Rein applauds PSN's open-platform policy

In a massive interview with Gamasutra, Mark Rein sat down to discuss pretty much everything that makes him, him and Epic Games, Epic Games. For the sake of space and your sanity, we'll close the gap on the wide array of questions and focus on Mark Rein's stance on the PSN. It's a good one. The PSN is open-platform, meaning it will allow us to utilize user-generated content.
Rein's thoughts? "It's fantastic! I can't understand why people are so nervous about what Sony... no, Sony's wonderful. When they embrace user-created content, that's what it means to be an open system. That's why we're on PlayStation 3 first -- because they are embracing user-created content." We sure are with Unreal Tournament 3 hitting this December. It'll be very easy to load up the mods from the PC and transfer them onto the PS3 and if it's any indication how future titles will utilize the open platform, then we're in for a treat.

I've been a fan of the Unreal series for a while, and as a ps3 owner, this certainly makes me happy. It's great to have quality devs like Epic supporting and saying good things about the ps3 hardware.

Having never played an Unreal Tournament title, I never gave this game too much thought. After hearing about the mods and the (maybe) PC to PS3 cross-compatibility, I got interested in this game. I guess I'm definitely getting this one since Haze and Killzone 2 aren't coming out this year and Unreal Tournament is.

I still haven't heard about if there are servers or games just for PS3 players with the sticks.
Any news about this?
Popfrogs @ Nov 30th 2007 10:39AM
Yeah, they've already said server operators can choose an option for kb/mouse players or sixaxis players only.

Is it me, or does this guy HYPE the console that they have a product on????? He was on on the 360 tip with GOW.

It's great to see Mark Rein pointing out what is not that obvious-- and the makers of Unreal are worth paying attention to, if past titles are any indication. This guy grabs the "reins" in both hands and rides hard. Well... okay, UT is not out, yet. But I'm expecting something better than EA, let's just say that.

If Epic is on board with PSN, then the future is bright. This game should be a monster.

I'm really excited about this, but I'm taking it with a dose of salt. The initial PC reviews have been kind of "blah", and console shooters don't tend to hold a candle to PC shooters. Hopefully this will really break the trend.

As a designer I respect Rein's comments way more than Newell's. From most devs I have talked to they feel that Sony has the right idea with the open platform for the PSN and some even think it may give them the edge over the 360 as the war goes on.
Popfrogs @ Nov 30th 2007 10:40AM
The only good opinion you'll get from Gabe Newell is where the best buffet is.

If the keyboard and mouse support is good, then it will be a great game. Then i could play on my pc and ps3.

epic, if you love the ps3 so much, stfu and give us gears of war 2!
AL7AIR @ Dec 1st 2007 4:49PM
That's not happening in a million years because Microsoft owns the Gears of War IP.

I have fallen for the wii for the time being but there are so much to choose from and so little time...and it keeps getting better. Dru...What's wrong with them spymac people? Yeah some are misleading with their links but we're not all that way. So plop here are mine. Normally I only put one but since I see some have not represented our artistic community I am led to share more. It's the limit.
