PS Fanboy Best of 2007: Game of the Year

Finally, this is where we get to decide the very best of the best. Disagree with our choices? Don't think we nominated the right games? Good! You'll be able to vote for your favorites starting this Sunday.
The nominees for PSP Fanboy - Game of the Year are...
Beats
London Studio | Sony Computer Entertainment

Also nominated for: Best Music Game, Best Downloadable GameLondon Studio | Sony Computer Entertainment

Why it should win: No other nominee costs $5 and offers as much potential gameplay as Beats. The game really delivers an experience that's uniquely PSP, capitalizing on the system's media, gaming and networking capabilities.
Why it shouldn't win: The game doesn't work with every MP3, and doesn't work with any other kind of music file. The notes are generally accurate, but nothing beats a human-crafted notes sequence.

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Nippon Ichi Software | NIS America

Also nominated for: Best Strategy Game, Best StoryNippon Ichi Software | NIS America

Why it should win: Of all the SRPG games nominated this year, none are as complex (or as funny) as Disgaea. The port from PS2 is stupendous. Not only do the visuals hold up well, but there's new content to be found as well (the added Etna mode is quite a surprise!).
Why it shouldn't win: It's still a port of a PS2 game. Also, it's ridiculously complicated, and many casual gamers will find themselves scratching their heads in confusion trying to learn every tactic in the game.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Square Enix | Square Enix

Also nominated for: Best Strategy Game, Best Story, Best Original SoundtrackSquare Enix | Square Enix

Why it should win: Because Tactics is considered one of the best SRPG games ever created. Add beautiful PSP-exclusive cutscenes, a marvelous new translation and a few new sequences for the handheld, and you have a classic that's made even better.
Why it shouldn't win: The f-r-a-m-e-r-a-t-e can be quite p-a-i-n-f-u-l. With no graphical upgrades to speak of whatsoever, it's inexcusable that this port of a PS1 game should run so sluggishly.

Jeanne d'Arc
Level-5 | Sony Computer Entertainment

Also nominated for: Best Strategy GameLevel-5 | Sony Computer Entertainment

Why it should win: It has the best graphics of the three SRPGs on this list, and is the only one made exclusively for the PSP. Also, the controls are fantastic in Jeanne, thanks to its full 3D camera. The story is fun, and the gameplay is fun for SRPG veterans and newbies alike.
Why it shouldn't win: The story itself is great, but there's very little attention placed on the ancillary characters. With the right combination of skills, some characters become nigh unstoppable, making the game a bit too easy for its own good.

SOCOM Tactical Strike
Slant Six | Sony Computer Entertainment

Also nominated for: Best Strategy Game, Best GraphicsSlant Six | Sony Computer Entertainment

Why it should win: Quite possibly the most beautiful looking game on the system, Tactical Strike pushes the limits of PSP hardware. The gameplay is equally compelling, with some of the most visceral strategic battles found in a military game.
Why it shouldn't win: Those expecting a traditional SOCOM experience walked away with a very bitter taste in their mouths. The levels in the game can last up to two hours each -- inexcusable for a handheld game. And with 27 missions total, this game might be too long for the pick-up-and-play portable gamer.

Sony Bend | Sony Computer Entertainment

Why it should win: Logan's Shadow excels at so much: from its gameplay to its graphics, to its music, there's almost nothing the newest Syphon Filter does wrong. It may look like a PS2 game, but it's PSP exclusive for now.
Why it shouldn't win: Some players may never adjust to the very complicated control scheme of Logan's Shadow. While it's awesome that you can break someone's neck, duck behind cover, and remote detonate a sniper explosive, some may argue that Logan's Shadow would work much better on a console than on a handheld.

