Get ready for some sprites: new Disgaea 3 trailer
The reaction to the upcoming PS3-exclusive Disgaea 3 has been mixed. Some Nippon Ichi fans are glad to have yet another iteration of their famed SRPG series. However, others are critical of the game's lackluster visual presentation. At first glance, the game looks like a PS2 game -- albeit, running in HD. We love the flashier spell effects, but we wouldn't complain seeing higher resolution sprites. The style is impeccable, but the tech behind it simply doesn't follow suit.
PS3 fans with access to the Japanese PSN can also download this trailer to their PS3s through the Store.

agree with you, but hell, we all know that Disgaea is top notch, it will shine despite te lack of "eye" resolution... amazing game interface/controls.....Nipon Ichi's masterpiece

i REALLY REALLY love this series... however i am really sad in the pants about the low res sprites. being on the PS3 and all i expect nothing less than Odin Sphere Quality sprites anymore. Dont get me wrong, this game WILL have all the humor and charm that the series is known for... But this is PS3... im waiting for my Anime Quality Animation & Sprites.

The developers prefer lower res sprites, according to them it keeps the soul of the game.

You're right, this looks like ps2 game. The problem is in the dynamics. It has that flat look of poorly-styled ps2 games. I didn't like that on last-gen, it looks horrible, now. They need to increase contrast and turn down brightness at the least for a quick fix, but really they're using too small of a palette. Doesn't look good, at all.

I'm always amused by the typical Japanese announcer style. It sounds like they have a huge amount of rage bottled inside, and are a wedgie away from doing a nutter. In fact, I'm surprised we don't see any news stories from Japan about announcers that have gone 'postal' with a samurai sword.
It's got to be a cultural leftover from their previously feudal society.

Well, even if they don't fix it up, you know you're getting your money's worth. I mean, this is a pretty long trailer, and already you can see the hundreds of hours of entertainment you're going to get out of this. It looks packed to the teeth with features, far more than Disgaea 1 and 2 combined, so think of it as spending $10 more but getting twice the game. I am very excited for this, because it's a game that can last you years, which is not something a lot of games can brag about. I'll definitely be looking to purchase it. I just hope they consider a budget price considering the visuals. lol

who cares? if the game is great, the graphics mean absolutely nothing! That is the spirit of a great game. Some put too much emphasis on graphics..

I actually think Disgaea 3 looks better on the PS3. The sprites give you an old school style to the game that we all love and almost infinite gamplay/replay value aswell. The feature of Blu-ray might be why the game is on the PS3,(CD for Disgaea, DVD for Disgaea 2.) with all that exesive space NIS has almost endless posibilites for Disgaea 3.^^
All the fans has to agree with me. All the new attacks and animations look really great.:)
NIS has truly understood what gaming is. Not grafics(Well mayby alittle) but the story and the gameplay, that is what makes Disgaea series so memroble.
Those who have'nt played a Disgaea game, has really missed something.

Can we please ditch the sprites and or at least use high resolution ones like in Odin Sphere? I paid for a 1080p TV and all I got was some low resolution sprites? At least bump up the detail in the environments or something. The only "enhancement" was that you can now spend even more time levelling your characters to 9999.
farfisa @ Dec 13th 2007 9:17AM
That trailer's worth it just for the music and narration!
Another thing about the sprites is the frame rate--like the flying dudes, you can really see where they could've made the motion more fluid.
Then again, I'm sure if they updated the sprites they'd get just as many complaints from "purists!"
