High Velocity Bowling includes custom soundtracks
Yesterday's PSN original, High Velocity Bowling, includes a long-awaited feature: in-game custom soundtracks. ripten discovered that you can play any music from your hard drive (although streamed music is not compatible). Hopefully, this is a sign that upcoming games will more readily sport this much-wanted feature.

Red Hot Chili Peppers? Good band too bad all their songs sound alike. Put on some Third Eye Blind then we can talk.

Evan Brown @ Dec 7th 2007 7:58PM
seriously? third eye blind?
WTangoFoxtrot @ Dec 7th 2007 1:33PM
wait so individual developers have to implement these features into their games themselves ? isnt this supposed to be something implemented by sony for the ps3's OS itself and running in the background when a game is active ?
Nate @ Dec 7th 2007 1:53PM
It *is* implemented in the OS. I recognize the icons and layout. The devs just have to choose to use it.
elephant_stone @ Dec 7th 2007 1:35PM
Wow!
They really sneaked this in!!!!
You would have thought they would have advertised this feature more as it would have deffinatly sold more!
Solace @ Dec 7th 2007 1:43PM
they mention it on the playstation blog.
i don't know - i think people buy games to play them rather than to listen to music as a main feature. ;)
Dehshizknight @ Dec 7th 2007 4:51PM
It was actually meant to be a surprise but on of the commenters on the blog found out and the poster said that his secret was revealed. Lol.
JerJerBinks @ Dec 7th 2007 1:45PM
If only it had the option to turn off all the in-game speech.
Ithilis @ Dec 7th 2007 1:50PM
They had to do SOMETHING to make this title enjoyable..
Hyams @ Dec 7th 2007 1:53PM
When do we get a review of this? I wanna know if it's worth downloading. ^_^
Bob @ Dec 7th 2007 2:03PM
@11, i'll give you a review of what I think..
Pros: In-game music is a nice touch considering the bleak default music is a bit of a drag.
The modes (epically trick mode) add an element of skill and fun.
Multiplayer mode is fun for up to (I believe) 4 friends.
Cons:
The spin system uses the L2 and R2 triggers which can be difficult to figure out and tweak, but after a while, it's like 2nd nature.
The only way to completely mess up a shot is to pretty much aim at the gutter, or when you're first experimenting with spin. Yes, if you throw the ball too hard, it "throws off the shot" but typically it's nothing that will completely mess up your shot from missing the pins, even if only one is standing.
The characters never shut up...their phrases get old fast and annoying, and sadly, you can't turn it down and crank up the music. Hopefully this is fixed in an update/patch.
The game overall is quite fun, I had a blast with a friend and suitemate trying to beat challenges in trick mode, or tournaments, or playing head-to-head.
Compared to Wii Sports Bowling, it's got prettier graphics, and the bonus of you're own music is a really nice touch. For 9.99$, it's not a "must own" in my book, but it's worth it if you're not willing to wait for a price drop.
Graphics- 9.5
Sound- 7
Gameplay- 8.5
Overall- 8.5 (estimate)
seansloan @ Dec 7th 2007 11:12PM
though i think these numbers are a little high.game is a lot of fun.Certainly worth 10 bucks. The tuitorial is not so good tho.kinda of hard to figure it out at first.Cant believe someone has already bowled a 300
Popfrogs @ Dec 7th 2007 2:28PM
RE: playing your own music.
Welp, that proves it. The PS3 has had this feature all along. XMB access has been up to the game developers for MONTHS.
Me @ Dec 7th 2007 2:37PM
Yeah I am confused. I thought people have been asking for this feature for awhile. And now some small time game implements it like it is no big deal. So if it is up to the developers then all that talk about the PS3 not being able to do this were wrong.
scratch @ Dec 7th 2007 3:42PM
I think that's just it, it's a small game. Thus the extra time and resources - development and system (eg. RAM) - were not such an issue for this game, unlike every other high-profile game that sony has to have been begging developers to get out the door, like yesterday.
I would imagine that XMB features will being to creep up in other downloadable titles, and soon enough some high-profile games too. Just my US $ 0.02.
ACEDOH @ Dec 7th 2007 2:40PM
How do we know SONY isn't working on implementing these ideas on their own. I think they are testing this to see how feasible it is. Kind of a BETA test without people actually being part of a BETA.
HAAS599 @ Dec 7th 2007 2:41PM
I really want to get this game but...
can someone explain how you hold the controller and swing and use the L2 and R2 buttons??
do you use your pinkie and index finger or what?
PSPDog @ Dec 7th 2007 2:47PM
Exactly. You use your pinky and index for L2/R2. Your thumb is used to hit X when necessary. It works really well.
Kspraydad @ Dec 7th 2007 2:53PM
How about we NOT give "ripten" credit for what the DEVELOPERS already admitted back on November 13th on the Playstation.blog
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/11/13/bowling-anyone/
Comment 15.
This was again mention in PS3Fanboy comments by PS3Fanboy users on Nov 15th
http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/expect-the-following-in-high-velocity-bowling-bowling/#comments
"ripten" doesn't need attention for 'discovering' what was already known.
seansloan @ Dec 7th 2007 11:10PM
off to a great start on the board at being a tool
xrich @ Dec 7th 2007 8:26PM
why do people care so much about custom soundtracks? just play your stereo if you wanna hear you're own music...whats the big deal?
sir_blazealot @ Dec 7th 2007 10:28PM
hahaha, that's funny - red hot chilli peppers are terrible, fo shizzle....bone thugs n bowling is the way to do it, specially when ya get all blazed out - this game is a pretty fun little download and the ability to play your music is what I feel makes this title - it would just be terrible to not be able to throw some shit on. Good stuff, IMO a better deal than PAIN - and that is fo sho.
_sean_ @ Dec 7th 2007 11:30PM
Me and some friends just played it, it is a blast.
It's kind of hard though, but I haven't unlocked any people or balls yet.
Elias @ Dec 8th 2007 8:03AM
Well I played it yesterday and I gotta tell you is really good game. That part of adding your own music is one of the best features of the game.
It feels like being in a bowling alley because they play music there and you can play the music that you have on the PS3 hardrive.
Love it.
wayhey @ Dec 10th 2007 6:54AM
There is a game demo on PS3 called mainnichi issoyo (I think thats what it is, I guessed the speling) in Japan, the game is also on the PSP. There is a video on youtube showing this game using streaming music from your HDD in-game.
Yes this is all down to the developers to implement it and I'm disappointed that Yukes didn't implement in-game music for the PS3 version of WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008 even though I'm not interested in that game.
