Did you hear the news?
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare won
Game of the Year on PS3 Fanboy. (
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune won the reader's vote.) So, what did other major media outlets pick as their PS3 GOTY? We searched the web and found out.
- GameDaily chose Call of Duty 4. "The campaign excels where most of its competition fails, delivering a nail-biting experience we couldn't walk away from until the explosive finale."
- GameTrailers chose Call of Duty 4. "The authenticity on display here is to be commended, getting you as close as you can possibly be to something that far braver people experience--without the risk."
- GameSpot chose Call of Duty 4. "Modern Warfare is now the benchmark against which all console shooters will be judged, and we're not expecting it to be bettered anytime soon."
- GameSpy chose Call of Duty 4. "A game that hit every target it aimed for, from its gripping single-player campaign to the ridiculously addictive I've-almost-got-enough-XP-for-that-cool-gun multiplayer."
- IGN chose Uncharted. "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune serves as the culmination of fun gameplay, an immersive story, stunning graphics, superb sound and characters you can connect with."
Looks like the critical mass agreed with us on the incredible power of
Call of Duty 4. Did you enjoy the game as much as we did?

I loved CoD4, but Uncharted blew me away hands down. Best game of any platform! Yes even better than Mario 64...I mean Mario Sunshine...I mean Mario Galaxy.
jango fett @ Jan 1st 2008 1:02AM
so what you saying? that their all the same? i dunno i havent played them. only m64.
Paul Lach @ Dec 31st 2007 5:13PM
I have to agree with Ishimaru, Uncharted was probably the best game I have ever played! Granted, I am still working on COD4.
Kspraydad @ Dec 31st 2007 5:17PM
My son STILL hasn't opened UC yet so I'm still playing CoD4.
CoD4 is good but very short (and I'm VERY slow at shooters) and the online is frustrating a good deal of time.
I'm really looking forward to UC.
Vincent @ Dec 31st 2007 5:33PM
Haha just convince him it will be nice to try out his other game, I have accompanied your excitement since the GOTY post, you are one patient dad!
aquastorm @ Dec 31st 2007 5:24PM
I feel that COD4 was WAY overrated it is just like every other military shooter that has come before it, one scripted event after another.
Haiddasalami @ Dec 31st 2007 5:30PM
thats COD for you. I loved COD though havent gotten around to playing single but been spending time online. Though I have seen a large rise of new PS3 COD users. Its fun to kill them...i remember the time when I was a noob. I havent got UC YET as I got R&C and Skate. My parents gave me money but I prefer to buy games myself. UC and Unreal are next...then prob wait it out till GTA4. It would have been HAZE but rumour has it is delayed..
mcscan @ Dec 31st 2007 5:29PM
as someone who is more 'hardcore' I thought CoD4 was/is a brilliant game. Love the multiplayer. Uncharted was a huge breath of fresh air, and one of the only games I've ever played where the cutscenes were a reward for playing the game.
Popfrogs @ Jan 1st 2008 12:25PM
The more I play COD4 the more I'm disappointed with the way weapons are handled. In Battlefield2 you can switch fire modes between burst, full auto and single shot. COD4 locks you in to a specific fire mode for each weapon and feels cheap as a result. It kinda messes up the balance for me.
www.PSvsXbox.com @ Dec 31st 2007 5:57PM
I'm sorry for asking, but doesn't CoD4 need to be a PS3 exclusive to be considered game of the year for that system?
Ishimaru @ Dec 31st 2007 5:59PM
Technically? Yes it really should be.
Bernz @ Dec 31st 2007 6:05PM
I've been thinking of getting a PS3. Is there any game out that is worth getting a PS3 for?
idenowhereiam @ Dec 31st 2007 8:27PM
exactly it should have been uncharted or ratchet for PS3 game of the year and COD4 for just plain goty.. or atleast nominated in that category.. for console specific goty awards it should be exclusives.. but thats my opinion...
Andrew Yoon @ Jan 1st 2008 1:41AM
Why should a game be exclusive to a system to be considered to be GOTY? It's on the system, so therefore it's eligible. We only care about playing the best games on PS3, regardless of its exclusivity or not.
Joe @ Dec 31st 2007 5:59PM
I liked Call of Duty but for me after the the story mode was done I was done with the game. I am not that big of a fan of multi player games. But Uncharted really is a great game and that game should have gotten more awards it is a PS3 only game and out of CoD4 the 360 version is better.
So I would have though more people liked Uncharted but I guess not.
Bernz @ Dec 31st 2007 6:07PM
From what I hear, Uncharted is not unique but it is well done.
