I bought my PS3 in November for £349, it was a 60GB version with 2 free games of my choice.
This offer is quite normal actually, or am I going insane?

Man, it must suck to be a gamer in the UK (or I guess Europe?). I just got my used 20GB for 300 *dollars* (~150 pound, I think?), and on Black Friday weekend a local membership warehouse had 40GB's for $300 new. Obviously, I did what I did because the BC was valuable to me, but still...
I mean, I constantly hear that EU prices are more in Euros than they are here in dollars, but it doesn't sink in as much. You guys are excited about a "bargain" price for a 60GB that's more than the consoles were going for here on Ebay the month after launch!

The recommended retail price of the 40GB model is 479 EUR here in Finland, which is something like 700 USD with the current exchange rate. The cheapest price I've seen is 399 EUR, but those were German imports which luckily is really not a problem because the warranty is still valid here.

Well I've been mulling over a PS3 for months now (I'm an Xbot and don't really find that much compelling on the PS3 bar the blu-ray) but the discontinuation of the 60gb version rather than just lowering its price really irked me.However, it looks like play.com have temporarily fixed both issues. I'm not missing an opportunity like this...so... *yoink*
And if I don't like it, I can sell at a profit on ebay!

I finally got my 60GB PAL PS3 4 months ago, when the price dropped to $770 here (385 GBP) down from $920 (600 Euro) AND there were first signs of the 60GB version going extinct.
I still wonder how PS3 would fare if its price in Europe was only $600, something that people from the third-world-country "USA" balk at. It would have been an instant grab for me in March if it was $600. And how would games fare for $60 instead of $100?
Why do you think Europe gets everything so expensive? Import-taxes this high? 66% tax, for Christ's sake.
Phil @ Jan 11th 2008 9:03AM
Well here's hoping Play.com actually had them in stock when I ordered mine, because they sure as hell don't any more!
Jay @ Jan 12th 2008 10:57AM
They sold out in a matter of hours, which suggests there are people out there who want a PS3 but will NOT buy a 40GB machine.........
Sony take note; it's worrying.
