Uncharted reaches a million sales worldwide

Of course, this also means that PS3 owners have actually been buying games. Keep it up! The PS3 can only become more attractive as a development opportunity in the future. Especially with people rewarding excellent gameplay experiences with decent sales, as seems to have been the case with Uncharted.

Now all we need, is to get Ratchet And Clank TOD (another worthy million seller) to 1 million sales, and we are sorted.
russell @ Jan 25th 2008 1:20PM
you are correct fellow fanboi
Lars @ Jan 28th 2008 2:55PM
I just bought Ratchet & Clank. So mark one more notch for R&C.
I got Uncharted for xmas. It's a wonderful game, although it gets too 'shooty' towards the end. Graphically, it makes DMC4 look like shit. I was expecting some really awesome graphics for DMC4, but I have to say I'm really dissapointed. Is it cross-platform? Maybe that's why...
Popfrogs @ Jan 25th 2008 1:22PM
Resistance sold over a million already didn't it?
Phizzy @ Jan 25th 2008 1:28PM
2 million (as of June 15, 2007).

I had a great time playing this game, I totally loved it. I'm more than happy that a sequel was confirmed.

This is a game that I'm looking forward to buying. I'm still working through Ratchet & Clank now. Nice to have such a good game to look forward to.
After Devil May Cry 4. I'm a Dante groupie.

If it sold a million then what are the numbers for rentals? If all the people that rented the game had bought it that would have been well over a million. Renting games is good but at the same time it hurts sales. This is the best game on the PS3 and everybody should have a copy of it.
Popfrogs @ Jan 25th 2008 2:07PM
Well, it kinda hurts sales. The Blockbusters, etc. still have to buy the games to rent them, so those are counted sales as well I would imagine.
bykerjock @ Jan 25th 2008 8:08PM
I actually think that R&C:ToD is probably the best game on PS3 (just my personal preference), but I do agree with you that Uncharted was fantastic.
Very much worth the price of admission.
B1gC72 - PSN: KillaKornbread @ Jan 26th 2008 6:48AM
i also loved R&C but as for the renting thing, these games are too expensive for me to buy and play through one time. so basically for me, if a game doesnt have multiplayer or isnt a title that i already have a couple of in my collection (ala R&C) then im just going to spent $8 rather than $60. i usually sit down and crank out about 6 hours at a time on games like this so they dont take that long for me to beat, a couple days tops. still a great game, but is just hard for me to get replay value out of games. (ive beaten R&C like 5 times though, that game is addictive)
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 26th 2008 3:51PM
I do want games to sell, but honestly I have to think of myself first. Sometimes buying makes sense for me (I bought R&C 5 and Resistance). Sometimes renting makes sense for me. And sometimes borrowing makes sense for me (I borrowed Heavenly Sword and Uncharted).
I kinda wish I had bought Uncharted instead of borrowing it, but in general, I just have to do what I need, not what the developer would have me do.
Nate @ Jan 25th 2008 1:54PM
Awesome. I'm glad the good games are finally getting the sales they deserve. We need to get these sales numbers up there so developers will consider us a worthy platform. I can't believe UT3 is still at like 200k sales. And Warhawk, 370k? Geez.
Popfrogs @ Jan 25th 2008 2:08PM
That may be Warhawk retail but nobody has mentioned the PSN numbers yet. That's how I bought my copy. And I just picked up UT3 2 days ago...getting burned out on COD4 with all the 'host ended match' and other nonsense that goes on with that game.
JJ @ Jan 25th 2008 2:14PM
dont forget nate that Warhawk number may just be for retail, not taking into account Digital Downloads and UTIII....its just been having a rough time, at least it hit almost a quarter million on the 3, i dont think even the PC version is half that
Goldin @ Jan 25th 2008 2:06PM
There'd be a load more sales if it wasn't sold out everywhere in the midlands and online in the UK. I got a copy when it first came out, none of my friends have been able to buy it so far.
SeanScythe @ Jan 25th 2008 2:26PM
Should that say "Past" or "Pass"?
watcher @ Jan 25th 2008 2:32PM
Popfrogs:
You're right about rental companies having to buy the game, but the sales loss stack pretty high depending on how often the game is rented. If Blockbuster buys a copy of Uncharted and rents it out to 10 people who liked the game, 9 sales are lost. Rentals are fine imo if I'd like to test a game I'm not sure about buying, but if I really like it, I would purchase it. That's my opinion on this btw.
You can't blame a company for not making a sequel to a game you really liked but rented. Especially if they feel they wouldn't see the return in sales.
Starfire @ Jan 25th 2008 10:12PM
Don't they get something each time someone rents it out though, like with DVDs? If so, people renting more of the games they won't be buying would help them and one day we may even hear that the 'main revenue is from rentals'.
california gamer @ Jan 25th 2008 2:44PM
Just 4 or 5 million to go and it will match Halo 3, and that would beat Gears of War! Resistance #'s are skewed (and motostorm for that matter) by being included as part of bundles for free... and rentals? hahaha what ever.
FreshJulius @ Jan 25th 2008 3:09PM
If you don't own this game, you're missing out... I don't get into cheering on games typically, because, really, it's each to their own, but this is by far the best fun I've had in a game in a loooong time.
Let's hope the sequel will be just as great, and maybe even better!
JayD-1K @ Jan 25th 2008 3:36PM
why would anybody buy games that look like crap? if the other devs put the work time in, we would buy their games as well! the same things were said about the PS2(it's to hard to program for, the learning curve is steep),...and now the devs are crying about how nice it is to use the same tech they've been using for the past 8 years or so!
Sony has always pushed the boundries of gaming and this time is no different. it's just going to take time for some devs to get in step!
side note: i was listening to an IGN podcast the other day, and they were talking about how some of the forums are cry about how PS3 and its games are not getting a fair shake from the gaming press! Mr. Shu (1up) said that most of it was warrented, and procceded to list why. (price and games) it's funny how a game like Bio Shock (with no MP game play) gets a 10 and games like HS and Uuncharted get knocked for hot haveing it. what do you guys think? i mean Gears of War was just as short as Heavenly Sword! and yes i've played both games!
watcher @ Jan 25th 2008 4:58PM
I agree JayD.
Money talks is all I got to say. The only reason why Halo 3 sold so much so fast has to do with the fact that 10 million dollars worth of advertising was shoved up everyone's crack. I remember seeing Halo 3 stories right next to the evening news. Only serious advertising money can make that happen.
Perhaps Sony has to drop down more money into advertising PS3 hit titles. Too many PS3 games like Uncharted have been steamrolled by advertising engines for MS and Wii games due to this.
bamf @ Jan 25th 2008 3:40PM
I like seeing good sales numbers for great games. I've not got UTIII, I think its a very hardcore game and the numbers will slowly increase for many months but there is quite a few good online shooters i.e. WarHawk, CoD4, Resistance, its hard to play them all.
KushielsScion007 @ Jan 25th 2008 4:09PM
LMAO...took it long enough didn't it?
Good job but really the lenght of time it took to reach it is pathetic...especially considering all the hype you sony fanboys and ps3fanboy in particular was throwing on it.

