Ted Price talks, teases Resistance 2
No one is surprised by the announcement of Resistance 2. As the PS3's best selling game, it was simply inevitable. This new interview with Insomniac's Ted Price reveals the team's new direction for the game. Unfortunately, there isn't new footage of the game in action, but he does talk about their focus on networking and what players can experience from a team that's much more experienced on the hardware. Bosses over 100 feet tall are promised. WWII meets Shadow of the Colossus meets aliens. What's not to love?
[Thanks, Chris!]

Insomnia is pretty good at NOT delaying games, so let's pray this will come out late this year. Christmas maybe?
speaking of Shadow of the Colossus, where are the two games team ICO is working on? Man, I'm dying for those.
Afro_Dude @ Jan 17th 2008 8:53AM
I'm most excited about the 8 player co-op mode. I hope that they are really going to play up the teamplaying element, where 8 people can work together to solve puzzles, fight bosses & bring down armies of creatures!
Brodie-san @ Jan 17th 2008 8:53AM
I'm just getting into R:FOM now after picking it up at Christmas. It's definitely an impressive launch title but I don't think it's the "killer app" some people were lauding it when it came out.
Considering the team have now had time to get to know the hardware better I have high hopes for this sequel. I wonder how it will compare with Killzone 2 as they are similar IPs.
Kramer @ Jan 17th 2008 8:57AM
Haha "Best selling PS3 game...".
1. There was nothing else to buy when PS3 came out
2. It was bundled with PS3 in many countries
What's with all that praise? Game is high quality but overall is just above average.
With Killzone, Haze and alike coming out, I doubt sales of Resistance 2 will reach even 50% of Resistance 1
Akamaru @ Jan 17th 2008 9:26AM
There is no denying that Resistance is the best selling PS3 game. It sold over 2 million copies and no other PS3 game has done that. It's simple math really.
I always though Resistance was way underrated as it got everything right. It may not have been groundbreaking but it was damn fun.
Kattleox @ Jan 17th 2008 9:27AM
I see your point, but Killzone is probably just going to be pretty and I doubt that Haze will be very good. Not everyone liked Killzone, any way, so I think R2 might do well. Not Halo well, but definitely better than haze.
Kspraydad @ Jan 17th 2008 9:07AM
@Kramer
Have you played Killzone or Haze.
No.
With R2 we KNOW something about the quality of the developer and their ability to produce, in your words' an above average game at launch.
'Giving away' R1 was brilliant by SONY. It has now built a base of 2 million + players that will likely give R2 more than a passing consideration for purchase.
Haze, being overly delayed and from Ubisoft (thus multiplatform) will not sell nearly as well IMO. K2 has alot of hype to live up to and a developer that hasn't shown that they can deal with PS3.
All in all it is Insomniac that is better positioned to exceed expectations and with the greater install base I expect R2 to surpass R1 in sales without having to be bundled.

Personally I think RFoM 2 will come out on top of KZ2 and especially Haze. Killzone 2 might be great, but considering the first one wasn't all that, I'll be pleasantly surprised if the sequel meets and exceeds the expectations. And can someone please tell me what they see that is so special about Haze?? In my eyes it looks sooo mediocre!Anyways, RFoM was as great as I think a launch title can be, and considering Insomniac now has lots of experience developing for the PS3, I don't think they can go wrong with the sequel. Their games are consistently amazing, and if they can deliver on the epic feel of that Game Informer cover (with the huuuge spaceship in the background), another engaging story, and great co-op and mp capabilities, this will surely be a triple A title! :D

The guy who said resistance 2 would not do well is on Crack! COD4 has finally stopped me from playing the game. I can't wait! Insomniac is considered one of the best companies to work for.
Games I played since Resistance and still went to resistance. P.S. I owe a PS3, 360, AND wii
Halo 3
Bioshock-=---if it had multiplayer it may have kept me.
the darkness
fear
timeshift
Hands down resistance IS better to ME. Now call of duty 4 has me by the nads.

