THQ officially announces Frontlines cancellation
First, there were murmurs. Then, there were rumors. Now, it has become truth. Today, publisher THQ has confirmed the PS3 version of Frontlines has been canceled, making it a late in the game Xbox 360 console exclusive. "In October, we announced certain product quality initiatives, including personnel and structural changes in product development and a more rigorous internal and external product evaluation and feedback process," said Brian Farrell, president and CEO of THQ. "Consistent with these initiatives, we have taken actions to strengthen our pipeline and position ourselves to compete aggressively with compelling, high quality games." Apparently, that means getting rid of PS3 games.
Kaos Studios also responded on their forums. "THQ has made the decision to cancel the PS3 version of Frontlines. We looked at a number of ways to keep this version of the game alive but in the end, we just couldn't make it happen ... I'm sorry I couldn't give you an update until now but until the final decision and announcement was made by THQ, there was nothing official to say. We did try and find a way to work things out but, at least for this version of Frontlines, it wasn't possible."
Looks like today's not a very good news day for PS3 FPS fans, huh?

Uh... does anyone actually care about this game or about any game from THQ for that matter? Personally I couldn't care less about THQ or its games.
OLDMIKE @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:06PM
did not care about this at all to many FPS as is
there is no need for more than 5 MAX FPS
Relativ @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:26PM
hmm to bad, this game wasn't really on my radar but any game lost is still a game lost.
ryan @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:07PM
eh, actually i don't think FPS fans of any ilk really care. everyones too busy with Halo 3, COD 4 and Unreal 3 to really care. it's not like the PS3 is gonna be missing this with Killzone 2 and MGS4 coming out.
also, the demo on 360 really wasn't very engaging so I wouldn't call this a plus for 360 exclusivity---more like another log on the Shooter fire.
bigd7387 @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:08PM
I feel sorry for people with only one console either 360 or PS3, so at least I can play the 360 version. I know it's not over yet but I think as for this generation it's going to the box. Next PS3 should be made as simple to program for as a Playschool computer, MS is only winning big because they put their money in making an easy to use design language vs' whatever the hell PS3 uses.
Solace @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:11PM
the PS2 was the hardest to program for of the last generation.
how'd that end up working out?
seriously, if you want PlaySchool games, go buy a Wii.
don't you have a bridge to hang out under and goats to eat?
ninxf @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:34PM
Don't feel sorry for me. Everything I want in a console is on the PS3.
Ruben @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:19PM
"or whatever the hell PS3 uses"
wow sounds like you know what your talking about.
wocyob @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:21PM
yea please dont feel sorry for me also...i think alot of us ps3 fans feel sorry for those with the xbox and its 33% fail rate and all the other lame problems that system has...and any great selling xbox game will prob end up on the pc....so i see no point in buying a xbox when i can get the game with out wasting money on something that will fail right out of the box...so i feel sorry for you for that ticking time bomb
xdamage @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:12PM
Couldn't care less. Hadn't even heard about this title until the cancellation rumours began surfacing. I'm confident Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 will own any 360 exclusive they can churn out this year anyways. :D
DrunkRaba @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:18PM
being out a year sooner and having an iteration from each of its "big Player" games, ie Halo, PGR, Forza etc, really helpps too. None of the many big franchises of Playstation have even made an appearance except for Gran Turismo in demo only form. No Playstation 3 Heavy hitters still and the other box has blown part of its wad already.
Solace @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:00PM
guess you've never heard of Ratchet & Clank, Warhawk, Devil May Cry, Burnout, etc. before, have you?
so to you, it's better to re-tread franchises than come up with original IPs? (Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Resistance)
idiot.
heavenlysword @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:12PM
Don't you think that all depends on what type of gamer you are?
I only have 3 games in 2 years (360).. they are: Tenchu Z, Blue Dragon and Enchanted Arms.. which are all nothing but a waste of time and money.
If I could use the same reasoning that you're using, I can also safely say.. there is no major big hits on 360 afterall these years .. it's a shame and I'm very dissapointed. But that statement doesn't make any sense right?
