Toshiba, further curious about the Cell, puts it in a laptop

Imagine footage from a mobile phone or camera getting processed heavily from their crappy resolution into 1080p -- this laptop can do it and from the demonstrations, it doesn't look that bad at all. It's not going to look like it's 1080p, but it won't be blocky and horrid to look at. YouTube lowered our standards, after all. We'd talk more about it, but there's a video of the demonstration available -- check it out and get ready to wish for another electronic device to utilize the Cell Processor.

are these the same cell processors like in the ps3 or "better/faster" ones?
JerJerBinks @ Jan 12th 2008 3:14PM
From TFA:
"The system was demonstrated in modified Qosmio G45 laptops, each of which uses a standard Intel Core 2 Duo CPU in addition to a Cell chip with four 1.5GHz synergistic processing elements (SPEs). For reference, the PS3 has eight SPEs running at 3GHz, making it approximately 75 per cent quicker."
Its not like you would have had to read more than 5 sentences to get that information. Seriously, it was in the second paragraph. Lrn2read

JerJer...
Don't get all technical...are they the same or not?
:)
Richie @ Jan 12th 2008 3:42PM
well there is nothing about the cell chip :P and i didnt check'd the links
JerJerBinks @ Jan 12th 2008 3:26PM
K, simply it is not the same processor as the PS3 Cell. The PPE and SPE are clocked at 1.5 GHz, and there are 1/2 as many SPEs. This was probably done to limit the amount of power consumption being as it is currently deployed in a mobile computer.

Sorry, that was supposed to be a reply.

I was being obtuse.

how about a toaster with a cell processor in it
Leo @ Jan 13th 2008 2:02AM
Success!

That face "morphing" demo at the end of the vid was 100 times more impressive than the pre-processed fake 1080p they kept banging on about for most of it.

It's somewhat ironic that Sony and Toshiba could work together on the Cell processor (along with IBM), yet be fierce rivals in the HD optical media market (HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray).
Wayne @ Jan 12th 2008 5:12PM
I also find that interesting. They are such large companies that one division could want to kill all Sony staff and the other division could love them.

they should try to put cell processors in someones brain to make them think faster and all that. imagine society actually becoming smarter and intelligent as time goes by.
cptnapalm @ Jan 15th 2008 3:27PM
no, people would just be stupider several times faster
MeLindi @ Feb 6th 2008 10:24PM
Actually our brains are probably faster.

are brain is way faster and does more tasks then a computer can do!!!!! they need to stick a brain in a computer instead....
