Firmware 2.10 is now available for download

Update: Unfortunately, some of our DivX files simply didn't play on our system. The ones that do work function perfectly. You can even apply video thumbnails as with any other file. WMV videos also work perfectly. Please leave your impressions in the comments section.

Damn PS3 Rules @ Feb 10th 2008 4:29AM
Hey I can't download this update strait to my system I need to Get it on my pc then transfer it How do I download it to my Pc
Doogwan @ Mar 5th 2008 2:41PM
I have just downloaded the new firmware onto my ps3, tried to put it onto my w960 flash and then to my ps3. The ps3 just says no applicable updates found - do i need to download subsequent updates for it to read this one or is it something else?
Lithgow @ Dec 17th 2007 11:00PM
I've got it guys. The playback is nice. Put in Smallville encoded in Divx, didn't look so hot. Tried FF VII Advent Children encoded in Divx, looked absolutely gorgeous. My Narutos from Dattebayo didn't play back, sadly, that was my main reason for Divx/Xvix support. (Yes, it supports Xvid also guys.) Dattebayo encodes them into Divx YV12 or something like that, it's not 100 percent Divx. Tried Scrapped Princess anime, looked absolutely gorgeous, but subtitles were cut off on top and bottom. So if you're a Divx/Xvid user familiar with PC's perfect playback, you will definitely be disappointed with this. If you have some trailers or something NOT illegal (not likely) then you'll enjoy this feature. BTW, the WMV playback is nice. You can download trailers from Gametrailers.com in WMV and playback on the PS3 nicely. Hope this is useful!
rockstar @ Dec 17th 2007 11:22PM
thats too bad, mine also (most of them) are from DB :(
eric @ Dec 18th 2007 1:42AM
i used the divx converter on my DB anime since they aren't 100% divx encoded and they work perfect. look better on my ps3 then on my damn computer
Kevin @ Dec 17th 2007 10:48PM
I just downloaded it.
Not huge for me but the Voice Changer is pretty fun.
Organic_Shadow @ Dec 17th 2007 10:51PM
"Voice Recording"? Wha? You mean voice input? There is no way to just record your voice alone.
rockstar @ Dec 17th 2007 10:52PM
Is it true that xvid isn't playable? Also the 2gb cap?
Anyone can confirm on this?
Tim Parsons @ Dec 17th 2007 10:59PM
Xvid playback works,. every downloaded movie I have and I have alot works with my PS3 now and they look better then on my Toshiba DivX DVD player,. better color and in 1080P ,. it's friggin' Awesome!!!
rockstar @ Dec 17th 2007 11:21PM
thanks dood.. now can anyone confirm the 2gb cap?
Mak @ Dec 18th 2007 2:55AM
The Xvid not working was invented by Joystiq to put their usual dampner on anything PS3.
Lets see how they turn today into a bad day. Full DivX and Xvid support, BD1.1, new visualization, voice changer on PS3, Internet radio on PSP.
Sure they will try and derail it by claiming that they have DivX files that don't play, but then the idiots cannot read, as it clearly states DivX 3.1 is not supported...
paul @ Dec 17th 2007 10:58PM
i'll wait till tomorrow to download. divx support isnt that big a deal for me
Jono @ Dec 17th 2007 11:03PM
is there an externbal URL to d/l yet? not @ home and want to grab it so i can install when I get home
Gluesniffer @ Dec 17th 2007 11:08PM
Just installed the update. ALL my xvid backups (done using fairuse) work. And look good/sound great! But im on standard def tv. I am backing up a movie to 3 gig right now to see about the 2gig cap as all my files are about 1.5gig.
samoon @ Dec 24th 2007 9:37AM
i downloaded it like an hour ago.. its soocool i love the voice changer!
Marco Cano Jr @ Dec 17th 2007 11:36PM
I was also waiting for this update so I can watch my anime and I've been having mixed result's. Plain and simple, some work some don't. Damn I'm was really hoping to finish watching El Cazador on my PS3.

