Official external battery charger found [Update]

[Update: The only difference between this and a previously released charger is that this Sony official peripheral is also compatible with the PSP-2000 series. At least, according to the packaging.

can a charger go bad? My son says his carger isn't working. When he plugs the charger into an outlet with the battery in place it blinks and he says it should not.

These chargers are already available in Canada. I saw them at Best Buy about a week ago. Approximate price was $45.
Virtuous @ Dec 20th 2007 9:35PM
Picked up an official charger today from Gamestop.
Damo @ Dec 20th 2007 9:49PM
It might be a different version, but these chargers have been available here for months, dare I say at least a year? I haven't checked out the specs so mebbe the current ones in PAL territories (found on http://www.dse.co.nz for $40NZD) are 230v only and/or only PSP-1000.

This is NOT news. I have had one of these for months. Yes, US version. Got it off EBAY for 10 bucks, and it is official. I don't know why this is being put out at news.
I got an official battery for 10 bucks, and this charger for 10 bucks. Got here in about 2 days, and I verified it with Sony after I got it that it was official. I didn't want any batter blast going on.
NukeAssault @ Dec 20th 2007 10:13PM
Ive never seen any. >_>
Drdre74 @ Dec 20th 2007 10:25PM
I bought one with a battery off ebay awhile back but mines not a Sony one. I got it for like 10 bucks with the battery. My PSP stopped taking a charge when plugged in so I had to get one of these to power up the battery. Its a pain when playing a good game since i cant just plug it in and keep playing. I have to take the battery out and charge it.

I picked one from Rogers video store for CA $4.99 two weeks ago. Now it's marked as $27.99 CA.
plyx @ Dec 20th 2007 10:59PM
I have two of these. I've had them for at least 4 months now. Got 'em at walmart for like $10 a piece.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 20th 2007 11:04PM
Cool peripheral. I might go pick one up and another battery.
Darren Tilley @ Dec 20th 2007 11:20PM
These have seriously been available for over a year, and I believe possibly since shortly after the PSP's launch. I remember seeing them at Wal-Mart last Christmas.
The only difference I can see is the packaging that states it is compatible with PSP-2000 batteries.
Rob @ Dec 20th 2007 11:23PM
I agree this is not news. It has been out for some time. I purchased mine in early 2006, and they had been out for a while before that.
vR @ Dec 21st 2007 2:21AM
Like the others have said, I've had one of these for over a year. Very strange post, indeed...
Tom @ Dec 21st 2007 9:48AM
Agree, not news. I've had mine for months. Works great with the larger 1000 model batteries, but doesn't work with the 2000 series. Maybe that's the difference. Maybe this is a 2000 series charger.
Tom @ Dec 21st 2007 9:50AM
Yep. Read the package. It works with both 1000 and 2000 series batteries. That's the difference.
Alien @ Dec 21st 2007 10:02AM
Great ... its not news , I agree , but I never knew that this works with 2000 versions to ...
Chris @ Dec 21st 2007 10:08AM
This is really surprising to see as news. I'm on my second one in 2 years (lost the first one). Picked up the first one at the PX and the second one at Wal-Mart.
fireflymr @ Dec 21st 2007 10:25AM
I bought this one last year... but it got stolen on vacation -.- yeah, people steal PSP-batteries and chargers :'(
tucker @ Dec 21st 2007 10:43AM
I just saw one of those in gamestop yesterday
PlasmaMonkey @ Dec 21st 2007 11:10AM
The big difference between this charger that you are reading about and the one that you bought years or months ago is that this will also accept the batteries from the 2000 series of PSPs. The product looks identical and the packaging looks identical to the one that was released quite some time back. This is indeed a new charger, but extremely identical to the one that was released awhile ago. Very confusing for the consumer as you can see. I wish that those nimrods at Sony would develop a different style of packaging and color coordination on the PSP-2000 line of products. You can't tell the difference on some of the products unless you read the packaging. Read the packaging on the above picture then read the packaging on the charger that was released long ago and you can see the difference.
prateeko @ Dec 21st 2007 1:46PM
How is this news? These have been around for quite a while now...
Tom @ Dec 21st 2007 1:48PM
Own both systems. The original charger will not work with the 2000 series batteries. Doen't quite fit because of a small tab on the battery. Believe me, I tried to make it work :) Anyway, this should accept both 1000 and 2000 series batteries. That's the difference.
