EGM: Sony working with major third party on remakes
EGM's sometimes-right rumor mongerer, Quartermann, is now claiming that Sony has signed an agreement with a major third party Japanese publisher to create remakes for the PSN. 1UP further fuels the fanboy fire with a rather unhelpful (but exciting) tease that'll get our imaginations rolling:
"As for which publisher this is, the magazine doesn't reveal. Could it be Konami? A remake of Contra or Castlevania could be pretty sweet. Or Capcom? Ghosts & Goblins or Strider please. Or maybe even Square Enix? Chrono Trigger = OMG."
We're pretty certain the EGM team knows exactly what's going on -- but must keep their mouths shut on the specifics. Regardless, things are going to get pretty interesting later this year.

FFVII?
bs6268d @ Jan 4th 2008 9:55PM
maybe a ps2 game wat does zomg stand for?
doc j @ Jan 4th 2008 10:12PM
It's like "omg" - which is an acronym for "oh my god"
In netspeak a "z" is occasionally added to the beginning to show extra excitement. This supposedly started out of the website 4chan.org when someone accidentally hit the "z" key instead of the shift key. In short, the z doesn't stand for anything.

I really am looking forward to learning what this is all about.
Regardless of developer it is a positive step for the PSN. We need more games, updates of quality titles and more third party content.
I have longed for the appearance of games such as 'Secret of Mana' on the network. Maybe it might just emerge one day.
kingofwale @ Jan 4th 2008 10:09PM
I'd pray it's FFVII too but I wouldn't consider Enix a typical 'third party' developer.
Also, being a PSN game, maybe it's smaller in size?
Please tell me it's NOT Tetris. :(
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 4th 2008 11:48PM
Why not? I think Tetris is fun. :(

Chrono Trigger was awesome. That and KOTOR are the only RPGs I have ever really liked, and I regret that my SNES died when I was only a few hours into it. It had innovative gameplay and a good story (at least, what I saw of it,) and I would be first in line to buy a remake.

looks like your 2nd prediction is almost realized .. you guys should have back up predictions because your running out fast ;).
doc j @ Jan 4th 2008 11:21PM
I'm not getting overly excited. I promise. But I really want this to be Chrono Trigger ... even more than I want it to be FFVII. Although, really, somehow Chrono Trigger has aged better than FFVII.
I would imagine it's going to be something else. Anything listed in the original post sounds excellent.

Konami - Contra, Gradius remixes SWEETE!@!!!
Organic_Shadow @ Jan 5th 2008 12:08AM
As long as Sony finds ways to use the PSN to do all kinds of awesome stuff, that's all I really care about.
-DLC
-Minigames
-Remakes
-Expansion Packs
-Full 'FULL' titles
-Eye games
-PS1 games
-PS2 games(plskthxbai?)
-???
-??????
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 5th 2008 2:02AM
I agree that PS2 games would be great, but it may also present a problem. For one, emulation. The 40 GB model can't play any PS2 games at all, so unless it's completely redone, a la Super Puzzle Fighter, someone may buy it and be unable to do anything with it. Also, space. Some people complain that you have to install 5 GB of data to start playing DMC4, but keep in mind that most PS2 games would be about that much, with the later titles being even twice as much. The PS3 models didn't come standard with enough storage to make this realistic and forcing everyone to upgrade would be seen as a bad move.

Dude!!! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
Joe @ Jan 5th 2008 12:30AM
I would so like to see this be Chrono Trigger and FFVII can be a full blown PS3 game.
Shon S. @ Jan 5th 2008 1:17AM
absolutely agree

I'm going out on a limb and saying its Battletoads.

JOYGASM!
Zack @ Jan 5th 2008 1:52AM
I'd love some great RPG remakes, but I bet it's just updates to classic arcade titles like Bubble Bobble or something. :/
Zack @ Jan 5th 2008 2:00AM
I'd love to have an update to an RPG game from the early 90's, but I'd say that, unfortunately, we're probably in for an update from an arcade classic like Bubble Bobble or Bomberman, unfortunately. =[
Jling84 @ Jan 5th 2008 3:36AM
Please oh please let it be Square-Enix.
jango fett @ Jan 5th 2008 3:43AM
who cares, hd dvd is dead!
Autopsy15 @ Jan 5th 2008 4:43AM
How is this related?...At all?
Musouka @ Jan 5th 2008 4:04AM
I wouldn't hold my breath. If they would remake some awesome game, they'd mention its title. Remember Capcom's statement "PS3 owners will get something groundbreaking from us, just wait a week for us to unveil it... tada a remake of LostPlanet".
PSN games are 1-2GB, so FFVII is out of the question. Chrono will also barely fit. Something much more simple, where there were few graphics and mostly gameplay - that's what I'm betting on. A puzzle-game or some old simple JRPG/strategy game from the NES age.
Anyway, I'm from that half of the world, where you can't buy stuff from PSN, so what do I care... *sob*.
Autopsy15 @ Jan 5th 2008 4:47AM
Excuse me but, WTF was so great about Chrono Trigger?
Deathvein @ Jan 5th 2008 8:14AM
Capcom. Resident Evil 2.
PLEASE!
2d manchild @ Jan 5th 2008 10:36AM
@Autopsy15
Everything!!! Story, Music, Characters, Battlesystem, etc, etc
They don't make rpgs like that anymore. Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 2(SOM) Super Mario Rpg (there's more, but i'm not going to list them all) are some the best SNES rpgs ever crafted.
Those were the days. (yes i'm old) Now everything is a graphicsfest.
doom saber @ Jan 5th 2008 10:57AM
Hopefully, it isn't another Street Fighter game since we are getting an HD remake from Capcom. I am thinkin it would be an arcade game like Gradius or Contra rather than a game that takes a long time to pass like Final Fantasy.
I would be suprised if Snk did their own HD remake fighting game like Samurai Showdown or King of Fighters.
Lastly, the Konami code is actually:
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A
Zack @ Jan 5th 2008 11:04AM
I would love to see a remake of an old-school RPG as much as the other guy (especially Xenogears or Chrono Trigger), but I seriously doubt that will be happening, unfortunately. I bet we will instead be seeing updates on old classic arcade titles such as Bomberman or Bubble Bobble. That seems the most practical. =[
Ryan @ Jan 5th 2008 1:00PM
I wouldn't want FFVII on PSN if it was a full blown remake, However, I think they should put the original FFVII, VIII, and IX to PSN, and call it "Final Fantasy #-HD"
So, you'd get a Final Fantasy VII-HD which would be the same game, in a higher resolution, with more cleanly rendered high resolution prerendered movies and backgrounds.
That would print money money faster than a redesigned DS Lite.

It will have to be someone fairly worthwhile. I am not sure why everyone seems to be thinking in context of just one game as it a deal with a company and not single title.
If it proves popular I cannot see anything but other companies following suit.
Just please don't be Namco :/...what about Sega with Dreamcast and Saturn titles?
I think the operative word is 'remake' though. Anything that comes out will be improved and one would imagine it is something worth improving to be so.
PS: why would Chronotrigger not fit? it is a tiny game in terms of memory. Surely even something like Chrono Cross could be compressed now.

I can think of some PS1 games that I'd like to see remade, since I can't seem to get a PS1 memory card to work on my PS2.
epp1e @ Jan 6th 2008 9:10AM
Well, this showed up today:
http://news.filefront.com/street-fighter-alpha-headed-to-sony-ps3/
Would be interesting if it's Capcom, and these remakes are some of the fighting games people have wanted for quite some time. MvC2 would make my day (if they can work something out with EA, since they hold the rights to releasing Marvel games)
