Konami (once again) confirms there will be no MGS4 demo
When it comes to Metal Gear Solid 4, there are two rumors that will just not die. First up, of course, is the zombie-rumor that the game is going over to the Xbox 360. Second only to that though, is the often denied rumor that there will be a MGS4 demo coming out prior to the game's release. Now, Konami has gone on the record a number of times to say that it is not happening, but yet still fans hold out hope.
Unfortunately, PSX Extreme reports that once again Ryan Payton has denied the reports of an upcoming PSN demo in his regular Kojima Production Report podcast. While it's annoying we won't be able to get a taste of MGS4 until this Summer, it's important to remember that demos aren't always a good way to really sample a game (think about Heavenly Sword's demo). Instead take solace in the fact that all the development cycles that are involved in making a demo are instead focused towards making MGS4 one of the top exclusive PS3 games of 2008.

I still to this day don't see what some people see in Heavenly Sword. In fact I thought the demo was better!
Shame about no MGS demo though, oh well still can't wait!
maverick_saturn_626 @ Jan 25th 2008 12:12AM
Its god of war with a chick, you should know that by now -_-
doc j @ Jan 25th 2008 12:24AM
Wait. MGS4 is coming to 360? Since when?
(I jest. I jest.)
brettjr @ Jan 25th 2008 12:38AM
ryan payton is so persistent and determined for there not to be a demo it's discouraging me from buying the freaking game. And what about all those people that haven't experienced MGS and are curious? Do you want them to try it out on the PS3 for the first time when the game is 30 bucks in the bargain bin.
I don't get it for a game that needs to sell so much, you'd think they would want to get it into as many hands as possible.
amish.gramish @ Jan 25th 2008 2:19PM
If there will a demo of MGS4, it would cause it to be delayed a little longer, but if it were made after the game is released, it wouldn't make any sense whatsoever. (Anyone who wanted the game would already have it or would already be buying it.)

lol this kind of sucks...oh well guess ill have to get my fix till i get the whole game
lawrence @ Jan 25th 2008 12:51AM

Why do so many idiots say Heavenly Sword is like God of War? Are you guys saying God of War is the 1st game where the main character has swords? Was GOW the 1st game that let you fight multiple enemies at once? Was GOW the 1st game that had quick button press scenes? The answer to all those is NO! I beat GOW 1 and 2 plus Heavenly Sword and they were completely diiferent.

Don't diss the heavenly sword demo. Before I tried it, I thought it was one of those games with a hot chick and some boring mission. I didn't get the hype at all. But the (very small) demo was so stellar that I pre-ordered it. Except if the game suck, I don't see any reason not to give a demo of it.

Demo's can often be misleading to the final game. I have to say I was not very impressed with Burnout Paradise from the demo, in fact I almost decided not to get the game due to the demo. Stellar reviews made me change my mind and I ended up getting the full game, which in terms of experience is very different than the demo. Where the demo was painful due to few races and tons of cut of roads the full game gives a very different feeling.
So maybe the MGS people simply feel that they can't cut a demo which would truly reflect the game in any worthwhile fashion?
Ruben @ Jan 25th 2008 7:23AM
But the demo's already made (we've seen it) and it looks full quality, like what you would expect in a great demo. Unless they've put something incredibly awesome in the game thats not in that demo... whatever... I can wait. At least Snake is in Brawl for February, oh wait....
SparkyJ23 @ Jan 25th 2008 7:33AM
Why not do what they did with MGS on the playstation 1?
Use the first level as a demo - that won't be misleading and sure as hell won't take any extra effort.
All i see from a lack of a demo is someone who doesn't want to get his game out there.

"MGS4 one of the top exclusive PS3 games of 2008"
O yay i see so in 6 months 2009 it anit exclusive anymore =P
if it was a exclusive game forever it would just say top exclusive for ps3 (maybe)
JKPierce @ Jan 25th 2008 8:40AM
It's a game. That's out in 2008.
Morons don't walk around with signs saying they're morons. Their actions make it obvious enough.
Dahk @ Jan 25th 2008 8:54AM
Neh I rather them not have the demo and just release it on time/earlier. If anything, work on the demo after it goes gold, and release it a week or two after release.
Anyway, eh there's a better picture of this one out Colin. He's got like a really whicked looking beard =P not sure where to find it though.
drdre74 @ Jan 25th 2008 1:51PM
Uh... what about the Heavenly Sword demo. That was a great demo and I played it like 50 times and loved it. It made me go buy the game first day it came out. Yeah the demo was short but it gave you a nice taste of the game play just like any other demo. I've seen worse demos. Plus Metal gear I'll buy no matter if there is a demo or not.
Ghaleon @ Jan 25th 2008 9:39AM
It's pretty weird that they have a finished demo but just don't want to upload to PSN or whatever. Oh well, I think it's a game where people know beforehand whether they're going to get it or not. I don't a demo is that important to its sales.
fuliano626@psn @ Jan 25th 2008 11:10AM
mabey the demo is to big to put on psn

It seems like an unfortunate decision, but I wonder if they're looking at some numbers that I don't know. What are the top-selling games of late... Assassin's Creed, COD4, Halo 3, etc. And did these games have demos? Perhaps some types of games do better with demos than others.
Honestly, I don't know. But it would be worthwhile to look at the correlation between demos and sales before condemning Konami's decision here.
TheWakeUpCall @ Jan 25th 2008 12:48PM
I wouldnt know anything about metal gear solid unless I played the metal gear solid 2 demo on my ps2.

MGS4: The game with recurring rumors that are running Konami's PR ragged trying to crush
kentuckyfried @ Jan 25th 2008 7:08PM
I think at this point, a demo could only help mgs4 and ps3 sales.
I've picked up demos for both mgs2 and mgs3 (very fervently for 2 in fact), and I enjoyed both of them immensely. I can imagine how somebody who's never played MGS at all would be completely thrilled to have the same opportunity on 4.
So it seems weird at this juncture as to why they don't want to release it.
Cameron @ Jan 30th 2008 12:33AM
It's weird how people start talking about Heavenly Sword on the "Metal Gear is going through bug testing" article, but ok, I'll chalk that up to the haters hating on the PS3.
Metal Gear isn't getting a demo because that takes extra time and effort, and we don't want to wait any longer for this already delayed game. We as MGS fans deserve to play this as soon as possible, and anyone who hasn't played MGS has been living under a rock (and probably has really bad taste in games to boot) so who cares what they think?
