Sweet,.
Nate @ Jan 14th 2008 3:59PM
Is it going to work at 1920x1080 over 100 megabit ethernet? That's what I want to know (not that my PC can run Crysis at that resolution, mind you... but other games, definitely)
B1gC72 @ Jan 15th 2008 2:07AM
i tipped this to Joystiq earlier (and of course they didnt post it with their damn 360 bias...) but anyway, the story i saw had it being able to support up to 3200 x 2400.
here's the link if you wanna check it out for yourself.

Dehshizknight @ Jan 14th 2008 4:18PM
This is pretty freakin' cool!
I'm hoping for someone to be able to make a Linux program that allows you to put a PC game directly into your PS3 and let you emulate it with no chugging in Linux. That would be cool!
Popfrogs @ Jan 14th 2008 4:46PM
Emulation on the PS3, particularly 3d apps, will be crippled forever unless Sony allows access to the Nvidia chip. The hypervisor prevents this now, and for the forseeable future. There's a decent linux app from Transgaming that allows you to install and play tons of Windows games in Linux...so if 2 impossible things happen (transgaming tech ported to powerpc branch which the PS3 uses and the hypervisor allowing hardware access to the RSX chip) then we'll be good to go.
In summary, don't hold your breath.
Otsego_Undead @ Jan 14th 2008 4:20PM
THE CAKE IS A LIE!

Do you visit thefeed, because you said the same thing as
a poster named kiohto?
Dreadhead541 @ Jan 14th 2008 6:16PM
Marc, that's a line from portal
James @ Jan 14th 2008 4:46PM
Hrm, I'm a bit skeptical -- how is this magically so much better than, say, VNC? I mean, I've tried (and failed!) to play games over VNC using my wired (100 Mbit) home network, so I'd be interested to know how these guys do it.
Andy @ Jan 14th 2008 7:56PM
I believe this is using streaming video, like wmv or something, and I think vnc simply uses updating images instead of streaming video, suck as a new jpg a few times a second. Using streaming video, you can get a lot of more images per second than vnc, so a lot less lag.
Popfrogs @ Jan 15th 2008 7:21PM
Technically it's kinda streaming video. Without reading the article I'd guess it's the X video server outputting to a remote terminal, which is very, very fast.
Chris @ Jan 14th 2008 4:32PM
So would it be possible to play World Of Warcraft on your PS3?
Dan @ Jan 14th 2008 4:34PM
Too bad you can just get a cable from your computer to your tv... especially if its an HDTV (DVI -> HDMI: $5 online) linux not required, lag an afterthought.
Nate @ Jan 14th 2008 4:42PM
Only works if your TV is near your computer, which mine's not. Also only works if you want to switch cables when you play at your desk (a pain) or get a switcher (expensive).
Of course, this one requires that you install linux on your PS3 and boot to that... so there's still a significant amount of hassle if you've just gotten done playing a PS3 game.
tr4nc3 @ Jan 14th 2008 7:01PM
^ You don't need to switch cable, nor a switch. Besides switches aren't expensive, you can grab one at monoprice for $15 or so. I have my desktop and PS3 connected to my 40" Sony Bravia by HDMI and DVI. You could also get a DVI-HDMI cable for $6, once again on the aforementioned site. Why waste electricity using both the computer and PS3 on at the same time.
klexam @ Jan 14th 2008 4:53PM
Good grief! Who wants to go through all that ... save someone with way too much time on their hands? I agree with earlier post about just getting a cable that runs your PC to the TV. Saves so much time and will give you a better picture since it doesn't have to be streamed. But, I will give them props for coming up with something cool people can do with their PS3. While your playing Crysis I'll be playing COD4 and UT3. Later.
Easo @ Jan 14th 2008 4:58PM
They had me hooked until he said keyboad and mouse. Id rather use a controller on the couch than have a kb and mouse in my lap.
Maci @ Jan 14th 2008 9:39PM
I'm sure theres a way to hook up your PS3 remote to your PC.
halebound00 @ Jan 14th 2008 4:59PM
I am gonna get this right now and see if it works. If it does, I am gonna order a couple of pizzas, have all of my buds over tonite and crack up watching my 360fanboy friends shit their pants as I play Bioshock on my PS3 (what will they say then, eh?). Then, screw it, I might even do Gears and then Crisis for sure. I am with #6 though, a program that would just let us put a CPU game in the PS3 would be double D's. Sony should get on that right after we get in game XMB, it would target a whole new demographic.
ayarti @ Jan 14th 2008 5:04PM
excuse me for my ignorance, but is the ps3 emulating the game or is it simply streaming what is being run off the pc onto the tv?
Haiddasalami @ Jan 14th 2008 9:16PM
Its streaming it. Really its all good but only works if you have a good comp and if you have a good comp you can easily play on it. Though this is an awesome way for people who are lazy (like me) and dont want to drag their computer down to hook up to a tv and play.
Burny @ Jan 14th 2008 5:08PM
if it emulated it from the ps3 then that means that you can play with the graphics of the ps3, not the pc, but I kind of doubt it.
wonway01 @ Jan 14th 2008 5:36PM
It doesnt emulate anything. Its just streaming video through the PS3 it seems so you can take advantage of your TV and probably sound system.
ryan @ Jan 14th 2008 6:07PM
at first I was like ZOMG i's can Has Crysis on mine PS3?? this is stupid.
what a complex way to simply attach a cable from your PC to your TV! absurd waste of time.
wonway01 @ Jan 14th 2008 6:16PM
It could help people like me that can not hook their Tv to their computer. I don't have anything but VGA on my computer. :(
ryan @ Jan 14th 2008 7:34PM
adapters for the cable are available dude.
