Play all your PS1 games on your PSP ... through Remote Play
Users have been reporting that Remote Play has been secretly updated in the last firmware revision. With PS3 2.10, PS3 owners that have a Remote Play-ready system will be able to play any PS1 game on their handheld. Yes, that includes both games downloaded from the Store and PS1 game discs. We've personally tried Wild Arms (the downloadable version) and confirmed that it will play via Remote Play. Our tipster tried playing Metal Gear Solid (on disc) and also found that it works. Happy news!
We find ourselves using Remote Play more and more with the inclusion of DivX and WMV playback. Now, PS1 support will increase our time spent with this feature.

Giga-what?! You can play any PS1 title through Remote Play now?
That is an immense feature if true. Why no publicity?
How is the performance though?
Vladimir356 @ Dec 18th 2007 12:12PM
now lets see some more ps3 support and maybe ps2 support!
Jason @ Dec 18th 2007 5:47PM
The problem there is the lack of an L2, R2 and a right analog stick on the PSP. You won't be able to play PS2 or PS3 game on the current PSP; but perhaps on a PSP2 in the future?
linebeginstoblur @ Dec 18th 2007 10:08PM
@ Jason
So you can't have PS3 support then? What about games like Lair? You can work around the L2/R2 and second analog stick. The only thing you absolutely cannot do on the PSP is motion control.
Jason @ Dec 19th 2007 4:54PM
@ linebeginstoblur
You'd have to do some modification to the code to make it work though, that can't be done with PS2 games or existing PS3 games that don't already support remote play. So future PS3 games may support remote play. I don't think PS2 games that use both analog sticks or L2 and R2 will ever work unless they are reworked and made available through the PS store.
Vladimir356 @ Dec 19th 2007 5:01PM
omg people.... have you ever played a ps1 game on psp? they have different controll schemes that you can use for the l2 and r2 buttons... not all ps2/ps3 games require 2 anolog sticks! and if all else fails, i can use my ir keyboard!
Paradox @ Dec 18th 2007 12:13PM
But what happens when the game you're playing wants you to change disks? :)
Vladimir356 @ Dec 18th 2007 12:19PM
you go to the ps3 and swap discs! ^_^
Moonkea @ Dec 18th 2007 12:19PM
Well, Gran Turismo 2's arcade disc certainly works.
I wonder how far this feature will go...
Kspraydad @ Dec 18th 2007 12:20PM
Wow...an awesome FREE and you never dreamed it would happen feature and we get 2/3 comments throwing up negatives.
James @ Dec 26th 2007 10:43PM
I for one am "throwing up a negative comment" because the PSP can do this *right now* with custom firmware, but the actual code to do it is 100% Sony original. Why haven't 95% of PSP owners been able to do it for the last year like I have? Because Sony doesn't want you to go out and buy a box full of PS1 games from somebody's garage sale for 10 bucks like I did, they want you to pay 5 bucks a game *again* (even if you already own it) to download it from their store.
I've played at least a dozen of my old PS1 games on my PSP and I couldn't be happier. And with CFW, I don't suddenly lose my game if I wander out of range of the WiFi signal I was using ;-)
Jason @ Dec 18th 2007 12:30PM
I bought my PSP thinking Gran Turismo Mobile would be released within it's first year, haha. But now I can play 1 and 2 where ever there is a wireless connection. Thats pretty cool.
Kspraydad @ Dec 18th 2007 2:56PM
GT Mobile is now officially dropped BUT there is an offshoot of GT 5 coming to the PSP 'right after' GT5 gets released. This according to Kaz of Polyphony.
Alien @ Dec 18th 2007 12:30PM
Great new feature ... this litle conectivity is allready more than what the GBA-GC conectivity cold have ever do ...
James @ Dec 18th 2007 1:01PM
You mean from a handheld and console released 8 years ago?
Brello @ Dec 18th 2007 1:24PM
@Alien
I hear the PS3 has better graphics than the PS2 could ever do, as well! Comparing to an older generation is kinda fruitless, no?
ACE @ Dec 18th 2007 12:43PM
Does this apply to ps2 titles for those of use that have the old 60GB?
merc25 @ Dec 18th 2007 12:49PM
Thanks but no thanks, I already could. Merry Christmas to PS3 owners with the PSPs from Sony and myself(I'm acting on Sony's behalf, of course).