Heavenly Sword deserves better than this. Specifically as an action adventure game. I cant understand why everyone over looked it. It offers great variety, excellent gameplay and a good story with phenomenal cut scenes. The shiting styles, different approach to god of war style fighting and combos, and constant gameplay changes was great. Stays fresh by switching between hueg artillery battles, up close combat, ranged combat etc etc. if you own a ps3 you totally owe it to yourself to check this game out. at least rent it. No idea why it failed critically. They complain about its lenght, but personally i appreciate 10 hour quality story driven experiences over a 20 hour repetitive struggle. Not as epic as god of war, but still very rewarding and a very similarly structured yet different gameplay experience.
graphics - absolutely brilliant
gameplay - awesome mechanics, good combos, good variety
story - good
length - good
Deviation @ Jan 25th 2008 9:07PM
Because it was very popular to bash PS3 games for a while. The one real flaw the game has is that it's kinda short at seven hours so people flogged that refrain to death and dismissed it as another crappy PS3 exclusive. Fanboys suck like that.
John @ Jan 25th 2008 11:00PM
I still think Heavenly Sword is by far the best example of passing the realism barrier. The facial animations are accurate. Just load up the game and watch the heroine's eyes, as she looks around, and the tiny muscles in her face as she coyly acknowledges the gamer looking at her. I found this to be absolutely sublime and while Drake's succeeds better on other levels, the eyes still are not correct, nor are they in any other game-- 'Sword' is the only game I have ever seen with accurate eye and facial muscle focus, and they should be commended for this art-- now if only they can make a game with less fighting (I found it disturbing after a while-- I hope that Ocean can improve on this, or maybe the new Ico project)
SonyPG @ Jan 25th 2008 5:50PM
Uncharted is a fantastic game, so it's well worth that amount of sales.