Resistance 2 is going to be awesome and it’s even better that the developers are looking to break standards and bring new elements to the genre. I usually don’t rant on these forums, but…
Halo 3 this, Halo 3 that. Every time a shooter is mentioned for the PS3 it's compared to Halo. Halo has been the Xbox's flagship shooter for years. MS didn’t have many shooters to rely on so they invested a lot of resources into the Halo name. The PS3 has no flagship shooter and Sony doesn’t advertise their games nearly as much or as well as MS. MS has spent millions of dollars advertising Halo. It spent more than 10 million promoting Halo 3 alone. You saw Halo 3 in every paper, game Website, televised news spots, and tech column in the U.S. for months; with that much money spent in advertising it better sell as well as it did.
I've played all three Halo games on several occasions. Halo 3 is a decent game, but it comes up short in many areas that Halo fans love to ignore. It doesn't do ANYTHING the previous Halos haven't done. You have basically the same vehicle fights, same gun fights, heck almost every weapon in Halo 3 was in Halo 2, the game looks decent, but isn't even done in HD.
Truth be told Halo 3 is no match for CoD4, which many agree is the best shooter currently on any console. I would rather see PS3 shooters compared to CoD4 than Halo. You can convince people to buy a rock if you pour enough money and time to promote it. I'm not saying Halo 3 isn't good. It's just not good enough to compare to upcoming PS3 shooters.
For those who want to religiously defend Halo 3 as if it was the second coming, remember that it didn't win GOTY from popular sites, CoD4 did and it didn’t need 10 million dollars in promotions to sell as well as it did.
Advertising sells and if more game companies shoved 10 million + in advertising down player’s throats they would break sales records too.

RFOM2 will do great based on it being a sequel to a great game alone. That and the install base of PS3 users will be higher. ALSO, I would say that the majority of current PS3 owners have RFOM already, so they have incentive to go out and try the sequel.
This is a trusted developer that is notorious for good quality, great support, innovation, and being on time, so there's not much holding it back. If anything I think Killzone and Haze have a disadvantage, as many people haven't even heard of either title. If you got a PS3 and RFOM, and don't pay attention to game news and such, then see RFOM2 out, you'll probably want to go try it, whereas these new Killzone and Haze games you know nothing about.
My predictions:
-Killzone: ~9 or so rating- gloriously makes up for the PS2 Killzone but lacks in certain areas. People will whine about underdelivering but will be such a great game that it shouldn't matter.
-Haze: ~8 or so rating- great graphics, cool concept with nectar etc. but AI will be a downer, and the overall gameplay won't do much that current shooters aren't.
-RFOM2: 9.5-10 rating- great graphics, builds and improves upon the already great RFOM gameplay and story, multiplayer and co-op modes blow the original game out of the water, and overall are a shining example of how to do a great sequel.
Joe @ Jan 17th 2008 12:15PM
I think KZ2 will be delayed until March or at least come out then in the US seeing as KZ2 is made by a company in Europe. So I could see that game come out in November for people over there and R2 comes out in November for NA.
Also the KZ game on the PSP really was great and got some nines and that was on the PSP. So I think there is a good chance the PS3 version will also be able to get nines.
seedaripper1973 @ Jan 17th 2008 12:26PM
please, please, please just shut up about the original killzone!! it was a really good game..(granted NOT the halo beater everyone of the pundits was making out) but it had solid gameplay, great graphics(for PS2 at the time) and have you ever played it online with your PS2's??? i still go back every so often, its was that good...cooking a grenade as a bunch of ISA/helghast ran past in a group is one of my all time online delights!
so...enough already...i got liberation on the PSP and that was excellent too!! (ive got some faith in guerilla)
and with regards to HAZE...you do realise its being developed by free radical yes??? you know those guys behind the consitently excellent timesplitters series as well as underlooked gem second sight??? (not to mention a lot of the team worked on goldeneye!)
dont count either of these two out yet....
personally i loved the first resistance..great graphics (the textures up close to the aliens were mint back then) great absorbing story, and great online...i have high hopes for this sequel!!!
in all fairness its gonna be a great year for ps3 FPS fans...im gonna get ALL 3!!! see you online boys!!!
*smirks to oneself re-iterating that, that was spoken via a true psfanboy)

