CES: GPS peripheral coming soon to the US
The Consumer Electronics Show has been big for the PSP. Sony officially revealed plans for Skype on the PSP. Now, they've shown off GPS navigation for use with the PSP. The peripheral has been readily available in Japan for quite some time now, but this is the first official sign that the US will also receive the device.
The Sony CES website reveals that the peripheral will work with navigation software, provided on UMD. "Your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's, and even downloadable city guides. With an easy search feature feature and customizable settings, GPS on PSP is the easiest way to navigate new areas and new cities."
An official release date and price have yet to be revealed, but we're glad to see it's finally coming. Hey, didn't we predict GPS coming out this year?
[Thanks, kspraydad!]

Haiddasalami @ Jan 6th 2008 10:46PM
same how much did it go for in japan?
Kspraydad @ Jan 6th 2008 11:45PM
The GPS is $60 in Japan
Jast @ Jan 16th 2008 9:13PM
Is there gonna be an update so I can use it on my current psp instead of buying the new one.
Lars @ Jan 7th 2008 8:38PM
Me too.
I just gotta say FINA-FREAKIN-LY!!!
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 6th 2008 10:34PM
I want them to finally bring the Go!Cam to America! When, SCEA? When?!?!
lorddshadow @ Jan 6th 2008 10:48PM
should come any second now with the rate that other things are being announced.
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 6th 2008 10:54PM
Speaking of things that have been announced for America, but still don't have a release date, I still want to know when the DualShock 3 is coming out, because I'm not spending next to $100 for an import.
Hoffer @ Jan 6th 2008 10:59PM
I ordered a dual shock 3 from play-asia for $61(included $5 coupon code) shipped on 12/31. I should be getting it this week.
I figure when it comes to the US, it will be $50. So, I'm paying $10 more to get it now. That is fine with me.
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 6th 2008 11:02PM
@Hoffer
Yeah, that doesn't sound like a bad deal, but I've searched for it on Amazon, to see if you could preorder it, and you can buy the import for ninety-something dollars. No thank you. :P
Kspraydad @ Jan 6th 2008 11:03PM
The DS3 is on the SONY CES site too so it shouldn't be long!
I wish SONY would do like Apple...announce it and its in the store later that day (Sony Stores).
John the Snake Man @ Jan 6th 2008 10:47PM
YES!!!...I wont get lost anymore...FTW!!!
pjak @ Jan 6th 2008 10:48PM
Here is the latest from the EU playstation site about GPS:
Making use of a GPS receiver attachment and a software UMD featuring your chosen maps, Go!Explore offers the very latest in map data and navigation software. Maps and points of interest are upgradeable via downloads, while new maps and guides can be purchased from PLAYSTATION Store (PC).
Nice to hear it will be upgradeable online - just hope it don't cost too much...
NoBullet @ Jan 6th 2008 11:05PM
Why in the hell are they releasing this but not the camera?!
Kspraydad @ Jan 6th 2008 11:42PM
I'm hoping they upgrade the camera to 3mpx...
The 1.2 or whatever doesn't do it for me.
Darren Tilley @ Jan 6th 2008 11:12PM
This one better not turn out to be slim-only too.
Robert @ Jan 6th 2008 11:38PM
Not Slim Only. The Go!Cam works on the Slim and so will the GPS. Skype is Slim only because of the hardware changes, that benefit the Software. I'm waiting an hour, and I bet like someone else said that the Go!Cam will be announced. Hopefully for March or earlier because my birthday is coming up soon!
B1gC72 @ Jan 7th 2008 12:50AM
im not so excited about the Go! Cam like everyone else seems to be since i already a crappy 1.3mp camera on my phone (and it does unlimited videos), why do i need one on my PSP too?
this GPS receiver on the other hand is right up my alley since i was already considering getting a GPS anyway to add to my gadget entourage.
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 7th 2008 1:36AM
I'm excited because I don't have a camera phone, and I don't feel like paying a couple hundred dollars for a phone that does have a camera when I already have a cell phone that works fine as it is. Also, I would hope that, with the camera, there would then be an announcement in the future regarding video chat PS3-to-PSP or vice-versa.
Also, if and when they release the Go!Cam, you don't have to buy it.
Bryan @ Jan 7th 2008 2:53AM
@B1gC72 not everyone is as cool as you.
@linebeginstoblur dont all phones come with camera? i mean tmobile offers free phone like every other day.
either way im down for gps. but if its more than 150 no reason to buy it right? doesnt bestbuy have those for that price.
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 7th 2008 3:33AM
Of course not all phones come with cameras! I bought my phone for about $100 a couple years ago and it has no camera, MP3 playback, or anything hi-tech. I can call, text, or use a couple IM services, and there isn't much else. I can play games, but everything runs too slowly. You know, not everyone has cool, expensive phones. Also, you can get "free" phones, but you'll have to sign onto different plans, and since I'm tight on money and don't talk too often, I go with prepaid instead of monthly, so I can't just get free phones. Like you said yourself, not everyone is as cool as you. :P
Don @ Jan 7th 2008 3:03AM
I hope the GPS will have Canada maps as well.
Alien @ Jan 7th 2008 8:13AM
Well finally the US gtes some hardware love to :)
The_Fireball @ Jan 7th 2008 8:39AM
Hate to burst your bubble USA boys and Girls, but if you look closely, you'll see that the screen shot is a map of LONDON. You may be waiting even longer for a USA version..... Oh and DS3 is WICKED, i got my two from tokyo. The battery is 10 times bigger (300mA) so if you play non-shock games, you dont need to recharge for bloody ages :-)
borst @ Jan 7th 2008 9:49AM
OH NO its a London map. Who cares? Its on a SCEA website, for an event in the US. I doubt they'd even have it on there if it was EU only
and for those whining about DS3 import prices i got mine for $56 SHIPPED from play-asia with the $10 of $50 coupon.
webdesign @ Jan 7th 2008 9:03AM

