Shooters occupy the majority of our nominations this year, but they're also joined a couple of the most innovative multiplayer titles we've seen to date.
And the nominees for PS3 Fanboy - Best Multiplayer Game of 2007 are:
And the nominees for PS3 Fanboy - Best Multiplayer Game of 2007 are:
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Infinity Ward | Activision

Call of Duty 4's RPG style leveling system, perks benefits and unique classes, along with its server-filling double EXP weekends, make it one of the most addictive online games of the current generation. Coupled with the fact that the game is a blast to play with friends, this is the strongest first-person-shooter on the PS3.

The Eye of Judgment
Japan Studio | Sony Computer Entertainment

Taking a multiplayer experience from real life to a computer game has been done countless times before, but never has a game so fully integrated the original feel of the activity into the emulation. With its classy card-reading technology, The Eye of Judgment retains the original collectible card game experience, but mixes it with high quality graphics and the ability to play against anyone in the world - and that's where its genius really lies. Never again will you need to venture down to the comic shop basement, you can play against anyone you like from the comfort of your own living room. Japan Studio | Sony Computer Entertainment

Rock Band
Harmonix | Electronic Arts

We wonder how many thousands of people had the same down-the-pub conversation that we did. "You know, someone should mix Guitar Hero and Singstar together. Maybe add a drum set in there? That'd be awesome." Well Harmonix did just that - and it is awesome. It's also one of the most engrossing multiplayer games around. Totally accessible for gamers of all abilities it becomes the centerpiece of any gathering, staying on the screen until the last person either gets a cab home or passes out.

Unreal Tournament III
Epic Games | Midway

The Unreal Tournament franchise has been synonymous with fast, fun online shooting. While they might have lost their way with the "200x" episodes, Unreal Tournament III is a return to its roots and feels much more like the first game in the series. A multiplayer marvel for two reasons, UTIII is excellent fun to play online against your friends, but the inclusion of downloadable mods made by PC owners makes it a true community experience. This is expected to be improved on in the future with official contests.Epic Games | Midway

Arguably the first of the PS3's "must-have" lineup, Warhawk is still one of the best online multiplayer games available. With jump-in, jump-out gameplay you're never more than a couple of minutes away from shooting up your buddies. Huge environments and a variety of vehicles spice up the game and this will be expanded upon before the end of the year with a whole new level as well as a new vehicle.