Abscissa @ Jan 15th 2008 6:21AM
Not unless your TV supports analog DVI, dude.
Saffie @ Jan 14th 2008 6:41PM
So... you still have to have a very good computer to stream Crysis to your PS3... hmmm... screw that!
Maci @ Jan 15th 2008 2:06AM
If your computer can run Crysis well than it can stream it too.
VegginCruz @ Jan 14th 2008 7:14PM
lol i emailed andrew yesterday about this argh owell still i cant wait to see if some1 will get halo running on their ps3 haha
Organic_Shadow @ Jan 14th 2008 7:51PM
Sucks you have to have linux installed. I'm too afraid of my hard drive running into problems or losing too much space with the partitioning that needs to be done.
wonway01 @ Jan 14th 2008 8:03PM
VGA is analog and HDMI is digital, the converter for that is more then a new video card. There is no adapter from vga to HDMI like DVI to HDMI
Darkdrium777 @ Jan 14th 2008 9:05PM
It's no use. Playing Crysis streamed on a PS3 won't make it play without lag. That's impossible.
Still, this is quite a technical prowess. Bravo :)
Darko @ Jan 14th 2008 11:44PM
wow, lame... you have to have your pc connected to the internet to play your games (for authentication purposes, i.e. to make sure that some how you haven't stolen the better version of streammygame)... the free version only outputs at 1024x768... hmmm maybe if i set up a proxy server and some how fake the authentication process.... Eh screw it, ill just play my games on my media center pc ... it plays 90% of my games already at 720p and 1080p.
whoiscraig @ Jan 14th 2008 11:50PM
I can't believe how people fail to see why this is cool. Even if you aren't interested in keeping your computer in your office, like some of us with sanity, you should at least realize how cool this is. Yea, I can plug my computer into my TV and get better results, but isn't that 10x less interesting? Props where props are due. This is the first step.
Ty @ Jan 18th 2008 7:51PM
So you can turn your PS3 into a media hub for a TV in your house... I guess its news. Enjoy your games on your PS3 when you could be playing them on your PC. (If you really laud over this convienience you're too rich for your own good)
ck @ Jan 15th 2008 5:04AM
Far too much dicking about & too much choppy gameplay, and some lovely big black borders.
I also like the way he goes into excruciatingly minute detail about how to sudo and run a shell script i.e., "The Basics" but then just leaves you to figure out your own linux firewall, as you obviously know all about that.
GG that man.
setarcosp @ Jan 15th 2008 5:53AM
wont a 3rd party os invalidate your ps3's waranty?
Darko @ Jan 15th 2008 8:00AM
No. Sony gives you the option to install a secondary os without "hacking/modding" it.
setarcosp @ Jan 15th 2008 8:10AM
ahh cool sorry for my ignorance
Dazza15 @ Jan 15th 2008 2:20PM
do u still need a good specd pc
Darko @ Jan 15th 2008 8:16PM
Yes, you need a computer powerful enough to play the game you want to play and transmit a video feed of the game. From their site:
Minimum for low resolution Streaming
1.5GHz CPU
1GB RAM
DirectX9 graphics card
AGP bus
Recommended for 800x600 resolution Streaming
2GHz CPU
1GB RAM
DirectX9 graphics card
PCIE Bus
Recommend for Hi Resolution Streaming
Darko @ Jan 15th 2008 8:17PM
For some reason it cut the rest of my comment off...
Recommend for Hi Resolution Streaming
2GHz CPU Preferably a Dual or Quad core Processor
2GB RAM
DirectX9 or DirectX10 graphics card
PCIE Bus
bamf @ Jan 16th 2008 8:45AM
So can you stream this from your pc at home on a mates PS3 at his home down the street?
Darko @ Jan 16th 2008 7:58PM
Natively... no
If you both have ridiculous download/upload speeds like around 1.5 Megabytes/second (not megabits... big difference) and you VPN'd into his network you might be able to... but no guarantees. The biggest bottle neck here is the host computers upload speed... even if you get 1.5 megabytes down you probably only get 0.125 up if you are lucky. You would be better off bringing your computer over to his house.
1.5 Megabytes down = 12 Megabits down
.125 Megabytes = 1 Megabit = 128 Kilobytes
Long story short ... maybe, if you crank the resolution down pretty damn low.
Bill Gates @ Jan 16th 2008 2:42PM
I think this is a terrific idea.
I like to play games at my couch, but I prefer to work at my desk. I actually have a very nice desk setup with a solid PC, and I have a lot of great PC games, but I'd much rather play on my PS3.
Rather than get a clunky cable from my PC all the way over to my living room (even if I had dvi on my PC, which I don't), I would much rather use the same streaming I use to get movies to my PS3 from my PC.
Super smart idea. I can also play my thousands of MAME and NES roms on my PS3 now.
My 360 has better games (though it won't by the end of the year), but the PS3 blows it out of the water for having so much fun functionality.
Oh, and to the guy who doesn't like using keyboards, just use a usb controller (if you have an adaptor for PS2 controller to the PS3, use that).
bamf @ Jan 17th 2008 1:19PM
@darko
So streaming at home is done through your own wireless network and not via the internet?