DrunkRaba @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:35PM
to Solace,
yes I have heard of those games, and indeed do own Warhawk and Ratchet and Clank. I spend way too much time playing my Warhawk and hell Uncharted was great too. Heavenly Sword was a solid rent and Resistance wasn't bad as a launch title. Have not had the chance to play Folklore yet but I am going to soon. Its not that the new games are bad, its just the franchises that bring people in to buy the system have yet to make an appearance. I was simply pointing out that none of what I had ever considered the big games from Playstation, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Twisted Metal, God of War, and the more recent Killzone, Little Big Planet, have even been made playable to the general audience yet. When they do, I really expect to see the PS3 start selling like hot-cakes.
xs3ro @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:41PM
Damn... 2 weeks ago my friend and i watched the GT.com vids and agreed that this game looks like a lot of fun... to bad they stopped the ps3-version... guess M$ paid again...
bugatti23007 @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:39PM
Lucky for me I have the PS3 and 360 I will probably rent Frontlines if it gets a decent review and and unlock achievement points while I wait for Killzone.
hodgey @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:51PM
I played the demo on 360, it pretty much sucks. Im so tired of these boring shooters. Its not going to sell on either platform so who cares.....its not like THQ has been putting out quality games recently anyways....(see RvsSM 08)
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:57PM
Why the hell can't developers give a straight f**king reason as to why they cancel something?!
"Consistent with these initiatives, we have taken actions to strengthen our pipeline and position ourselves to compete aggressively with compelling, high quality games."
WTF IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!?!?!
emaxximus @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:45PM
They know that they cant satisfy the you with reasons, so they try to baffle you with bull$hit. I hate that worse than if they had just said "we dont care about ps3 owners". I'm glad I dont like FPS games anyway.
MikePB @ Feb 20th 2008 9:23PM
It was so f**k'n stupid how they cancelled frontlines. I was really looking forward to buy this game, it looked so awesome. Although, all these comments have said that frontlines isn't the game to have. But I'm still F**K'N MAD!
Jonah Falcon @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:01PM
Probably has something to do with the shakeup in THQ executives:

Who Cares, there are too many fps these days
Jonah Falcon @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:34PM
ONE hot summer’s day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch. “Just the things to quench my thirst,” quoth he. Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch. Turning round again with a One, Two, Three, he jumped up, but with no greater success. Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: “I am sure they are sour.”
CrimsonAngel @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:18PM
It is kind of sad really.
Even the normally rabid fans of 360 are not really considering this a win in any way,
No taunting no thing at all you mostly get a blank expression and the words "What game??"
nihillasohen @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:22PM
It sounds like a company that is having a bad quarter, and is taking evasive action. Maybe they made a quick buck to go exclusive or maybe the cut cost by canceling PS3 version. The game has nothing special about it and it will most likely going to tank on the PS3 due to quality issues. PS3 has a lot of quality games that are worth the money.
Jonah Falcon @ Jan 23rd 2008 8:35PM
The bigger issue is that when a multiplayer title is semi-cancelled, it's the PS3 version that gets axed. Most of it is due to the nonstandard software development - both the PC and 360 use DirectX.
Consolcwby @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:09PM
I actually said on another site a long time ago that things like this were bound to happen when companies wanted to go multiplatform. Look, game companies suits figure that the more platforms a game comes out on the bigger the profits. Yet, it actually costs more to develop on multiple platforms if the development environments are too different. Basically, even if the environments are the same, the title will still suffer from a 'lowest common denominator' when it comes to features in graphics and sound. Obviously, this game (as well as many others) are seeing development focused on the PC, with the box being a port (a title like H3 will be the opposite). The PS3 is too different a platform to just do a simple port - it will cost too much time and money to go from PC based to PS3 based (although some companies prove there are exceptions, eg UT3). So, what does this actually mean in the end? Well, we are going to see a split with certain 3rd parties choosing one console over another. That's right people - I believe we are seeing the beginning of the end to 3rd party multiplatform games, unless we are talking about EA, Ubi, or Activision.
dartmerc @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:30PM
I think soon, exclusive 3rd party games will be a thing of the past.
Aaron @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:22PM
No more THQ games for me.
Mike @ Jan 24th 2008 1:26PM
Yeah cant remember a good THQ game?? Maybe Worms: Open Warfare for the PSP.
Ruben @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:26PM
(360 fanboy speaking)
Frontlines? Fan F**king tastic.
adamantypants @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:41PM
Who here cares?
