Sony: "No 120GB PS3 in the UK"

The rumour of a 120GB+ PS3 has been gestating for a few days now and SCEE has seen fit to clarify that, even if such a machine existed, it won't be coming to the UK. In a statement to GameIndustry.biz a Sony representative said that they "do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK". This puts pay to the idea that the extra HD space was for the upcoming PlayTV service, which launches in the region in March. Which is a shame, really, because the extra space would really come in handy.
No doubt rumours will continue regarding a release of a 120GB+ PS3 in America until SCEA shoot it down, as SCEE has, or until we start getting leaks from the big electronics stores. That's what usually happens, at least.

60 gb is pretty much enough for me..
Kane @ Jan 29th 2008 3:39PM
you can always get a bigger HD
Nick @ Jan 29th 2008 4:06PM
Seriously. I will never understand why HDD space is a major purchase point with the PS3. It definitely is with the 360. But when you can buy a cheaper unit and spend $75 on a 200gig+ HDD to swap in is by far more sensible.
Christian @ Jan 29th 2008 3:53PM
That 'no plans' statement do not mean anything. Even if they where going to release such a SKU tomorrow they would still give that standard reply.
Livi70590 @ Jan 29th 2008 6:37PM
^ Truth
Jove @ Jan 29th 2008 3:55PM
...they always say that. but the response to the rumor left the door open to things like, maybe north america and japan will get the bigger hdd ps3? i mean not europe but maybe other parts? they never said there would be no other model at all for any market... thats what me thinks anyways...
WBM @ Jan 29th 2008 5:05PM
Heck, I just see "do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK" and read it as though, "actually, we're releasing a 160Gb instead" :p We can but hope
Dahk @ Jan 29th 2008 7:10PM
Haha those were my initial reactions.
I was like, "No one said anything about a 160GB!"
True_Darknight @ Jan 29th 2008 3:59PM
Or or... the forever fun
There will be no 120GB Ps3 in the UK....
next Month - a new 160GB PS3 will be released in UK in time for PlayTV.
120GB PS3 for US and the rest of the non PLayTV fools!!
dadanman @ Jan 29th 2008 4:06PM
This seems to be the same robot response. The deal is I truely think the 80gig is on its way out. I love my 60gig and my buddy has the 40gig that just don't par up with mine but.....I think the 40gig is selling better than any model to date. I would really like to see the sales 80 vs. 40.
Tranando @ Jan 29th 2008 4:10PM
CURRENTLY....
nihillasohen @ Jan 29th 2008 4:17PM
It's a numbers game; Sony won't be out done in the space category. It's like when Xbox to the "360" because xbox2 would sound inferior to the PS3.
There will be a 120GB SKU, I guarantee it!
Consolcwby @ Jan 29th 2008 9:39PM
Really? I thought MS had gone through 358 other horrid design ideas before bestowing the public with this current xbox... O.o ...the 360 being the last horrid design. =D
JaseH @ Jan 29th 2008 10:26PM
@Consolcwby -
He's right. Microsoft has gone through lots of F'd up designs and names for the console...
"NextBox" "Xbox2" and so on...
They pretty much chose Xbox 360 since it didn't sound inferior to the Playstation 3 name.
Notice the "3's"