Zombie Huggles @ Dec 31st 2007 6:15PM
I beat CoD4 in a single night...truly, I didn't have a lot to do. But it's only about 4-5 hours story, and it's also very disappointing...to me. The campaign is simply a collection of shooting galleries. You go to one section, find a hiding spot, kill 50 respawns, move-up 20 yards, find a hiding spot, kill 50 respawns. I don't know why this game is praised so much. I'm sure the multiplayer is fun...which I didn't try, but the single player was weak...besides the sniper mission, that was actually a lot of fun and intense. i"m going to rate CoD4 is the most overrated game of '07.
www.PSvsXbox.com @ Dec 31st 2007 6:22PM
That is what he COD franchise is known for, shooting gallery, but with intense action and solid frame rate, graphics and sound. The multiplayer is the the jewel of this game. I hope you get to try it. I've been playing it on XBOX live and it is a lot of fun!

Gotta flippin' play it on Veteran mode. Its soooo insanely awesome on veteran mode.
Ruben @ Dec 31st 2007 6:23PM
Bernz, it is unique but many people that have not played it say it is another Tomb Raider when it really is not. But many games are worth a PS3: Uncharted, Warhawk, R&C, Heavenly Sword, COD4,, Motorstorm, Burnout and upcoming titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze, Killzone 2, Gta 4, Little Big Planet, Final Fantasy 13 and versus 13 which is action if you don't like rpg's and Resident Evil 5, home even more, and people say the PS3 doesn't have any games. Right now I'm having a nonstop blast with Motorstorm, Def Jam Icon, Fight Night 3, Skate and Warhawk! Also the game demos we get every week fill those 5 minute bore spots. Yay PS3!
dustandechoes91 @ Dec 31st 2007 6:37PM
I would say uncharted but then again I havent played cod4 yet(besides the pc demo)
Titty Pink @ Dec 31st 2007 8:06PM
Uncharted is NOT a Tomb Raider clone, BUT if someone asked me to compare it to any existing game I'd HAVE to mention Tomb Raider. I mean the opening scene is him RAIDING a coffin. Seriously though, I think Uncharted is the best thing going in terms of graphics and story, especially if you want to get away from shooters for a while. Between Resistance, R6 Vegas, Warhawk, and Call of Duty I needed a change for a bit. I bought Rock Band (SICK!!!!) and Uncharted for xmas and was very impressed. Whereas Gears was grey, black and red (but the graphics were awesome), UC is colorful and full of life. The shadows, lighting effects...hell, I had a friend over to check it out. He didn't even know to move the character in the first jungle stage...because he was WAITING FOR THE CUTSCENE TO END! Graphically, no question, UC has set the bar for PS3 titles. You won't be disappointed. I voted for COD4 as game of the year BEFORE I played UC. I haven't touched COD since. And for COD, start on a hard difficulty setting or as many have said, it's a 5 hour deal. The AC-130 mission is sick though, as well as the sniper stuff. Hell its great all around to me as well, but I have to give the edge to UC. It feels fresh. We're only a year and change into the PS3's existence. If this is what we get at this point, imaging what will be out 2 years from now. All I have to say is MGS had better have it's shit together. UC set the bar pretty high!
Efeez1986 @ Dec 31st 2007 8:13PM
Uncharted is not only the best game of the year, but it is in the top 10 for best games of all time. Everybody is bias against the PS3, that's why they don't want to admit that Uncharted is the best game of the year. If Uncharted was multiplatform or exclusive to the 360, people would give the game it's well deserved respect. Then you have the other idiots who don't like the game because you play as an average joe, instead of a big muscle man with huge armor. What the hell is wrong with people nowadays.
chasegamez @ Dec 31st 2007 8:32PM
Uncharted hands down
drdre74 @ Dec 31st 2007 9:01PM
I love Call of duty I just got it and playing alot of online battles. GOTY goes to Uncharted. As a single player game that is the best hands down. Story, Design, Graphics and character development it cant be touched. The game is great. Sure it has no online but so does 90% of the so called greatest games ever to come out. People are too stuck on games having online that they can;t see a true gem.
Vince UK @ Dec 31st 2007 9:08PM
COD4 was good, very good in places, but Uncharted was so much better as a single player experience.
COD4 should win for it's hours and hours worth of multiplayer action though.
Rubber Biscuit @ Dec 31st 2007 9:25PM
Uncharted is it. COD4 is totally overrated. The same COD formula with a Ghost Recon setting (meaning fast, with no squad control). Graphics are good for the PS3, but don't really rank up there with the best for the system. For the 360, they are unparralleled of course. For the PS3 alone: U:DF, UTIII, Heavenly Sword (most underrated game for the year - and best graphics with levels with, no kidding, 1000 enemies onscreen at once - nothing else like it), R&C, Skate are all far superior and worthier of GOTY. Haven't played Rock Band.
