We'd write a much more thorough review right now. But there's a problem --
Beats has taken control, and we find it difficult to stop playing it. Before you read any further, make sure you load the
PLAYSTATION Store, get your credit card ready, and download
Beats. It's only $5 -- you won't even notice the cost. What can you do in
Beats? A lot.
- Import your music -- and play it! Yes, Beats will detect every song on your Memory Stick and turn them into playable levels. There are multiple difficulties, and they very accurately correspond to the music. The advanced stages will also detect some of the finer nuances of each song. The amount of playability you have from this mode corresponds to how much music you want to put on your PSP. It can be limitless. And what does it play like? A lot like Gitaroo-Man (that's a very good thing). You'll hit buttons according to the beat, but they'll fly in from all sides of the screen, and you'll have to hit the corresponding D-Pad direction in tandem with the buttons on screen. Don't worry, in-game tutorials will teach you everything you need to know.
- Create your own music! Seriously. You'll get access to some rudimentary loops and samples, but you'll get everything you need to create your own tunes. Then, you'll be able to save your music to your Memory Stick.
- Play online via Infrastructure mode! Yes, you can go against other players online and compete in Beats challenges.
- Share your music online! You can also upload your musical creations and download other user generated content.
- Oh, and it's beautiful! Tons of animated skins bring the screen to life. This game is gorgeous.
We have nothing but praise for such an incredible game. It deserves more attention, and we
implore you to buy this game. You really have no excuse. Stay tuned for updated impressions.

Games looks good. I might get it off the Playstation Store
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 6th 2007 10:24PM
Wow...now I'm stoked to download this!!
Thanks for the quick impressions, PSP Fanboy.
...but you're probably not going to read this comment because you're too busy playing Beats :D
ryan @ Dec 6th 2007 10:32PM
So will it get pissed if I have custom firmware? Or can I buy and download this just like if I was running official firmware?
Andrew Yoon @ Dec 6th 2007 10:38PM
To be honest ryan, I haven't tried. Can someone else help us find out?
GoBob @ Dec 6th 2007 10:42PM
Works fine with CFW. The only thing I don't like is that Beats doesn't seem to recognize the .wma format.
Kspraydad @ Dec 6th 2007 11:11PM
You can share with up to 4 other PSPs don't forget (but show SONY some love and buy it yourself)
lenny0487 @ Dec 7th 2007 1:25AM
i am very, very happy about this game, downloaded it, and its going to be my new crack when im on the go! love it! anyone that has a PSP right now should download this immediately!!!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 6th 2007 11:01PM
stop....tempting.......me!!
Brandon @ Dec 6th 2007 11:04PM
Its only 5 dollars Hashbrown, just buy it!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 6th 2007 11:29PM
haha you're right. I'd might as well.
Hector Martinez @ Dec 6th 2007 11:11PM
See what an opportunity Traxxion missed out on? I can't wait to get my hands on this game. Loading up my song now.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 6th 2007 11:30PM
Seriously, Traxxion could've made LOADS of money on this. Now Sony's getting all the money...
I can't tell if that's good or bad.
Hostile @ Dec 6th 2007 11:37PM
It won't ****ing accept my credit card (Mastercard) even though everything I input is correct. Meh.
Don @ Dec 7th 2007 12:22AM
I have the same problem. I really want to try this game. Sony makes it so hard to buy stuff from them.
GoBob @ Dec 7th 2007 6:22AM
Man, it rejected two of my frigging cards. Third one worked!
Barndo111 @ Dec 7th 2007 12:07AM
Wow! This game is gorgeous! It's much more deep than I expected from a 5 dollar game. The gameplay is simple and effective. I really enjoy the visual customizations (I picked Rock as my background) and being able to play the game with any song that you want? Priceless. I actually played a game with a PS Fanboy Fancast, it wasn't as interesting gamewise but it's a possibility. (Don't worry guys, the actual Fancast is still damn fine considering it's over the phone.)
I'm kinda bummed about the .wma thing too but for all that it does I can hardly fault it for that one thing (although I like wma's better than mp3's more every day). But I've gotten into this with about ten songs already. I can't wait to play this against people online. Way to go London Studio! This MORE than makes up for Gangs of London...(which, although I initially panned it, I've been playing more and more of it's bite sized gameplay like crazy. Maybe it's some sort of Stockholm's...)
Now all I have to do is get good at Beats on expert. Oh how my thumbs are going to hate me.
S-RPG @ Dec 7th 2007 12:21AM
"...Beats is the best PSP game ever"
I think that honor goes solely to Jeanne D'Arc.
Second place goes to: The Legend of Heroes: Sora No Kiseki First Chapter and beyond. (I wish they would release the English translation. I played the Japanese demo and was hooked immediately, just like with Jeanne D'Arc)
Speaking of Jeanne, I wonder if they will release a sequel?
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 7th 2007 1:14AM
...he was being sarcastic. Don't take it literally.
