Wipeout HD: 1080p, 60fps and jaw-droppingly gorgeous
Did you hear that thud? That's the sound of our jaws accelerating to the floor, smashing into a million tiny pieces. New images of Wipeout HD have surfaced at PlayFrance, and they look absolutely stunning.
What makes this more impressive is that all of these images will be running in full 1080p HD resolution, and at a silky smooth 60fps. That's almost unheard of in this generation of games. Imagine how exhilarating it will be to race these stunning tracks with Wipeout's trademark sense of speed.
The French interview also reveals a few other interesting tidbits. Development of the game started less than a year ago, with a team of only six people. The team has grown to about 30 people now, with 3 of them having worked on the original PS1 Wipeout so many years ago. Although the game is just an HD version of the PSP games, the reworked textures and graphics will make it feel like a completely different experience. Also, expect licensed music from Kraftwerk, Mason, DJ Fresh and Stanton Warriors to return -- this time in glorious 5.1 surround sound. We can't wait for more.

WOW! Is this for real? Now THIS is what the PS3 is all about. I think it might be safe to say that this will be the BEST WIPEOUT EVAR!
TripleTags @ Dec 26th 2007 1:13PM
GOD WHEN!?! For that matter, does anyone know why the PSN content has been so "surprising"? As in no official like release dates?

I can see playing this for a while if it comes with online play, rankings and the ability to play your own custom music. I would absolutely love to load up the Wipeout XL soundtrack and let my senses bleed from overload.
Here's to hoping it gets integrated with www.wipeout-game.com. :)

It was confirmed last month that online play was taken out to better optimize the single player experience. Now if I could just remember which magazine it was in. I believe it was also mentioned on this site some time ago.

Sick! I was on the fence about getting this but now, it made my list.
alienclays @ Dec 26th 2007 3:14PM
i thought ounline was taken out due to home and other game 2.0 features not being out yet.
Brad @ Dec 26th 2007 3:25PM
I sure hope it has on-line play. I think they'll sell 4x as many copies if it is released as a relatively cheap PSN download with on-line, or even just head-to-head, play.

Freakin' Sweet!

Any idea on the cost of the game?
el serpiente @ Dec 26th 2007 4:17PM
Damn, the wait has been too long for this game. There really should have been a launch day wipeout for the PS3 instead of motorstorm, but if this really feeds the speed junkie then all will be forgiven.
NACHO @ Dec 26th 2007 4:19PM
$10-$20 has me sold, on that pic alone

4 and 7: I would be _very_ surprised if WipEout HD didn't have online play.
I don't understand a lot of the interview this story refers to, even after getting babelfish to translate it, but Studio Liverpool's Berry Hake refers to online play clearly and repeatedly, here for example: "And, of course, the combination of graphics in 1080p and 60 images a second and of the play on line makes really the difference on a television screen."
It's going to be sweet! I'm just glad all those many, many hours I spent learning how to get round the tracks in Pure won't be totally wasted. I wonder if they will be featuring tracks from Pulse.
mizkhak @ Dec 31st 2007 7:21AM
I don't mean to spoil your party (and I'll most likely be downloading this as well as soon as it's out), but have a look at those images: 1080p, 60fps, AND full screen anti aliasing?
No way.
Well, maybe those are in fact in game screens, but if they are, then they might as well be from a special version putting out extra shiny pics at –say– 5fps or something. Don't be fooled so easily, the game will be fun, I'm sure, but the real graphics will get stripped down a bit to improve performance.
AL7AIR @ Dec 27th 2007 1:14PM
Why not? WipEout isn't a polygon intensive game per se and WipEout Pure/Fusion looks stunning on the PSP, with a lot of sights to look at, other than the straights and turns ahead of you. So I don't think it's impossible that the development team achieved 1080p @ 60fps and full screen anti aliasing on the PS3. And if not? Are you really looking for a single non anti aliased pixel when you are cruise(missile)ing down the track at break neck speeds?
xbotFragger @ Dec 27th 2007 7:14AM
I never played a Wipeout game before, but im playing this one.

Please have split-screen 2-player mode... don't forget us who have real friends to play with...