eljuancho @ Dec 21st 2007 11:13AM
where in this list is SIlent HILL 0rigins=¡??????????
Alien @ Dec 21st 2007 11:26AM
Silent Hill should be there , and so should Crush and Ratchet and Clank ... still IMO the best game of the year is Logans Shadow , so at least its there :)
merc25 @ Dec 21st 2007 11:33AM
Yeah I'm voting for Dead head Fred or Silent Hill for Game of the Year. Castlevania also should have been nominated for this list, as it looks like this list is just Best Strategy + Beats and Logan Shadow. I would have removed FFT, JDA, and Socom(not my tastes) to make room for the games I've listed above.
merc25 @ Dec 21st 2007 11:36AM
curses I forgot Crush, thanks Alien for reminding me. That game definitely should have been added to my list and the official list.
Brello @ Dec 21st 2007 4:42PM
From someone who doesn't care about SRPGs or JRPGS, I agree.
EDW @ Dec 21st 2007 12:26PM
Jeanne D'Arc gets my vote easily.
Tristan @ Dec 21st 2007 12:38PM
What I would pick Disgaea, hands down, but SOCOM looks hot, were the controls good in it?
Andy @ Dec 21st 2007 1:00PM
Jeanne d'Arc. Easily the best game on the list, IMO. Please, don't pick one of the ports. Yeah, they're good games, but that'll just be adding fuel to the proverbial fire in the war between DS and PSP fanboys.
Snailking @ Dec 21st 2007 1:07PM
Crush gets my vote...
caliwrestla @ Dec 21st 2007 1:28PM
syphon filter ftw
Alien @ Dec 21st 2007 1:53PM
To bad that we cannot have other region games to ... Crisis Core and Patapon would have deffinatly be on this list :(
Potent1 @ Dec 21st 2007 1:59PM
Syphon Filter Logan's Shadow has to win. It's simply the best game in 2007. The rest are strategy games, and some of those are remakes. I think the best original game was Logan's Shadow. Those other strategy games are great, don't get me wrong, but pulling off a strong third person shooter on the PSP was amazing. Strategy games weren't as restricted and hard to deal with as a shooter, (i.e. No 2nd analog stick.) so that's why I think Logan's Shadow should win.
pixelator @ Dec 21st 2007 2:06PM
Hey Andrew - looks like I'm not the only one who thought Silent Hill was considerably better than you guys did. :p
I agree SH should be on the list, but with Jeanne actually taking the award.
NukeAssault @ Dec 21st 2007 2:20PM
Jeanne d'Arc
Even though i dont own it... It looks like the only SRPG id buy out of the three.
Saffie @ Dec 21st 2007 2:40PM
Jeanne d'Arc! Jeanne d'Arc!! Jeanne d'Arc!!! FTW
runemaster @ Dec 21st 2007 3:11PM
Wheres Monster Hunter Freedom 2!!!!!
CONFUSEDgam3r @ Dec 21st 2007 3:19PM
CRUSH! I mean, come on. Beats was good but NOT better than Crush. HECK, even Lumines II was better than HALF those games. Which on of you is choosing random games?!
None of these categories have been true to the games that were ACTUALLY GREAT! Did you guys forget all about every game that was released before July?
Andrew Yoon @ Dec 21st 2007 3:56PM
Lumines didn't come out this year.
CONFUSEDgam3r @ Dec 21st 2007 6:51PM
Oh. Well I better eat my words. Pass the salt :)
I could have sworn that it did, luckily I didn't though.
Kattleox @ Dec 21st 2007 3:50PM
Jeanne d'Arc. It has an incredible story, and it perfects the genre. FFT is an amazing game, and Disgaea is too, but they just ARE their genre. Jeanne d'Arc is the pinnacle of the SRPG, and should be appreciated for accomplishing this--a cross platform feat--on a handheld.
Also, Disgaea and FFT are ports of old games. Dont take me wrong, though. SF and SOCOM are both excellent games, but you don't really feel much passion come out in them. In Jeanne, it feels like Level-5 really put in a piece of their collective soul.
(a little story: when I go to the store and see Jeanne for 29.99, I'm glad that I bought it for 39.99. Level-5 deserves my money, and this award.)
ryan @ Dec 21st 2007 5:38PM
Jeanne D'Arc was released at 29.99, not 39.99. So if you paid 39.99, you got taken. Correct me if I'm wrong.
merc25 @ Dec 21st 2007 5:49PM
Ryan, you are quite correct. Any amount over 29.99 all goes to the store that sold it to him, not the developers or publishers.
ultrasur1 @ Dec 21st 2007 3:52PM
jeanne d'arc, i agree
crush needs to be eligilble too though. that's a favorite of mine
clankman @ Dec 21st 2007 4:07PM
Crush, or Socom, or SF.... I choose socom.
Brello @ Dec 21st 2007 4:38PM
Someone certainly likes their strategy games, eh?
That being said, I did actually like SOCOM quite a bit, and Logan's Shadow as well. Still, Crush gets my vote. That game was great.
biffpow @ Dec 21st 2007 5:06PM
Jeanne D'Arc gets my vote. It reset the standard for the genre and it made me glad I bought a PSP in the first place. It has its faults, but it's very enjoyable and it's exclusive to the system.
I can't get with giving a port the best of the year, and Beats is about as complicated as a game of checkers. There's not a lot of "game" there, if you know what I mean. That said, I have not played Logan's Shadow. The learning curve looks practically vertical, so I've been afeared.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 21st 2007 5:56PM
Out of all of these it's........Syphon Filter. The way they described it was a dead giveaway.
And I'm happy with the decision. Fantastic game, and the controls aren't that difficult to learn!
German @ Dec 21st 2007 6:22PM
Best game I say...
Logan's Shadow!!
cafecito @ Dec 21st 2007 8:43PM
I HATE Logan's Shadow. It should've had a much simpler control scheme, like the one from the PS1 games.
Rodec @ Dec 22nd 2007 12:15AM
Jeanne d'Arc
jango fett @ Dec 22nd 2007 12:42AM
no metal gear solid portable ops?????????????????????????????????????? WTF dude WTF?????????
Barts_706 @ Dec 22nd 2007 7:10AM
CRUSH, FTW!
Payne @ Dec 22nd 2007 1:26PM
Wheres Brave Story???? it was such a dope game!!!
But since its not here, Jeanne D'arc gets my vote
Lard @ Dec 22nd 2007 10:44PM
No Silent Hill, no awards as far as I'm concerned.
Chris @ Dec 27th 2007 4:51PM
Monster Hunter Freedom 2! Literally months of gaming packed into that little UMD