But it's a damn good game.
Kaneka @ Dec 7th 2007 12:33AM
Agreed: this game is amazing.
required @ Dec 7th 2007 12:54AM
"...we implore you to buy this game. You really have no excuse..."
I don't use a PC running Microsoft Windows and since the Sony store requires such I am not allowed to purchase said title.
B1gC72 @ Dec 7th 2007 2:04PM
do you have a PS3? purchase it at the PSP store on your computer then go to your PSN download history on your PS3 and download it there.
required @ Dec 7th 2007 2:13PM
I'm strictly a portable gamer, therefor I don't have nor do I want a PS3/Wii/XB360/MSPC.
radpanic @ Dec 7th 2007 1:00AM
Yes, actually I do have a very good excuse: I use a Mac! The a-holes at Sony have completely left me(and thousands of others) out in the cold on this one. I wish I could download this amazing game, but I can't! WTF?!! sorry, rant over.
Noshino @ Dec 7th 2007 1:14AM
actually, I think there was word ont he street that there is a work aroudn for Macs...
Also, if you have a PS3, here is what Andrew stated in another post:
"Unfortunately, beats will not appear on the PS3. There IS a workaround. Purchase it on the web-based store. Then, go to your PS3 and enter Account Management -> Transaction Management. Go to View Download List and you'll see the PSP downloads there. Your PS3 will be able to download these."
Hopefully this helps you out =(
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 7th 2007 1:16AM
They're working on a Mac version according to the MTV interview. They'll most likely get it out at the beginning of next year.
radpanic @ Dec 7th 2007 1:20AM
Thanks Noshino, I didn't know about that. I'll give it a shot
Andy @ Dec 7th 2007 1:16AM
Yay! A new Pulse! But on a better system. Srsly, Pulse is fun but the iPod's screen is not all that good for playing games...
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 8th 2007 12:56AM
This is pretty different from Pulse, but it's pretty much the same idea.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 8th 2007 12:57AM
oops, i forgot it was called phase
hahaha i feel stupid.
Darkiewonder @ Dec 7th 2007 1:17AM
Very delicious game I must say.
I'm going to have to delete Wild Arms off my mem stick because i want to try different songs to see which synch up right.
but really. it's a fun an addictive music game!
sharing this game with a friend too. because he needed some colour in his life :3
Silver R. Wolfe @ Dec 7th 2007 1:42AM
Alright, so is there a limit to the types of songs that can be on here?
I'm using all mp3s, but some songs are working and some aren't. None of my songs by Modest Mouse or The Cars are registering. :(
daniel-kun @ Dec 7th 2007 2:19AM
I'll blindly buy this thing because of your recommendation. I know I can trust you, Andrew! :-)
And man this page has become lively. Never seen so much comments in so short time before. Great!
daniel-kun @ Dec 7th 2007 2:25AM
Baaaah it's 7,99 EUR instead of 4,99 :-(
Stupid Dollar :P
Chris Matchett @ Dec 7th 2007 2:25AM
I'm not getting this because I have an iPod with Phase. Phase is made by the Guitar Hero people and already uses music on my iPod.
Alien @ Dec 7th 2007 7:52AM
The game is awesome ... whom had thaught that this will be such a great game ? :D
HENDO @ Dec 7th 2007 8:26AM
its £4.99 on the UK site, but only $5 on the US site?
Rip off Britain at its best
aeron @ Dec 9th 2007 11:44AM
I got beats today and well, I can't play any of my songs.. They are all in the ATRAC format... Is anyone else having my problem??
phl0w @ Dec 9th 2007 11:24AM
Although it's €7.99 in Europe I might give this a try. What I don't like about the PS Store is that youdon't get to see the size of the download until you paid.
So, can somebody please tell me, how big the d/l is? I only got a 1gb stick that holds wipeout1 and some other stuff already, and according to the list of features you wanna have loads of music stored on your stick too.
Thanks!
Splatt @ Dec 10th 2007 12:41PM
D/L size is 237 mb
archtech324 @ Dec 10th 2007 3:49PM
This game is awesome. I downloaded it as soon as I saw it was available in the US and have been playing it non-stop. I love the PSP for its music abilities, and I am thrilled with the synergy of music and gameplay. If this had been another "Sorry, you can only play the songs we include" game, I would have passed over it instantly, but the fact that it can play any mp3 blows any other music game out of the water. I can now play through all of my favorite Beatles songs.
Come Together.
Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds.
I am the Walrus.
All on the PSP!
GooGooGaJoob!
gaetaonjeans3 @ Dec 19th 2007 7:02PM
this game is amazing!!!!!!:] one thing though. Whenever it loads up my music it only loads up about half of it 130 songs (i have 212 in my library). They are all the same file type and everything but it randomly selects only half of my songs to be on Beats. Confusion!?!DSGLA?!? oh well still the best game on psp to date!
