It's creepy, sure, but a lot of you have wanted to know what's up with Quantic Dream and those new motion capture pictures released a while back for Heavy Rain. Here's the video of the motion capture of ... eyes? Darting around suspiciously? There's still the notion that you're looking at a video game, but the line is getting rather blurry. Take a look and let us know what you think -- remember though that viewing a YouTube video is nothing like viewing the video in HD on your PS3 (something we won't get to do for a while).
Bravo QD. This is top-notch work. They're doing something revolutionary, and that's examining, in great detail, what makes people look real and applying that to their modeling / skinning / animation process.
It's very easy for most people to say "that looks fake" but it's extremely hard to nail down exactly *why* it looks fake. Once you get the textures right, the skin right, the eyes and hair right...it still looks fake. This video, however, does not.
I don't care if they work on this for 5 years, when it comes out, it's going to be the best looking game of all time.
I think you are missing the point. The demo says it's a motion capture of a face and eyes. That is the whole point of the video, not the hair or anything else for that matter.
seeing how it is a youtube video it is even easier to blur the line. When you have a low res video it helps to mask any imperfections in detail that might be visable once it moves to HD. Then agian, it may be bring out even more great details. Who knows.
Too much desaturation for the colours to look natural, but apart from that, its awesome :D This project has got me hooked from the moment the job interview video was released.
I think Quantic Dream just built the equivalent of the Wright Flyer--they may have figured out the method of crossing the valley--just haven't developed the tech enough yet. Can't wait till we get a Cessna.
The truth is for something that is heavily scrutinised in a way most games are not I think it is pretty convincing. Especially when you consider even in CG movies they have struggled to create convincing movement. A lot of games have bridged technology gaps on the strength of their animation. Prince of Persia, Impossible Mission and ICO spring to mind. It is about observation the tiniest detail can throw us into disbelief. It actually would have been great had they not said anything about technology and just let people comment on it without it being the focus. I think people would have been more complimentary.

It's a step. Not a massive one but jesus is it a soft, furry, cute pink step made of love.

Getting rid of creepy motionless eyes is a good step for getting rid of the uncanny valley. Good work on this, QD. The movements are very life-like.
...Of course, watching it now made me very conscious of moving my eyes around even a little as I type.

You know, I just recently heard about this game and I'm getting more and more excited about this.

Meh.
Watch the hair. Doesn't even move like it should.
No wonder they're showing us that much in view.

Now they need to work on mouths/teeth. Maybe it's just me, but something about CGI mouths destroy realism for me much more than lifeless eyes.