Ps3 owners with no PSP can stare into and/or hop in the bottomless pit of hellfire. Yes, the PS3 channels ancient forbidden arcane magic that opens a portal for our world to Hell, tinker with the screen color and ratio to open a portal to one of the many netherworlds(say hi to Laharl and Disgaea 3 from me).
Brello @ Dec 18th 2007 1:15PM
I have two PSones, a PS2, and a PSP. If I need a PSone fix, I can already get it in spades. Would I have to leave the PS3 on for this? I'd rather not pull a couple hundred watts of power to play a game that can run on a 10W PSone. (or emulated on a custom firmware PSP, but I can't really count that) I'm not super energy conscious or anything, but this seems dumb to me.
disguy @ Dec 18th 2007 1:32PM
The psp has the ability to turn the ps3 ON and OFF. No reason to leave your ps3 on. Well, I guess when you want to fold.
Brello @ Dec 18th 2007 2:51PM
It's still powered on while you're playing. I'm sure some people will like this, but it seems like the PS3 is just tacked on. Being able to rip a PSone game from your PC to your PSP (with no way to intercept the file, ala Playstation Store Downloads) would be much more convenient. Then I could actually play multi disc games.
ultrasur1 @ Dec 18th 2007 1:43PM
after testing this out myself, out of the bunch ps1 titles that i've tested so far (wipepout 3, metal gear solid, crash team racing, tekken 3, tony haw's pro skater) they all are able to be played on my psp using remote play. the controls may lag a bit depending on the game and/or connection, but they all work. not too bad of a perk for those of us with both systems. it's a great feature.
a.j. @ Dec 18th 2007 1:59PM
sweetness.
emirabal @ Dec 18th 2007 2:36PM
Im not sure it makes sense to me, i like the psp for its portability, but if i can play the ps1 game on the ps3 im not gonna bother wit the psp, only benefit i see is if you share a tv then you can just turn on the ps3 and pump whatever games you got via the remote play. I guess it is convenient in a way.
required @ Dec 18th 2007 3:00PM
the PSP is portable, the PS3 is not. this allows you to play your PS1 games that are on your PS3 from anywhere your PSP has a internet connection, hence it being called remote play.
pspimp @ Dec 18th 2007 2:51PM
Can someone confirm this works on the PS3 40GB version?
Kspraydad @ Dec 18th 2007 2:58PM
Yes it works on the 40gb version. This has nothing to do with BC.
Shane @ Dec 18th 2007 4:27PM
This may be what finally tips me over the edge and gets me to buy a PSP. But first, I have a question for you that is somewhat related to this article:
If I download PS1 games to my PS3's HDD, can I transfer those games to a memory stick to play on the PSP? Yeah, probably a stupid question I know and I'm guessing the answer is 'yes.' But, I just need to hear it from people who know what they're talking about ;)
Shinogu @ Dec 18th 2007 4:41PM
Err... if you mean the PSN Store games, if you have enough space on your PSP's memory stick, yes.
hppypnts @ Dec 18th 2007 5:40PM
Wow I may buy a PS3 after this news, this probably works only with a PS3 that has BC not the 40 gig ones right?
Moonkea @ Dec 18th 2007 7:44PM
I've just been thinking of that myself - I've got a 60Gb EU PS3, and while GT2 works, its because GT2 is on the BC list.
It does seem to be "If the PSOne game plays on the PS3, it'll play on the PSP", so do some double checks before raiding Amazon for cheap golden oldies or something.
hppypnts @ Dec 18th 2007 9:49PM
I also wonder if this will work with my Japanese PSP-1000. Any ideas on that?
Brad @ Dec 19th 2007 1:34AM
Here's an idea:
Sony, please add the ability to play PS2 games on the PSP through Remote Play.
Now THAT would be a cool feature...
Christopher Gabriel @ Dec 19th 2007 6:17AM
Has anyone tried to play DDR with this new feature? A music game like DDR would be a good indicator of lag issues with your network.
Alien @ Dec 19th 2007 8:07AM
Brello : no its not , actually the N-gage and PC conectivity was much batter than the GC-GBA . They would have had much batter options to , just that they didnt used it . On the other hand Sony takes full advantage of it ...
FOXHOUND @ Dec 19th 2007 12:27PM
A very nice feature indeed. Though it does limit me from buying remakes like FINAL FANTASY TACTICS and CASTLEVANIA: SotN, since I have it for PSone.
I can say personally that I'm happy I can play MGS1 & VR MISSIONS on the go. :]
Trudy @ Jan 4th 2008 2:22PM
The new translation for FFT:WotL makes it worth rebuying. Trust me on this one.