borst @ Jan 7th 2008 9:56AM
only reason i wouldn't put off getting a stand-alone gps unit and waitin for this is the lack of a touchscreen on the psp.. would make address entry, etc alot easier.
the ui (if its not just a mock-up) looks pretty cool too.
Kspraydad @ Jan 7th 2008 11:17AM
I'm assuming a 'hard core gps user' (do those exist) would find a dedicated machine better...
But for someone like myself that might travel out of town once or twice a year the low cost (assuming $75) GPS for the PSP is an adequate choice.
Cameron @ Jan 7th 2008 12:40PM
As cool as all these attachments sound… (Especially when showing off to your friends how your PSP is not only a game system, but it can do everything else.) I can't help but wonder about the awkwardness of switching to GPS mode and then to GO cam and then to your basic mp3, vids, internet etc. I really wish there was a way that Sony would integrate the CAM and the GPS hardware inside the actual PSP to prevent the carrying around of a briefcase full of PSP hardware/software accessories.
bryansurvive @ Jan 7th 2008 3:59PM
@linebeginstoslur
im not cool. my first prepaid phone was from 7-11 it came with a camera. it was only 70 bucks. but i talk to much. were both cool along with homie :)
Getting Discouraged @ Jan 7th 2008 11:55PM
Do we know if the GPS will have off road ability for geocaching and a compass/pointer? If not, it will be the final nail in the coffin for me. The only reason I still have it is when I tried to sell on ebay the damn Malaysia scammers kept killing the auctions lol.
kato @ Jan 8th 2008 1:18AM
Isn't this virutally the same gps you can buy from play-asia??

Kspraydad @ Jan 8th 2008 10:03AM
Yes...but now you with get North American mapping with out having to have a hacked PSP.
mayhem_nz @ Jan 8th 2008 6:51AM
Interesting. Looks like this is the gps software for psp.

w00t! I've been looking forward to the go!explore and go!cam! Here's to hoping it's for $60 or less!
SmartCarRules @ Jan 30th 2008 1:26AM
Yea, but how do you attach the psp to the dashboard/windshield ? isnt the old PSP a little heavy for a suck cup mount ?
Also, modern GPS are all touchscreen now. Plus they come with text-to-speech, multi-languages voices, dictionnary, Traffic update.
I'm sure the most important feature Sony need to release is the software. Cuz without a good GPS software, it would make a very poor GPS device.
I just hope it will have multi-language voice and text to speech.
pspfan91 @ Jan 30th 2008 5:54PM
i have a question i'm an owner of the old psp and i wanted to know if should buy the new psp because of this skype thing and i wanted to know since this new psp is out will they be making things that run better on the psp-2000 and not putting it on the old psp ?

I just want to know why Europe gets this before the US.
