UTIII mod cooker finally released to the wild
We've been harping on about this Unreal Tournament III mod "cooker" for a wee while now. For those of you who don't know, this update for the Unreal Editor on PC allows mods to be exported to a PS3-friendly format, allowing any of the current and future PC mod releases to be saved out and used on the PlayStation 3. Epic released a few mods to tide us over while the "cooker" was still being tested. Soon after that, it was released to an undisclosed number of people on the Developer Mailing list, for further testing.
Now, however, it's finally available for everyone to download. From here on out we expect to see a huge amount of user-generated content being released. But not all of it can be good, surely? We're aiming to bring you a round up of our favourite mods every couple of weeks or so. So if you're a mod maker, or if you've stumbled upon a mod you particularly enjoy, let us know at Jem [at] Joystiq.com.

I have to say I am somewhat disappointed. I thought this will allow PS3 users to create mods. instead, you have to buy the PC version to create mods for your ps3 version of UT3. Hopefully the PC UT3 community will be kind enough to think about us console goes, eh?

you dont understand. The editor needs the game on the PC to render the mod. the editor and game works side by side.

I hear what you're saying, but it still sucks that you have to buy two copies of the game to mod it.

Thats exactly what I meant! I hope Epic decide to release UT's modding component to the public to allow PS3 users to create mods. otherwise, its left entirely to the PC community to create mods for us.

It's not possible to release the UnrealEd standalone, because it requires the packages found in the game in order to create content. Releasing these packages free of charge would mean releasing the game free.
It's also impossible to release the editor on the PS3 due to it's limited memory, so you cannot run the editor on the PS3.
The best Epic could do would be to allow some sort of mail in rebate for those who bought the PS3 version and are willing to get the PC version as well. But this isn't an obligation.
So it IS up to the PC modding community to cook the mods for the PS3. However it's a fairly simple process so you should see many mods for PS3 pop up. Heck the tide has even started, check out the utforums. :)
By the way, here's my map, both for PC and PS3:
