First screenshots of Phantasy Star Portable
Abbreviated PSP, Sega's upcoming PSP port of Phantasy Star Universe is set to enthrall the audiences that snagged a PSP to play Monster Hunter. Just like Capcom's RPG, PSP will allow collaborative RPG play with other players ... provided you're all in the same room. At least the style and graphical flair of the Phantasy Star world have come through successfully in these first screenshots of the game.

I'm sure it will be fun, but the lack of infrastructure seems like a completely brain-dead decision ... I just don't get how games like this, Call of Duty 4 for DS and others can be released without online MP that would completely *make* the experience!
Joshua @ Dec 9th 2007 11:36AM
Japan is different. Local multiplayer is very popular, so online isn't a must.
txa1265 @ Dec 9th 2007 11:56AM
I agree ... but this isn't Japan. Perhaps they should take note of the fact that although the Monster Hunter games sell well in Japan they really don't here ... and how multiplayer games do very well here.
Ben @ Dec 9th 2007 11:11AM
Personally, I find it hilarious that the PSP is pushing out graphics that the devs thought were adequate on the Xbox360 version of this game. Also, the lack of infrastructure means I won't be buying this. Oh well.
cafecito @ Dec 9th 2007 5:04PM
Personally, I don't give a crap bout infrastructure. Maybe it was left out cause of technical issues, who knows? All I know is, ad-hoc's enough for me.
Oh, and the game's looking pretty faithful to console versions, as long as I can see. I just hope SEGA doesn't use Monster Hunter's CRAP camera system... that would suck. But if I remember well, in the console versions the camera would follow you around a little.

Even if there isn't multiplayer, I will still have so much fun with this game! I was actually playing Phantasy Star Online for GC a couple weeks ago and thought "Hey, they should make a Phantasy Star for PSP!"
...wish granted.
Alien @ Dec 9th 2007 11:28AM
I really dont care for the lack of infrastructure ... I mostly play more than 90% of my PSP games in singleplayer ... still IMO , graphically it looks crysper than the PS2 version :D
Vetinari @ Dec 9th 2007 11:58AM
I find it freakishly disappointing that they aren't utilizing infrastructure more. It's like someone just set them up to spike the ball (infrastructure) and they chose to just bump the damn thing over the net. When are they going to pull their head out of the sand and see that multiplayer is the way to go? I dont have anything against single player, only that when you go through it, you're done, you've seen it all. Multiplayer adds so much more to games but they choose to ignore it on games where infrastructure should be a no-brainer. Too many games have come out lately that would be AMAZING for infrastructure, but they choose to be lazy and leave it out.. So now my PSP gets pawned and i get a 360, a system which actually recognizes the growing market of multi play. Maybe in a few years when 4 more infrastructure games are out, i'll pick up another PSP, but it's doubtful. Neat system, but the devs need to utilize its strong points instead of catering to the people who have groups of buddies that all have PSPs and the same game interests. Maybe common in japan, but if you're out of middle school you won't be seeing this too much in the states.

Lol.
"What are you playing?
"PSP"
"What game?"
"PSP"
"Yeah but what game??"
etc.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 9th 2007 2:42PM
hahahahaha that would be hilarious
Brello @ Dec 9th 2007 5:59PM
A little Abbot and Costello bit, eh?
Drdre74 @ Dec 9th 2007 1:44PM
I still have my Dreamcast disc. I must say I never did finish that game. I'll have to go back one day and play thru it again so I can get ready for this one.
nicolas.grube @ Dec 9th 2007 2:53PM
grafiks look pretty amazing!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 9th 2007 2:41PM
Hey no credit???? I submitted this last night to you guys!
Oh well, I won't be a sore loser. Glad to see you got to them anyways.
VENOM @ Dec 9th 2007 2:48PM
I'm buying it even if there is no online. When is it coming out?
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 9th 2007 3:23PM
No one knows. Most likely Spring 08
Jonathan @ Dec 9th 2007 3:31PM
wow those graphics are great..lmao that the same graphics are on a psp, ps2 and 360 game.
the fact this game lacks online means i won't buy it. period. it's not that i need online in my games, but i need online in my ONLINE games. This is designed to be an online game, and the interaction makes most of the fun. They cant weak it or whatever they like, but in the end, it'll still feel empty.
I bought Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and there is fun to be had, but looking back I rather I never bought it and I'm not making the same mistake twice.
Jonathan @ Dec 9th 2007 4:56PM
they can tweak it*
Trekster_Gamer @ Dec 9th 2007 4:30PM
looks lackluster graphically speaking no infrastructure?
I guess the devs (here at least) taylor to the crowd in Japan.
I was wondering how much in sales does Japan do vs the USA?
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 9th 2007 6:28PM
obviously the screenshots don't look as good when compared to seeing the game in motion. so reserve judgment until we see some videos.
bryansurvive @ Dec 9th 2007 4:40PM
why must we complain complain complain. No infrastructure no fun. i mean geez at least enjoy the fact that a psp game is coming out. a nice looking one. an adventure one.
Jonathan @ Dec 9th 2007 4:57PM
because it's not like the psp is desperate for games that i should be grateful for whatever comes out and throw my 30-40 dollars at it.
if it sucks, we should voice our opinion or developers will never learn.
bryansurvive @ Dec 9th 2007 5:06PM
understood. more online play damnit.
Brello @ Dec 9th 2007 6:15PM
I want a portable powerhouse with great games. I do not want my same favorites from the PS2 era kicked in the nuts, drug through the dirt then presented to me for $40. Do it right, or don't do it at all. That seems to be the trend, though. "How many features do we have to cut to get this to work on the PSP?"
disposition @ Dec 14th 2007 12:12AM
Look into x-link -- it allows people to play ad-hoc games online using only a laptop (and of course your PSP).
Brian @ Dec 9th 2007 7:48PM
I really hope this is coming out in English. Online would also be cool, but if not I could deal with ad-hoc support.
B1gC72 @ Dec 9th 2007 7:50PM
i was always curious about this game. everyone always talks about it with such a high regard. so i think i will see what all the fuss is about when it comes stateside.