John @ Dec 31st 2007 10:31PM
Haven't played Rock Band? My God man, get out there and get it. Just today I was at a friend's and played Guitar Hero III for the first time. Not only are Rock Band's controllers superior, the graphics are way beyond Guitar Hero III... the character models, the various lighting techniques, the sound effects... you simply must get this game, it is my most addictive title this year.
anomai @ Dec 31st 2007 9:47PM
CoD4 showed me how much I really suck at FPS. Problem is, I love FPS games, its all I play. *sigh* Gotta practice! (BTW: I agree with the "game of the year" title for CoD4)
ted @ Dec 31st 2007 10:19PM
Call of Duty, yeah..I am duty bound to kill foreign nationals in their struggle for self determination and....oops...any number of innocent bystanders!
Don't glorify or justify the military industrial complex and international corporate greed.
Say NO to war-entertainment! You are being trained and brainwashed!
How convenient, the US Army releases a software mega hit-Army of One, followed by Two, you are playing a simulator, the army even has ads where game characters comunicate directly with players, inviting them to take their game to the next level.
I've got nothing against fantasy violence, but check yourself, you are being recruited, and you don't even know it!!
John @ Dec 31st 2007 10:28PM
It's cool that you guys called this one. I didn't enjoy it much, but only because it's war. I have to admit that this game had amazing programming, control, story, etc. I was surprised at how gracefully it moved, yet with such graphical prowess. I am very pleased that this port has been commended so strongly.

First comment of the YEAR!!
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Jan 1st 2008 12:31AM
Uncharted all the way.
No, it's not perfect. Yes, it's a tad short.
But it's beautiful, plays well, has a great story and the style and detail to story and cutscenes and the little things (like it telling you your progress has been saved in the last minute before you go save unnecessarily) really will raise the bar for all AAA games on all platforms.
Maybe I'd feel differently if I liked online shooters more, but for me, it's clearly Uncharted.
Dehshizknight @ Jan 1st 2008 12:40AM
It was probably because I was tired of shooters but Uncharted was just way too good. Game of the year in my opinion, hands down.
Ranus Studios @ Jan 1st 2008 1:09AM
I would have a hard time voting for anything that isn't console-exclusive.
jango fett @ Jan 1st 2008 4:09AM
i havent played this game yet. i wonder what im missing. :( i understand its not ww2 anymore? i dont know its just that first person shooters dont do it for me. their all the same. it seems young males are obsessed with shooting each other in virtual reality.
Popfrogs @ Jan 1st 2008 12:53PM
Well it's the classic game of cowboys 'n indians, tag, hide and seek, etc. all rolled into one. That's the appeal of these games.
jango fett @ Jan 1st 2008 4:11AM
... hehehehehe lolz
Sicknsore @ Jan 1st 2008 4:20AM
Graphically speaking COD4 is great but the single player is too short to my liking and the online multiplayer was great when i first got the game (before the US release date) but now its wasting lots of my time trying to join a game or finding a decent game (full bar signal).. the most ridiculous is there's no option to host your own local game or even choosing a server, to avoid lagging, this makes it unacceptable for an online multiplayer.. i definitely would enjoy the online more when IW released the second patch, which supposedly addressing some issues, hopefully all the problems would be fixed.. and for uncharted, awesome, nuff said..
Rubber Biscuit @ Jan 1st 2008 4:26AM
I am perplexed how in survey after survey Uncharted demolishes all others in popular opinion on the PS3 (landslide victories across the board), yet it rarely wins on these critic lists (I think IGN may have given it GOTY). Baffling how players can be bowled over by a truly unique gameplay experience like Unchartered, but critics are wowed by merely producing a very polished version of a tried and true formula (and a damn short one at that!). I'm not sure that persistent awards in an online shooter is as revolutionary as the reviews make it out to be (seems that a Rainbow Six on the Xbox did that years ago, but I may be wrong); and furthermore, I'm not sure it is as good of an idea as they seem to think it is. Logic says it will whittle down the number of players to those with too much time on their hands and the rest of us will say, "screw it, if I can't have the superior sniper rifle, but the guy who is better than me can, why bother." Seems competitive sports actually do the reverse to create a level playing field (i.e. handicaps in golf).
nobody @ Jan 1st 2008 6:07AM
To me it just seems like IGN was the only who had the right idea when choosing the best game for the ps3.
ryan @ Jan 1st 2008 6:00PM
Overall CoD4 is the best game for your money.
I do give UC the best game award for the PS3 though.
COD4 is great just for the run button alone. i love that run button. haha.
I love paintball and I love COD4. Singleplayer is the best SP experience I've had ever.
Ether02 @ Jan 1st 2008 8:29PM
how can a multiplatform game be playstation game of the year?
:(
sammy @ Jan 2nd 2008 12:18PM
By being considered better than the single format games.
I am not sure I could pick out a FPS as GOTY myself on any format. HL2 maybe a couple of years back. But they have become so stale :/
Unchartered seemed fresh depsite the familiar premise. I think the enviroments were its trump card.
jdanforth @ Jan 2nd 2008 10:02PM
If I were picking a game of the year, cod4 on any platform would be a front runner.