Junior @ Dec 18th 2007 9:06AM
SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!?! THATS PROBERBLY THE WORST ONLINE GAME EVER o_O ALL THE ERRORS OF DOOOOOM!!!!
RagingStormX @ Dec 17th 2007 1:13PM
Call of Duty 4........hands down. I haven't touched my AC because this is soooo addictive online.
Wonderflex @ Dec 18th 2007 11:03AM
touched your AC? What does that even mean?
Galley @ Dec 19th 2007 9:28AM
AC? That's an odd name. I call mine "Fred". and I touch him whenever I get the chance.
Michael K. @ Dec 17th 2007 1:18PM
warhawk, no contest
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 17th 2007 4:42PM
pretty much, yeah. we all know it's going to win.
Tim Parsons @ Dec 17th 2007 1:20PM
wow that's a wide range of gameplay styles for best mutliplayer.
Jason @ Dec 17th 2007 1:43PM
No doubt. On most platforms the multiplayer category would be all FPS games. This is a good sign for me, not being a huge FPS fan.
Wonderflex @ Dec 17th 2007 1:26PM
no love for Rainbow Six Vegas?
blitzcloud @ Dec 17th 2007 1:36PM
"patch is in the works". That was 7 months ago.
So...no R6V
cranium @ Dec 17th 2007 2:54PM
except that three of those games are on other platforms and the other two suck.
sirblazealot @ Dec 17th 2007 1:26PM
Rockband!? WTF!? C'mon-you gonna mention Warhawk, Unreal, COD and then....wait, Rockband? hahaha, wow! but seriously, I say COD as it is damn near perfect online, but then I might have to vote for Warhawk as that game is just bananas and is really on a level of its own, and people have eaten that game up.....I have to actually throw muh vote to Warhawk, WOOT WOOT seriously tho, it's a pretty fresh and crazy ass game online.
doug @ Dec 17th 2007 1:37PM
thats a tough one with COD4, warhawk and Rock Band all games I have and all games I love playing with friends. I think Rock Band wins with 4 good buddies though.
Wonderflex @ Dec 17th 2007 2:38PM
How on earth do you have 4 player Rock Band? Did a patch come out yet?
Nate @ Dec 17th 2007 1:42PM
What the heck are you babbling about?
Nate @ Dec 17th 2007 1:44PM
As someone else said - wow, hugely different styles of gameplay. I think that's actually a really good thing. COD4 and UT3 I haven't played yet, but played the rest....
I think Rock Band has to take it, hands down. No other game will let you play multiplayer with your in-laws, your grand parents, your landlord, and your gaming buddies. No other game engages so many people so quickly.
matthew_neitzer @ Dec 17th 2007 1:46PM
I say RockBand. Everyone has fun with this game regardless of their gaming preference. (Even if they have none)
JerJerBinks @ Dec 17th 2007 2:38PM
I would vote Rock Band if it wasnt for the Activision/Harmonix drama over the GH3 controller. What is the point of selling the game by itself if you cant use any of the available controllers?
Release the damned patch already!!!
matthew_neitzer @ Dec 17th 2007 2:51PM
well you can use any usb mic. but still, I don't think that the issue with GH3 detracts from the great multi-player of RockBand. Just my opinion though. :)
JerJerBinks @ Dec 18th 2007 12:56PM
Well, if you brought Rock Band in anticipation of the announced patch, and currently cannot use the 2 GH3 controllers that you own, then it might affect your multiplayer ability. Capice?
GORDON GARTRELLE @ Dec 17th 2007 2:05PM
COD has great multiplayer gaming though it's sometimes a bit too serious and over the top. Warhawk is just a bit more fun of a game with lots of variables and battle options/vehicles to choose from. I can easily go back to playing this game and have fun everytime. Never gets boring.
Davsot @ Dec 17th 2007 2:27PM
Warhawk
Haiddasalami @ Dec 17th 2007 2:18PM
tough choice...have to pick up eye of judgement soon
Merkley @ Dec 17th 2007 2:33PM
Are you kidding me to nominate COD4? So many PS3 players e have problems with it. PLEASE don't let it win or else it sends the wrong message to IW. Check the forums on how IW has provided patches for XBOX360 and PC but not even told the PS3 community if/when a patch is coming. They have not said a single word to the PS3 community in almost 2 weeks but regularly update the XBOX and PC forums.
EcoNut @ Dec 17th 2007 2:39PM
WARHAWK!!!!!
PeriodEndofStory.
:-)
Albert @ Dec 17th 2007 3:08PM
I think Warhawk should win it with COD4 trailing close behind...
loic54 @ Dec 17th 2007 2:50PM
COD4 hands down, but some people really suck at it, it's not even funny anymore.
Nacho @ Dec 17th 2007 2:49PM
EcoNut I couldn't of said it better.... I said it once and I'll say it again Warhawk - the most underrated online multiplayer in 2007. Has my vote!!
Boredatwork @ Dec 17th 2007 2:55PM
Between COD4 and Warhawk...Warhawk is waaay more fun! And I hope it will only get better with the expansion coming out this week.!
cooler2066 @ Dec 17th 2007 2:56PM
warhawk
Gexus @ Dec 17th 2007 3:00PM
Oh my God, I must say Warhawk...It's one of the best multiplayer game out there! And just when you think you've mastered the game...There's just always something more :D
erx3 @ Dec 17th 2007 3:01PM
Warhawk by far. Most fun I've had playing online. I love being able to jump in a game without having to wait for other players.
Carlos @ Dec 17th 2007 3:19PM
COD4 is the winner!
Jevanzz @ Dec 17th 2007 3:28PM
COD4 hands down. Never before have I played a game with such a fantastic online experience. Granted there are one sided games and long match finding times sometimes, but if you are in a well balanced match it's fantastic. On at least 2 occassions I've been in games where it LITERALLY comes to the last second, then the whole match flips.
Deathvein @ Dec 17th 2007 3:37PM
Unreal Tournament III.
It's UT dude! It PWNS all multiplayer games, across all platforms!
Imbro @ Dec 17th 2007 3:36PM
Warhawk! Well, it's the only one i've tried of those. (It was great though)
radioactiveseamonkey @ Dec 17th 2007 3:41PM
Warhawk is so much fun...if u want to play a match...
psn: parkd
Silver R. Wolfe @ Dec 17th 2007 4:20PM
Warhawk! :D
sami @ Dec 17th 2007 5:01PM
i'd probably say rock band, but i haven't tried it yet... what the hell, my vote goes to rock band!
Ian @ Dec 17th 2007 6:42PM
Anyone remember 'Resistance: Fall Of Man'? The game was a launch title (and in the UK that means it was launched in March 2007 so qualifies in that regard), and did everything right on day one.
* A lobby system which worked
* Lag free gaming
* High-def graphics (minimal toning down when on-line)
* Smooth game types
For me, and probably many other Playstation fanboys, this was the first multi-player FPS on-line experience I had and it blew me away! Sure, you can argue that it came out when no other games were worth playing but, for that reason, it makes it a superb game - Insomniac created a real high quality launch title months (and in some cases years) before anyone else on the platform. Three cheers for Insomniac!
RagingStormX @ Dec 17th 2007 7:04PM
I agree....I couldn't get enough of RFoM online, not to mention that thats the only game that allows 20 vs 20 online teamdeath matches (those were some sick matches...). But CoD4 came along and changed all of that.....right now CoD4 is king of online gaming for 2007.
bboston7 @ Dec 17th 2007 7:23PM
Warhawk wo0t!
Sprint @ Dec 24th 2007 9:29AM
Where's Resistance?
andrew @ Dec 17th 2007 8:14PM
warhawk for sure
jango fett @ Dec 17th 2007 11:43PM
u were wrong. the first must have title for the ps3 was resistance fall of man. but warkhawk because it was only multiplayer.
Mike Candelaria @ Dec 17th 2007 11:51PM
If warhawk does not win someone is smoking crack here . . . seriously it's the best multi player game I have ever played
Joey_Numbers @ Dec 18th 2007 2:58AM
UT3
Kxpuc @ Dec 18th 2007 1:12PM