streaming video saves room on your hard drive.........
and if you have less than 500GBs on ya PS3 then you are going to want to save that room til later........TRUST me
Popfrogs @ Dec 18th 2007 10:42AM
Streaming video isn't that great of a solution. However, an external USB 2.0 hard drive plugged into the PS3 is. :)
James @ Dec 18th 2007 11:12AM
I use the streaming video fairly well from my Linux box to my PS3. The reason I don't use an external drive is that my linux machine has drives in raid which serve as my poor-man's backup. The external drive doesn't provide that at all.
I use MediaTomb as my media server for UPnP streaming. TVersity doesn't look like it supports linux.
Game_playa @ Dec 17th 2007 11:40PM
why doesnt my Ratatouille movie in Dvix work please help..
ChodalBerryWagon @ Dec 18th 2007 1:24AM
yeah, I'm having that problem too.
I tried that program Sergorn suggested, but it says that the file is already unpacked.
#1FanBoy @ Dec 17th 2007 11:57PM
I can't stop looking at the new Earth music visualizer. Looks incredible in HD!
rothgar @ Dec 18th 2007 12:49AM
WHOA! good call on the earth visualization.
MGSteve @ Dec 18th 2007 2:41AM
Does look good - not much of a visualiser though really, is it!
Well, just went to view my DIVX movies that I ripped myself (still have the DVDs in the garage, so its legal!!) and none of them play. Just used the MPEG4 Modifier app above and found it doesn't work on Vista 64bit! So used an XP machine and it works. Just about to find out if it makes any difference to the DIVX files though!
Although I'm not impressed. If I have to process all of the movies I've got, it'll take ages (got around 80 or so movies).
Also not impressed at the 2GB limit. The Lord Of The Rings DIVXs I've got are all 2GB+, ROTK is 2.9!
All have AC3 audio streams as well, so it'll be interesting to see if it supports that... I do hope so.....
MGSteve @ Dec 18th 2007 3:00AM
Ok, AC3 streams work fine & the movies play now the bits have been unpacked!
Shame the rips look so poor quality now I've got used to Blu Ray!
Starfire @ Dec 19th 2007 1:28AM
Nice touch that- just saw it now. Looks like Sony are listening/thinking alike about making a media player that stands alone with things like that. Amazing!
Sergorn @ Dec 18th 2007 12:03AM
For the record : like some stand alone DIVX/XIVD players, it seems the PS3 XVID Playback doesn't like XVID videos encoded with Packed Bitstream - so essentially you need to use MPEG4 Modifier (http://www.moitah.net/) to remove the packbitstream (takes a few seconds) and it'll work just fine. (for instance the DB Naruto works fine this way). I think it'd be important to spread the word.
It seems however the update totally screwed up DNLA servers though :/
taz10_remix @ Dec 18th 2007 12:06AM
The firmware also tweeks the web browser to not gray out the background when you run it. Nice touch Sony.
Mike @ Dec 18th 2007 12:14AM
Streaming from Vista - works perfect. I hope they get Divx for the PSP soon.
rothgar @ Dec 18th 2007 12:49AM
that would make the psp almost 100% perfect in my eyes.
Keith @ Dec 18th 2007 12:58AM
yeah I can't seem to stream any avi files with Divx or Xvid via DNLA (tried bot Fuppes and Ushare). Every one of them get labeled as Unsupported Media. I even tried to Copy one to the PS3 via the XMB and it refused. I haven't tried any directly attached storage yet. Direct storage doesn't appeal to me since I've got over 3TB of stuff on my server.
Keith @ Dec 18th 2007 2:13AM
I'm having better luck with MediaTomb on Linux. I've managed to stream some HD wmv files and some old mpg files (it calls them all MPEG-2 but I know some MPEG-1). Still no luck with any AVI files.