Musouka @ Jan 25th 2008 5:56PM
Strange that Uncharted sold only 1 million. Heck, we're 8 million PS3 users.
But at least I can bet that 700k+ were bought in Europe, where the game costs $100. - quite enough for NaughtyDog to continue happily developing great games for their fans :). Devs usually get 50% of revenues, and with Sony being their parent-company and publisher.... it's all roses :)
Ah also don't forget that during x-mas, Uncharted was bundled with PS3 for $50 (or Euro, I don't recall) more. There could have easily been 200k-300k bundles sold like that, I doubt those numbers are included in vgachartz' count.
Kevin @ Jan 25th 2008 6:49PM
Well I for one just rented it as it had no multiplayer.
But damn it was a good game.
Demibeard @ Jan 25th 2008 7:22PM
I'm glad to be one of that million. A very enjoyable game, very atmospheric.
Kamil @ Jan 25th 2008 8:01PM
Warhawk numbers are only retail. Download aren't counted. Also European numbers aren't up to date and represent how many units Warhawk had sold in some past moment of time (American numbers are up to last week).

I rented this game, got mad at it, and sent it back. Yes, it's gorgeous, yes it's well made. But I was on Chapter 5 and couldn't get past these people shooting at me. I tried 10-15 times, on the easiest level. With Naughty Dog, I always feel like they don't respect working people. I don't have time to play videogames that much, and when I do, I want to finish a boss (or not-boss, in this case) in less than 10 tries. I even went online and the walkthroughs said stuff like, "You will enter a watery passage. Kill all the enemies." Would it hurt so much for Naughty Dog to have an easy setting where you have to enter your birthdate, and if you were born before 1970, you have access to the easy setting? I wonder how Old Grandma Hardcore would feel about this?
Efeez1986 @ Jan 25th 2008 11:39PM
Wow, your completely off. I'm a working man as well, 40 plus hours a week of work and i beat Uncharted with no problem. I'm not trying to sound mean, but you just suck at video games. It's not up to Naughty Dog to increase your gaming skills. Uncharted has a great difficulty balance, if you can't beat it then you need to go play some Wii games.
gibson355 @ Jan 26th 2008 2:06AM
John,
I'm an old geezer born in 1968 and I had no problem getting through...I was thrown for a loop, though, when...'the twist' happened, and it took awhile for me to find a new playstyle to deal. You just need to work on your chops...go old school and try the first Phantom spider mini-boss on PS3's Devil May Cry 1 (took me a week at 2 hours a night to finally get past him)...then come back to Uncharted and it will seem to be in slow motion.
Use your cover (critical!), use your environment (i.e. explosive barrels), use choke points, and headshots do count, if sometimes less effective than in other games.
Good luck, old man!
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 27th 2008 12:38AM
Concentrate on headshots and on moving to new cover as you kill people. If you sit in one spot and try to clear the room you will run out of ammo. You need to be prepared to move forward as soon as you can to get the ammo that enemies drop when they are killed.
Also, make sure to develop a strategy vis-a-vis grenades. It is easy to think that when one is thrown at you that you are doomed. Instead, just note moving a few steps away (hopefully still behind cover) is enough to stay alive. I just move to another cover, wait for the boom and move back.
After a few of these huge fights, the combat becomes rather easy (if not a tad tedious due to too many instances of 3-4 waves of baddies coming at you in one area).
By the time I got to the rotunda battle, I was having no problem with combat, even though that room is a total shooting gallery, with baddies firing from high spots and behind cover in many directions.
Efeez1986 @ Jan 25th 2008 11:10PM
Uncharted is the REAL game of the year, despite what these bias magazines say. What the hell is wrong with people nowadays, 7 to 9 million PS3's have been sold, and only 1 million people bought Uncharted?
AF @ Jan 26th 2008 12:48AM
I have to agree Ratchet also deserves to sell more than a million. I had never played any of the previous PS2 or PSP iterations of the series before, but because it was so well reviewed I got the PS3 one on a whim. It turned out to be awesome and suck up a ton of my time. I'm still playing it to get all the skill points. It'd be a shame if it didn't at least break a million too.
Semi @ Jan 26th 2008 4:50AM
PS3 sold a million yet?
Tony @ Jan 26th 2008 10:54PM
Of course not. Only 500,000 sold with everyone buying 2 copies of the game!

mollyrulz9999 @ Jan 27th 2008 6:56AM
wow! that's pretty great! Uncharted deserves that. I myself have it (finished it in a day though, but even playing it again was as entertaining and revealed a bit more of the story that I forgot about before, so it all makes sense) and it's a great little adventure. Now we can wait for Uncharted 2. Sure they had 10 times the amount of animations than any other of naughty dog's other games they've made and the detail is off the chain, but maybe making a sequel and turning it and changing the story will make it a lot better than 'gears of whore', not that it wasn't already as good anyway.
Lard @ Jan 28th 2008 9:10PM
Good for Uncharted.
I got it for Xmas (at least someone bought it for me!) and loved it. Really fun.
I'm still trying to get through Crushing, but after getting through Normal and Hard, I'll do it.
