Wondering what to do with Remote Play?

We know there's stuff on our PS3's compatible with remote play. But sometimes Sony sneaks an update behind our backs that sort of takes us by surprise, adding functionality with a game or option that we didn't catch. So, someone, user StalkingSilence, at the PlayStation Forums decided to keep a comprehensive list of all things possible with remote play so we never have to worry again.

That's not entirely true. While it's a comprehensive list, a lot of it is speculation and often times drawn from our very own PSP Fanboy site. Still, we're a good crowd, so we could probably help out the list by confirming or denying some of the less concrete listings. We are glad to see someone is keeping up with remote play functionality though, as a lot of people probably have been curious about what they can do to show it off.

How do I turn the PS3 on through remote play? i cant figure it out.

First, if you have multiple users on your PS3, you have to make sure that your user is set to automatic login.

Next, go to the Remote Play settings in the Settings menu of the XMB and turn on remote start.

Then, on your PSP, select 'Connect via Internet' even if you're in your own home (since selecting via private network requires you to have your PS3 on).

You should be connected then. Sorry my details are a little vague but I don't have my devices on-hand right now. Just reply if you have any questions or if you don't succeed.

Didn't see anything new I didn't know about, except for how the security cam functionality is supposed to work. I'll have to give that one a shot.

Still a good list for anyone new to remote play.

Two things bad about the remote play:

1) Internet remote start doesn't seem to work (not enough bandwidth?)
2) You need a video stream. It should be possible to not stream the entire ps3 interface. Like if I want to show a mp3 to a friend, no reason to stream those heavy visuals. Especially since many places I go, there is not enough bandwidth for a video+audio stream.
3) You can only stream. Again bandwidth limitations, which will persists atleast 5 more years in many access points of the world. But hey if I'm in brazil, and I want to show some cool movie to a friend there, I should be able to. It wouldn't be that hard to connect with the ps3, download a video/song/whatever and have it downloading most of it before I show it. I should allso be able to have lie there for offline access, and to synch it somehow with my cell phone. Now the last point is the only one outside of sonys control, so I'll forgive that one.

Oops that's 3. Sorry. Anyway, fix those 3 and we got a seriously nice dynamic duo.

I think I have an idea how all PS3 games could be played via the PSP, but it is not through remote play. The SONY locationfree base station connects to any device with component or composite connectors (depending on your model). Using the PSP locationfree software, you can connect to your basestation from any wifi spot and control any device connected to it through your PSP-- including your PS3 (with one major wrinkle). The only major wrinkle is, the locationfree basestation uses an RF blaster to control the connected device-- and PS3 is bluetooth. But if a peripheral can be made that can plug into a USB port on the PS3 as an RF input, in theory, you will be able to control the PS3 as if you were there-- including turning on off, playing games on the HDD or a disc in the disc drive. Any thoughts?

you can do quite a few things with remote play(i can even use the files on my computer through the PS3, using the media connect). i use it a lot because, my PS3 is in the basement, and running down stairs every frew minutes, is not an opption!

you have to enable the remote on/off on the PS3 for it to work. Playstation.com and the online manual really helps you set it up.

My favorite Remote Play convenience is being able to use the PS3's web browser so I can watch YouTube videos (which the PSP's web browser won't do).

If the button shortage is a problem for full remote play I'd be happy plugging a Sixaxis controller into the PSP to control the game, not practical for sitting on the bus but great for playing in another room in the house.

And how about rolling out a remote play client for PS2 owners who own the network adaptor? My PS2 console is gathering dust in the spare room but it would be good to hook it up to the old TV when the HD set is being used... same button configuration, but could easily plug in a Sixaxis via the PS2's USB port if tilting were required. The PS3 has enough spare processor power to run this sort of thing in the background when playing a game, how about it sony?
