Firmware 3.73 now available via Network Update [Update]

- Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
Update: Al De Leon from SCEA added: "With this update, operation of the UMD™ (Universal Media Disc) drive has been improved to address cases in which the UMD drive occasionally suspends and fails to reload data. Updating the system software to version 3.73 will resolve this issue."

This firmware was examined by DAX and Math and found to be a worthless update. See below.

Quoting Mathieulh:
"After much investigations from Alex and I, we concluded that the 3.73 firmware is fully identical to the 3.72 firmware, the only thing that changed were the module versions and the index.dat/version.txt that display the firmware version. ALL the kernel and vsh modules are the same, so are the rco files.
As you know this does not really make sense and we have yet to find out why sony issued a new firmware revision when nothing was changed. Perhaps there may be some flaw in the updater itself that may explain this move, I don't think we will ever know for sure.
Also this the part when some "coder" gets greeted by noobs because of being so "fast" to port "his" custom firmware to 3.73 while nothing at all changed from its previous 3.72 version. I will let you all figure out who that might be...
UPDATE: lflash_fatfmt seem to have changed a bit (over 20 different bytes) but that's all we could find, no critical change and certainly does not need ANY patches to be modified/updated in any way to run a custom firmware, perhaps the bugfix is there (we are not sure of that yet, we are curently taking a closer look at the module to be sure)"

We need some info :)
GumbyX84 @ Nov 29th 2007 4:09PM
It has been disproved. There is no difference between 3.73 and 3.72. People have already taken it apart and found that all the files are the same except for the file that contains the version number,
Dark_Alex finds official PSP v3.73 firmware is identical to v3.72
After investigation, Dark_Alex and Math have found out that version 3.73 PSP firmware is exactly the same as the v3.72 firmware, the only thing that has been changed were the module versions and the index.dat/version.txt that displays the firmware version. This makes little sense and nobody knows why Sony released a new version in which absolutely nothing was changed, perhaps they've given up? Read more here (Post #19).

Lulz, I beat you to it. =D
merc25 @ Nov 29th 2007 4:21PM
probably only meant for Japan, but it will probably be a boon for us CFW users, for it may mean some PS games will run (better).
Tim Parsons @ Nov 29th 2007 4:46PM
I think i'll keep my trust in SONY before i trust to the word of some Piracy/Hacker group,.
GoBob @ Nov 29th 2007 5:12PM
"PSP firmware 3.73 is now available via Network Update. Strangely, this update does not list any improvements before installation begins."
Well, technically Sony said there were no changes either.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Nov 29th 2007 7:09PM
They do not support piracy and all of the things they do are to prove a point. The end user is responsible for anything illegal.
Tim Parsons @ Nov 29th 2007 5:22PM
a Firmware update with absolutly no changes? waste server space and effort for sometihng that just has a different version number?,. yeha right,. like that's likey to happen?
GoBob @ Nov 29th 2007 5:29PM
Why do you think people are confused? Either Sony made a mistake, or they're up to something.
Da @ Nov 29th 2007 6:30PM
@ Tim Parsons
don't be a narrow minded jerk. Dark Alex isn't a pirate, he is a hacker (but not a cracker, which is what I guess you think a hacker is).
Custom firmwares allow the user to play homebrew, something that shouldnt be locked in the first place.
Tim Parsons @ Nov 29th 2007 6:48PM
It's SONY's product it's there choice what can and cannot be played on it,. make that choice b4 your purchase instead of resorting to these kinds of activities,. everyone knows Firmware users use it for Pirated Games,. the extras are just put in as an excuss/civer-up to that fact
p-diddy @ Nov 30th 2007 4:20PM
>> everyone knows Firmware users use it for Pirated Games.
Tim, I'm an intellectual property attorney. I own no pirated music, no pirated movies, and no pirated games. I use custom firmware on my PSP-fat (3.52-OE) to rip and play my PS1 games on my PSP - all of which I bought at retail prices. I bought the PSP-fat after buying my PSP slim for the sole purpose of medium shifting my PS1 games - a practice that is done all the time when I convert music on a store-bought CD to mp3s or AACs for my iPod.
While I am not so foolish as to assume that everyone that uses custom firmware uses it for legitimate purposes, I take exception to the statement that firmware use it for pirated games.

I suppose it's just to keep up in numbering with the Japanese firmware update, which does have stuff to work with.
Dr Curiosity @ Nov 29th 2007 6:55PM
I just reckon this is to stop people upgrading their custom firmware the current. Although I'm a newb to the whole "custom firmware" situation this is the only reason I can see.
GoBob @ Nov 29th 2007 7:03PM
Maybe, but DAX won't make a CFW unless it's it's an update worth making a CFW of. There will be no CFW of 3.73. Someone made a CFW of 3.72, but it was a rip-off of DAX's 3.71 CFW, so it shouldn't be taken seriously.
pspdemoboy52 @ Nov 29th 2007 8:33PM
My guess would be that they were making a new update and they accidentally published the blank one without editing it first. But what do I know? Nothing.

IT says now that it fixes a problem with the UMD drive, well according to IGN.
Kspraydad @ Nov 29th 2007 10:52PM
Yep...
SCEA has released its PlayStation Portable (PSP) system version 3.73. The update addresses an issue where the UMD might fail to load data.
(Course homebrewers don't give a crap about UMD right.)
Random1448 @ Nov 29th 2007 9:14PM
UPDATE:
It is different PSP OFW 3.73 adds kitten dispensing capabilities.

Fixes UMD crashes? I was hoping this would stop Wipeout Pure from crashing when you suspend the game in the middle of a race. Hopes were not returned with glee. It still crashes everytime you turn off your PSP in the middle of a race.
Barndo111 @ Nov 29th 2007 10:55PM
Soooo....just to fuel an unnecessary fire....
What would everyone like to see when Sony drops the eventual 4.00 update? I'm assuming it to be around March. I, for one, would like to see the Playstation Store integrated into the PSP itself without the need for the PC as a middle man. Maybe a less visually accented system that would load quicker on the PSP since the current site loads slow enough on my computer.
Also, as another aside, I thought I heard somewhere (maybe here) that Beats was coming to the U.S. store. Is there any truth behind that? I'm excited to start getting the store updates just like PS3 Fanboy does.
thaylinsgate @ Nov 29th 2007 11:44PM
Hey! I was able to do the upgrade without having the power supply connected! Has anyone else tried this!
Tim Parsons @ Nov 30th 2007 12:39AM
OH SNAP!!!! Looks like it ISN'T THE SAME,.
Obviously Dark_Alex knows F$%K All!!
Guess who SONY just Owned

Oh Tim. Your trolling never ceases to amuse me.
JPN @ Nov 30th 2007 9:52AM
I do have to say I've been having a lot of UMD freezing and crashing lately. Hope this fixes it.
GoBob @ Nov 30th 2007 10:38AM
Really? I've never had that problem. All my UMDs seem to be working perfectly, despite the fact that I suspend my PSP while in the middle of games constantly.
ponsccap @ Dec 16th 2007 8:28PM
now the sad part is....... i upgraded my psp from firmware version 1.50 to 3.73. the worst part is my games were totally unreadable. now i am really disappointed to this version 3.73. doesn't make any sense to my psp games.
