Take a look at the PSP's battery bulge
Sony's official extended life battery cover for PSP-2000 owners doesn't come out for another few weeks. However, 1_blue_pixel from the PlayStation forums has purchased a third-party cover from DealExtreme. He offers some truly insightful pictures of the system with its battery bulge. (For those that aren't in the know: longer life PSP batteries are larger than the current batteries in the PSP-2000, and will protrude out of the system slightly.) From the looks of the picture, it doesn't seem like the bulge will be too noticeable. In fact, we think it's worth it just for the 11 hour battery life (pictured after the cut).
One word: Wow.

Thats not as bad as i thought it would be. Neat.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Nov 28th 2007 6:44PM
yeah same here. I thought it would look really awkward, but it's definitely worth it for 11 hours of system time!
Espiox @ Nov 28th 2007 7:14PM
Not to sound like a troll, but 11 hours still isn't great.
psp&dsFanboy @ Nov 28th 2007 7:27PM
that's using the phat battery. The new extended life battery will give you even more hours.
pixelator @ Nov 29th 2007 1:16PM
Citing 11 hour runtime as 'not that great' is blatant trolling - what else would your intention have been? Why apologize?
My DS Lite on 3/4 brightness barely manages 11 hours and the PSP is doing a hell of a lot more in the hardware department (spinning UMD, higher power graphics/audio hardware, bigger display, etc.).
So tell us, how is 11 hours NOT great with a multimedia/gaming handheld..? My Archos PVP system didn't last even half that long. My 80GB iPOD doesn't last anywhere near that long playing video/games.
I mean, the PSP isn't perfection -- to be sure, but why do people attack aspects of the system that really are well above par? It makes no sense.
Don @ Nov 28th 2007 7:25PM
hey! That's my pic! And my review!
You're welcome, PSP Fanboy.
The bulge is not as noticible as I thought it would be. It does stick out though. What surprised me was how much MORE the old battery weighs. With it in the PSP Slim, it definately adds a bit of heft to the system.
If only this cover came in white, it'd be near perfect. From the pictures of Sony's official covers, it looks pretty much identical.
Brello @ Nov 28th 2007 8:19PM
Well, thanks for the pics, then! Seeing up close shots of the white PSP almost makes me wish I hadn't gotten the silver one. Almost. Whether or not I'll grab this new battery/cover, eh, undecided. It's $45 for something I've been fine without.
Peveus @ Nov 28th 2007 7:26PM
11 hours is great and all, but thats the system sat on the XMB not running a game. Hardly an accurate indication of battery life :P
Don @ Nov 28th 2007 7:35PM
Good point, Preveus. That is true.
I've only had 1 day of testing, but yesterday I watched 2 hours of video (Battlestar Galactica: Razor, not skipping the ads), played Ace Combat X for 2 hours, looked at some photos while listening to music for about 30-40 minutes, then played another 2 hours of Ace Combat X. So I'd estimate about 5-6 hours of gaming/video with the 1800 mAh PSP-1001 battery, compared to the 3-4 hours of gaming/video I get from my Slim battery.
p-diddy @ Nov 28th 2007 7:53PM
Any word if we can buy just the covers? I bought an extended battery a while ago intending to pandora-ize the one that came with my phat (though I never got around to it). I'd prefer not to pay $45 for a whole other battery when I just want the covers.

kinda reminds you of the upgraded AE86 with carbon fiber hood, doesn't it?

LOL
Sony sanctioned mods
NyghtcrawleR @ Nov 29th 2007 2:12AM
So maybe it isnt a true 11 hours, its still a heck of a lot longer and the bulge really istnt bad at all.
My question is how does the bulge feel when youre holding the psp and playing a game compared to normal?
Don @ Nov 29th 2007 4:06AM
It feels a lot like the old PSP (at least the right side does) except instead of the texture feel of that backing, this is very smooth. It's hard to tell how smooth it is from the pics, but it is much smoother than even the surface of my PSP Slim! It might be because my PS Slim is almost 2 months old, and I've only had the cover for a day. But it feels really good; oldskool PSP with bulge.
The lopsided feel may bother some people, though.
Frastoglegnia @ Nov 29th 2007 3:17AM
Here's a burning question for you: what about the huge dearth of cases for the PSP-2000, and what about compatibility issues with the few that exist?
The PSP-2000 hard case I found on Amazon is so snug the zipper threatens to rub against the side of the PSP. The possibility of packing in a thicker battery cover seems extremely unlikely.
The only real options for cases at the moment are found at Deal Extreme and eBay. If Logitech and other serious hard case manufacturers ever update their products for the PSP-2000, will the larger cover render the cases incompatible?
Noshino @ Nov 29th 2007 8:39AM
well, if they update their cases, I doubt they wouldn't take this matter into consideration since they know that there is a hell lot of people who will go for this...
Agus @ Nov 29th 2007 9:10AM
11 hours? could have been better than that!

Got mine last week from DealExtreme. I own an original PSP 1001 so I have both the 1800 and 2200 batteries. Putting in the 2200 battery does add some weight, but nothing bad. I played for over 6 hours and still didn't come close to running the battery out. Now I have the 2200 as my primary battery with the original 1800 as my backup. IMO, the benefits definitely outweigh the asthetic downsides.
Andy @ Dec 2nd 2007 11:21PM
did they improve the screen quality on the PSP Slim too? the screen looks really nice in the picture.
Don @ Dec 3rd 2007 4:50AM
Those are my pics in the review, so I'll give my thoughts: my PSP Slim's screen is noticibly brighter than my old PSP (fat) that is 1.5 years old. But, I've heard that LCD screens lose brightness over time, so it may be that's the reason for the extra brightness right now.
