard.
Dehshizknight @ Nov 27th 2007 7:04PM
I agree with you on this one. The writers on this blog are awesome. Jem Alexander is my favorite simply because he always has something...."interesting" to say on the PlayStation Fancast.
Solace @ Nov 27th 2007 1:09PM
anyone else notice how certain other sites either never mention the good PS3 news or spin it to be negative?
hooray for PS3fanboy - one of the last bastions of support.
B1gC72 @ Nov 27th 2007 2:07PM
yea i noticed this. i could probably put money on it that this will not make Joystiq but they made sure to post the news about the PS3 version of The Orange Box being unplayable.
the bias is ridiculous there and Microsoft can do no wrong. even though i see them as being way more ruthless and cutthroat than Sony has ever been. i could go on for days about this but ill keep it brief for a change lol.
either way, great news for Sony, lets hope the keep this up.
XDragon @ Nov 27th 2007 1:13PM
Congrats Sony. The future keeps looking better for the PS3 and Blu-Ray every week.
vanhelsingh @ Nov 27th 2007 1:15PM
yeah but how many consoles? i don't care much for %
Jon @ Dec 4th 2007 7:08PM
I am curious also about the numbers. The percentage although high may be misleading. Last year black friday was November 24th a week or so after the playstation 3 was released and supposedly in short supply.
Frank @ Nov 27th 2007 1:17PM
Actually I think I've seen this on Kotaku and Joystiq already, Solace. And to be honest, I think this site posts too MANY articles sometimes. It seems like they post every single thing they can be find that can be construed as "good" news. Some random, unknown developer claiming how great ps3 is, automatically gets posted on here. I'm all for hearing good ps3 news, but we don't need to hear about how great the ps3 is for the 1000th time from someone owned by Sony as well. Maybe I'm wrong, it just comes off as propaganda sometimes when they keep re-posting Guerrilla Games and Naughty Dog touting how blu-ray is so necessary etc etc. It's fine once, but I've seen too many articles where they just keep repeating the same thing over and over again: Propaganda.
plyx @ Nov 27th 2007 1:54PM
Well, this site is called "PS3Fanboy".
Nate @ Nov 27th 2007 2:35PM
... it IS PS3 fanboy. If the word fanboy is in the title of the website, do you really expect them to be trashing the ps3? do you really expect them to ignore good news? Thats one of the reasons I come here, to hear the good side of the stories.
Greg Lewis @ Nov 27th 2007 1:18PM
As a non-xbox fanboy I can safely say I'll be more impressed when I see the actual figures...
Asher @ Nov 27th 2007 1:21PM
Is this really that impressive? Last year at this time the PS3 was supply constrained. This is just garbage PR and poor journalism for giving it credence.
Why do you think they left out the actual numbers?
Chris @ Nov 27th 2007 6:20PM
They probably left out the real numbers because the percentages sound more impressive. Sony doesn't disclose actual numbers very often, so we just have to take what we can get.
leiwei @ Nov 27th 2007 1:39PM
I camped at Fry's for the Black Friday and all I can say is there were more 360 Halo editions on the floor than there were PS3s. Most people that picked up a PS3 also picked up their blu-rays for the Fry's deal. This isn't to say that 360s weren't sold. Some moms picked up a 360 AND a PS3 for their lucky kid. But overall from the Fry's experience, the Black Friday did help PS3 sales.
JaseH @ Nov 27th 2007 1:39PM
I hope Sony's made a hell of a lotta money, cos they're sure gonna need it.
Anyway, nice picture. The 100 dollar bill sure suits the consoles image.

Some numbers might actually make this media release worth anything, since there were almost zero consoles on sale last Black Friday. Durrr.
Chris Rah Osiris @ Nov 27th 2007 1:43PM
More good news. Always makes the day better
Christian @ Nov 27th 2007 1:49PM
Great news indeed, but I doubt Sony made a helluva lot of money from this considering they lose money on each console sold. The make helluva lot of money part comes when people go back to buy more games, blu-ray movies and peripherals for their PS3 :)
Sony's great advantage is that the PS3 helps all their other business units, as it helps sell more HD movies from Sony Pictures, more games from the in-house game companies, more Surround systems and TV's from the consumer electronics division and maybe even some more music from Sony Music.
TheRockBoS @ Nov 27th 2007 2:02PM
If this percent increase is to be believed:
Black Friday NPD numbers (06): 197,000 PS3s sold
Estimated Black Friday NPD numbers (07): Roughly 680,000 PS3s sold
Brian Spence @ Nov 27th 2007 2:34PM
Great sleuthing.
Nacho @ Nov 27th 2007 2:04PM
Let think about this (for those that want console number) - easy 5th grade math. At lauch which was about Nov 17 there was 400K console. And from wat everyone saw there was a mad rush to get one (either the have or resale - but we wont get into that). At 200% that would double the number of console sold or bought (that begin 800K). At 250% it would be 1 mil. Thus 245% would be (for ev1 who wants an exact number) ~980K. I would say that is impressive. Something I believe ev1 one been waiting for to hear. Is this junk journalism - (that is to ones opinion), but as for me who is a supporter. I would like to hear something nice for a change then all of the negative news that been received in the past year.
*The numbers above are just an estimate and not exact.
Byron517 @ Nov 27th 2007 2:10PM
estimate or not that's still very impressive!! I'm sure we'll hear the numbers once the holiday season is over but otherwise this is good news for Sony
Nacho @ Nov 27th 2007 2:10PM
TheRockBoS - is properly right on the numbers. I used the number on lauch day / not black friday - my Bad ev1

I was at work trying to type as fast as I could, so the boss wouldn't catch me - I should of proof read my blog.
Akamaru @ Nov 27th 2007 3:16PM
they sold OVER NINE THOUSAAAAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Myke @ Nov 27th 2007 4:05PM

What are you smoking? Although Halo was very successful for M$, they are NOT still not making $ due to their "billion dollar investment" (remember RROD). Also, Nintendo was making profit since laucnh, they really didn't change anything to manufacture the Wii. Its called "recycling"!
Anyways, I'm glad that Sony has sold of consoles. Now, that the install base is increasing dramaticly (due to the 40GB), companies/haters wont have any more excuses for not wanting to make an exclusive to the PS3. Its NOW cheaper ($399), and the install base is increasing a lot Worldwide! With the momentum carrying in the holidays, the PS3 should be THE console through 2008 and w/ its game line-up next year, the only thing that could stop Sony is themselves.
mafafu @ Nov 27th 2007 6:09PM
I was one of those PS3 buyers on Black Friday. I now happily have all 3 new systems.
Hector Martinez @ Nov 27th 2007 10:12PM
And just how do these numbers compare to the increase in 360 sales during the same pre-holiday period? Sony is just doing damage control before PS3 sinks further into oblivion. I have faith in the system, but they haven't sold me on it just yet.
Urza @ Nov 29th 2007 2:08PM
"this all means Sony has made a helluva lotta money"
How can Sony make money when EVERY console is sold at a 30% or greater loss? They depend on accessories and first party titles to make up the costs.
The new PS3 is cheaper yes, but I'd be shocked if it didn't have a higher loss margin per unit then the older units.
