PS Fanboy Best of 2007: Best Music Game

Stay tuned all this week as we reveal the our nominees for the very best games of 2007. Winners will be declared on December 27th.

Music games have become a big thing recently. There's something about interacting with your favourite tunes which beats just listening to them. More and more games are taking advantage of this, with new and old franchises trying to offer the greatest music-based gaming experience possible. But which of the following is the best of 2007?

And the nominees for PS3 Fanboy - Best Music Game of 2007 are:

Guitar Hero III
Neversoft | Activision

The latest in the Guitar Hero franchise improves on the previous entries to the series by boasting an impressive number of master recordings. Despite being developed by Neversoft, rather than Harmonix, this time round the game still feels intrinsically Guitar Hero. The track list is great and the difficulty will keep you playing for hours upon hours before you beat it.

Rock Band

Harmonix | Electronic Arts

A combination of both Singstar and Guitar Hero (along with a game we've just made up, Drumstar Hero), Rock Band is the game people have been clamouring for since the original Guitar Hero was released. This game is constantly evolving thanks to weekly downloadable content and, when played along with a few friends, is one of the great co-operative gaming experiences. The out of the box track list is a great mix that will cover anyone's tastes, no matter their age.

It's no contest. Rock Band is by far the better game.

If anyone thinks Guitar Hero III is the better game, I'm sorry you're too poor to be enjoying Rock Band. I hope Santa is nice to you.

I have BOTH Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3 and I like Guitar Hero 3 better. I like the songs better and it has a much more challenging Guitar Chart. A lot of people also complained about how the Guitars and Drums easily break. Unlike the Guitar Hero Guitar which i probably dropped a couple of times and abused the strum bar too many times playing Dragonforce, Metallica, and Slayer.

The worst thing they can give me on Rock Band is The Outlaws which is a few seconds longer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Although Ill hand Harmonix for landing Tom Sawyer and Highway Star, that's it.

So I pick Guitar Hero III better than Rock Band.

I suppose it would be amusing, but there's already far too much negativity on the internet, especially in blogs and forums.

For the record: I'd vote GH3 for worst. A lot of the RB guitars have strum problems, but the guitar is far superior in every other way. The GH3 guitar not only has strum problems but the breakaway neck has connection problems too.

See? I just proved my point.

No offense but all these "best ofs" are doing is highlighting the complete lack of games for the PS3. When your only two nominees are also available for every other system you undermine attempts to highlight the unique characteristics of the PS3. Where is the Everyday shooter??? or sing star??? This site often talks about the PS3 as a world wide phenomenon but best ofs are only for the US? Sorry guys but this seems lazy.

Rock Band, hands down.
I might be slightly more inclined to consider GH3, except that with this patch business, I'm kinduv in a "boycott Activision" mood.

Both are game series created by Harmonix, and since the new Guitar Heros aren't made by them anymore, I'd have to say Rock Band. I'm not saying this in response to Activision wanting money for the Rock Band patch. I'm just saying that I believe Guitar Hero would never have been as good or have as good of a fanbase if Harmonix didn't help lay out the foundation for them. Rock Band is original while I see GHIII as nothing more than another company's imitation of Guitar Hero.

Alas, I own neither of these games. My vote goes straight to Everyday Shooter, regardless of nomination.