They probably cancelled it on PS3 once they cleaned the shit out of their pants from seeing Resistance 2.
dragonric @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:53PM
This speaks volumes about the ease of programming games for the 360.. if it's so easy why are there so many shi**y exclusive games out there for it?? They said they tried, well I say "HS".. What's the matter with Kaos? For that matter THQ.. they SERIOUSLY need to talk to Insomniac or Naughty Dogg because their reason for not continuing to support games for the PS3 is just stupid. The PS3 system is to date, the most superior gaming system available, and if they can't do it with the staff they have.. they seriously need to get people who can.
lionzub @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:57PM
Hmm what's going on? I missed the whole story, I was too busy leveling up in Call of Duty 4.
wocyob @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:23PM
lmao GG
Elsnerma @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:48PM
Sounds to me like:
1. We don't have enough money to release this on both platforms.
2. Xbox has the bigger install base (in America, at least) so we're going to bank on the one that'll make us more money.
3. We'd cancel it for both platforms, honestly, but we had sunk too much money into development before we realized that there are already 3 bajillion better FPS games on both platforms, and about 0% interest in our title.
Honestly, is it a good sign for a game when the first time I've heard of it is when I hear it's cancelled?
Organic_Shadow @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:48PM
[/buying anymore thq games]
kerbero9 @ Jan 24th 2008 12:28AM
It's true that this is not a huge blow to the PS3. This game will get lost in the sea of quality FPS that are already out there.
What should make the PS3 fanboys a little nervous though is that is WAS the PS3 version (out of the 3) that got the axe. 3rd party support is shifting (or maybe already has) toward the 360 camp. You would of never seen this last gen.
How many 3rd parties dropped PS2 versions in favor of Xbox versions last gen? uhhh...none.
History has shown that the biggest installed userbase gets all the 3rd party love. And the console with the most 3rd party love sits on top.
Efeez1986 @ Jan 24th 2008 2:55AM
Who cares, this game looks generic as hell. I'm sick of shooters, the only fps's i'm buying are Killzone 2 and Resistance 2.
Phizzy @ Jan 24th 2008 4:39AM
I've never heard of this game.
Phizzy @ Jan 24th 2008 4:40AM

Carlton @ Jan 24th 2008 5:49AM
Uncharted just broke 1m in sales and it is still selling well in Europe.
Brian Spence @ Jan 24th 2008 7:53AM
who. cares.
Simstim @ Jan 24th 2008 9:45AM
Who cares? As far as 360 exclusives go frontline isn't one to be waving in people's faces, its a shitty Medal of Honor ripoff.
Anyway, THQs new execs said the company is going to concentrate making Wii shovelware for now on. People would have to be on crack to think the 360 is this gens lead console, given the Wii's success and the 360's poor sales in Japan and Europe.
Randy Kayfish @ Jan 24th 2008 9:48AM
Dear Snyper831. I think you are wrong (my opinion). Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance and Folklore to name a few. Even Lair offered something to some people that are NOT on the 360. HS, Uncharted and RandC showed a lot of the PS3's power. Can they be done on the 360? I don't think they can in their current form. Sometimes the power of a system is not just what you see on the screen. There is a lot more going on in a game than just graphics. When comparing multi-platform games please keep in mind that developers WANT THEM TO LOOK THE SAME. Sometimes some things do creep in though. COD4 is better on the PS3 as well as Darkness and a few others. PS3 is catching on for 3rd party people. Also, be it right or wrong...money talks in many of these cases when 3rd parties pick a platform.
mike @ Jan 24th 2008 10:35AM
I personally don't care about this game, but the fact that it's another cancelled game has me a bit worried. What's the deal with this? Why can't people make games for this system?
Noc @ Jan 24th 2008 12:03PM
I don't recall hearing about developers cancelling games on PS3?
THQ cancelled it because they wanted to get the game out ASAP. Their company is in financial ruin. They have nothing to sell and they need a product to bring some much needed cash - this is about their survival, not "what system sells the best".
Bottom line is that the game was clearly developed on the traditional X360/PC mindset and, as everybody now knows, would take more effort to port over to PS3. It's strictly a business decision on their part - they need a product to sell ASAP.
Bryant @ Jan 24th 2008 12:29PM
Can somebody say incompetent programmers..?
Bryant @ Jan 24th 2008 12:38PM
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the 360 can handle Uncharted, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet and Clank. I mean Halo 3 looked great in full resolution didn't it? Oh wait.. Sorry, I forgot the 360 couldn't even handle H3 in full 720p.
Not that it mattered gameplay wise - H3 is a fun game for sure, but the point IS capability superiority, right? You lose.
carton @ Jan 24th 2008 12:49PM
After sampling the 360 version of this "game", I am extremely jealous of PS3 owners!!!
THIS STINKING TURD SHOULD BE CANCELLED ON ALL PLATFORMS
Poor PS3 owners! You will just have to make do with games like METAL GEAR SOLID 4
RESISTANCE 2
KILLZONE 2