Please, i don't want to hear anymore about Halo or Bioshock. Both of those games are highly overrated. Plus, i agree w/ some guy on here who said Killzone 1 was a good game, because it was. Every weapon on Killzone 1 was great, plus the presentation and the action was intense. It had some technical issues, but that didn't stop the game from being fun. Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and Haze are all guaranteed to be great with no exceptions and all 3 are exclusive to PS3, so Sony wins and PS3 fans win. There's no reason to compare the 3, because their all different.
ryan @ Jan 17th 2008 1:37PM
does resistance 1 have a run button? i only play CoD4 on the 360 (better shooter controller IMO), but the run button alone just...feels right, also melee on the right stick is much better than mapping it to a button.
also does resistance play more like COD4, Halo or Unreal 3?
B1gC72 @ Jan 17th 2008 3:00PM
yes, Resistances has run mapped to a flick of the L2 trigger while holding it crouches.
and out of those 3, i would probably say it plays more like Halo in the sense that they are typical alien shooters with a similar combat pace.
i do like CoD4's control scheme with the melee mapped to R3 but it really takes some getting used to since im so used to it being a face button. CoD4 is one of the best shooters ive played Multiplayer wise. ive played the UT3 and Halo 3 also with UT3 being a little too hectic for my liking and Halo 3 doesnt really do anything that Halo 2 didnt do.
Musouka @ Jan 17th 2008 3:07PM
In R1's multiplayer, the "Run" button is very important and extremely balanced. When you play as a marine, you cannot shoot while running (on first shot you stop running, and it takes half a second to restore your aim's precision). When you play as a Chimera (the aliens), you can shoot while you run, but you overheat after ~7 seconds, and if you continue running (being in "rage mode"), your health gradually decreases. And while overheating, if somebody uses a flamethrower or flame-grenades, you take much more damage. But also in "rage mode" you can see all nearby enemies through walls. (this brings many funny moments and strategies when your opponent can see you, too).
Resistance shares some gameplay details with COD4, Haze and UT3, but overall it's a rather unique experience. Tagging enemies (for homing bullets), shooting through walls, restoring health (a detail taken from Halo), energy-shield (a detail Halo3 took), 3 types of grenades, a rocket that you can pause mid-air and re-aim or auto-fire in all directions, making your player remove tags/fire/electric-charge off him by shaking the controller, ....
It really makes all other FPS look identical and old, imho.
Eddie @ Jan 17th 2008 1:45PM
hmmm.. no longer available?
kentuckyfried @ Jan 17th 2008 3:51PM
I hope that R2 or some other shooter incorporates more methods as to avoiding getting shot (e.g. COD4). lol. It might make it a bit cartoonish, but as long as they don't go overboard it'll be OK. Also, a shooter that takes into account where a player is being hit (shooting a foot or an exposed shoulder shouldn't lead to death).
B1gC72 @ Jan 17th 2008 3:31PM
i love Insomniac games. Spryo, Ratchet & Clank, and now Resistance. they havent disappointed me yet so i dont expect them to start now. IMHO, Resistance was a GREAT game, and i say that because it was a launch title and it is still fun to me even though ive already beaten it multiple times. and that makes an amazing game for me since normally when i beat a game i just throw it to the side and pick up the next one with no desire to ever play it again. i guess i kind of treat my games like prostitutes actually, i pay for their entertainment services and dismiss them when im done, but Resistance is the hoe i fell in love with. (and just for the record, i dont pay for sex, just an analogy lol)
thats why i think Resistance 2 is only going to even greater. they have set their goals high, but given their track record, i cant expect them to not achieve them. all the stuff they mentioned is already plausible but its just stuff that we dont see regularly on consoles. it could be the game that brings consoles FPS closer to the standards set by PC FPS.
this should be a nice addition to the PS3's growing list of (possibly) great shooters. Resistance WILL be good since Insomniac is making it. Killzone 2 should be good since Guerrilla has done better in recent years. people always seem to forget that they made the PSP game, Killzone Liberation which got great scores, and just compare it to the first game they made, which i dont really think is fair. and Haze has an All-Star developers cast in Free Radical. i dont think that it will be as good as the other 2 will be but it will still be a good and different game.
PS3 is in a great position right now.
ryan @ Jan 17th 2008 4:04PM
dang, thanks for the info you guy's about Resistance! it really does look like the PS3 has some great shooters coming out, but i still can't get into playing a shooter with the PS3 controller.
is there any 360 controller adapters out there?

The latest Insomniac podcast clarifies a fair bit about what will be the multi-player component in Resistance 2 - Listen to it here :

They do discuss other non R2 things and interview some guys from NeoGaf who also happen to have worked on Halo. All round a good show.
Note : it is now a M rated show, so expect some swearing/cussing.