Mikael @ Dec 18th 2007 3:34AM
Try to change the filename like this:
movie.avi
change it to:
movie.mpg
Joshua W @ Dec 18th 2007 12:22AM
Unfortunately, I can confirm that the 2GB "artificial" limit is in place for WMV (VC-1) and DivX files.
I'm using TwonkyVision.
Miraito @ Dec 18th 2007 12:23AM
I did not download this update yet, but I don't really feel excited. I just wish they improved the DNLA support with new features, such as sorting & searching. Why? Because with Nero MediaHome you don't need to worry about what your videos are encoded in. Just make sure you set the transcoding to MPEG-2 and you are flying. Play almost any video off your computer, wirelessly!
Popfrogs @ Dec 18th 2007 11:29AM
Yeah I'm a fan of Nero MediaHome also. It's the only DLNA app that looks good and works 100%. Only drawback is that it doesn't support searching in the stream (ff, rw, pause). However, once you see it sharing a file, you can copy that to your PS3 hd and it'll be in the native mpeg format.
ilike2game @ Dec 18th 2007 12:37AM
I wish they would add.AVI Support, that's my main format.
Extinction @ Dec 18th 2007 12:44AM
Um, this is AVI.
WeezWonder @ Dec 18th 2007 12:53AM
hey, ive only been using my ps3 for games and dvd's and after this article, i got really excited about watching divx on it as well. the truth is i have no clue what to do.
how do i get my divx files from my computer to the ps3? USB drive? anyone know a good site that will tell me how to stream from a pc? how about from a mac?
any help in the right direction will help.
Mike @ Dec 18th 2007 1:16AM
If you have windows vista it should detect the PS3...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=2mKI7ZHfNEA
rockstar @ Dec 18th 2007 2:52AM
If you're using Vista, just enable the media sharing under network and sharing. Then turn on PS3 and there you have it.
kentuckyfried @ Dec 18th 2007 7:28AM
You need to make sure the external hard drive (usb of course) is formatted as a FAT32 drive. You can go over the limit stipulated for FAT32 drives (normally...32 GB) by using a windows app called Swiss Knife or something like that. Check google....
Brian Spence @ Dec 18th 2007 7:30AM
You don't even need vista. If you have Windows Media Player installed, there's an option that lets you turn on media sharing (something like that). You have to choose the PS3 as the device to share with, and it should work. I didn't take the time to look up all the steps, but do a google search for PS3 DLNA or something like that.
emaxximus @ Dec 18th 2007 1:10AM
The new visual player is definately cool. Why wouldn't they mention that in the features list? Better yet, where could you find a FULL feature list for 2.10 without having to find tidbits of info here and there?
emaxximus @ Dec 18th 2007 12:08PM
....and anyone who says "playstation.com" is a total douche
Daizyujin @ Dec 18th 2007 1:22AM
I popped in an episode of Gekiranger in DIVX and it ran fine. Also tried a few wmv videos from IGN and found that one (HD version of Raving Rabbids Tour de France) had no sound. Otherwise very nice. I like the fact that I can actually copy it to the HDD unlike my 360.
Daniel @ Dec 18th 2007 1:19AM
^ Playstation.com
Wow, I'm loving the new Earth visual...that's flippin awesome! Especially on big screen in HD!
I don't care about xvid/divx support at all. But be interesting to see if more of the vids on my computer will play and not say "format not supported" other than that, meh.
The voice changer is awesome especially when used on video within Eye Create!
MCX @ Dec 18th 2007 1:39AM
Wow guys just realized that I can now download HD videos from IGN, Gametrailers, and GameVideos and watch them on my tv. Just wanted to share... damn now I need a larger HD.
MCX @ Dec 18th 2007 1:41AM
guess should have explained direct from the PS3 web browser and they download in the background.
Francis @ Dec 18th 2007 1:45AM
did anyone try out an xvid file with an ac3 audio track?