I think they called it 360 because Xbox 2 would sound as a bad console, compared to Playstation 3.
remer @ Jan 29th 2008 6:44PM
why the hell does this even matter we can swap out for a bigger hard drive its not hard to do it and cheaper then buying a whole new ps3 im starting to get pissed here sony should be working on new features on the ps3 much rather then changing around hard drive size its like they've become unbelievably stupid since ps3 came out i love my ps3 but come on man im having to resort to playing with my red ring box360 ......please sony for us fans out there please snap the fuck out it this stupidity your not the leader this gen and if sony dont wake up soon M$ is gonna keep stomping sony
Popfrogs @ Jan 29th 2008 6:58PM
How did you get all the periods in your paragraph to land in one spot?
Otsego_Undead @ Jan 29th 2008 4:24PM
seriously. just buy another sata drive...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150014+1035915133&name=SATA+3.0Gb%2fs
80 gigs cheap as $45. its SO simple to install. my grandma could do it.
Dan Davis @ Jan 29th 2008 4:57PM
I was wondering if you could install a sata drive on the ps3... I have been mulling over getting a 250 gb hdd for awhile now, but I can't seem to open my wallet for $180. These sata drives seem much cheaper... how are they, performance-wise? Maybe your grandma can hook me up?
Livi70590 @ Jan 29th 2008 6:39PM
Dan, SATA laptop drives are the only drives that you can install on Playstation 3. Speed is OK, but I have no idea if a 7200rpm will overheat. It's currently a Seagate 5400rpm 2.5 Inch SATA that you get with all the SKUs.
nihillasohen @ Jan 29th 2008 4:43PM
Would you buy?
(120 GB) hard drive
Backwards Compatible
Dual Shock 3
4 USBs
Memory card slots
Free Game (R&C, Uncharted, Call of Duty 4) etc…..
$450.00
or 40gb model at $350.00?
Popfrogs @ Jan 29th 2008 4:51PM
This probably won't happen since the British pound is too strong for imports. Sony would have to charge more and the UK sales would drop as a result. I imagine they've been happier with the 40GB (cheaper unit) sales than anything else in Europe.
kiko @ Jan 30th 2008 4:45PM
at undead and davis those hard drives wont work you need a notebook hd. they cost a bit more but still good value.
Organic_Shadow @ Jan 29th 2008 5:33PM
Can they make it any more obvious? Not in THE UK. Didn't say not at all. Wow Sony why do you even make any attempts at denying these things?
Carl;)G @ Jan 29th 2008 5:54PM
We NEED a new PS3 with FULL! PS2 B/C!!!!!!!!!!! :-/
Played Ratchet&Clank 1,2,3 +Taito Legends 1(I LOVE ME RETRO GAMES!) ;-P on my 60GB PS3(its 160GB now) ;-P
and the games stutter like mad!!! :-/
It REALLY annoys me that does!!!
Its like buying a new car and only getting 3 wheels with it!!! :-/
+I DON'T WANT TO USE MY OLD PS2 to play my PS2 games anymore, just want one console to do it all(like Sony promised) :-/
Livi70590 @ Jan 29th 2008 6:41PM
No, it's like buying a new car and finding out that all the fuzzy dice, performance parts etc. that you had on your last will not work on it.
Consolcwby @ Jan 29th 2008 9:44PM
Funny, my 60gb PS3 played Taito Legends okay... and about the 3 wheeled new car, why pick on people who love and own Reliants? (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliant_Robin )
ajiezer @ Jan 29th 2008 5:55PM
It's always the same thing with Sony (BTW I don't hate them), such a predictable marketing practice. I hope the new sku would come with the reduced blu-ray reader and a nice plus.
Dahk @ Jan 29th 2008 7:11PM
Lol @ Popfrogs.
I wonder how those words string together in his head. I think ADD hitting this generation hard. Or its cousin, ADHD.
Starfire @ Jan 29th 2008 8:03PM
A denial with 'at this time' is of course almost a promise that something is on it's way. It's a tricky issue for Sony, as they've finally found a PS3 that sells well and makes the PS3 sound affordable (the 40 Gig) and is also reasonable to manufacture for them- but it doesn't scream 'We are the masters of technology and all your living rooms belong to us', as they like their products to.
So I expect, as I did before the rumours started, a 160 gig version. After all, 80 gig isn't all that much in a laptop drive these days and as anyone with a bunch of hard drives will tell you, data expands to fill whatever storage you have... in this case HD download data!
crazypenguin @ Jan 29th 2008 9:18PM
yeah right, since when has a single rumor about sony not been true? "ps3 price drop soon" sony's response: never. will there be a psp redesighn, no. seriously, saying no just makes me feel like they are going to say yes. rumor squashing from sony is like trying not to hype it up too much.
Edd Mills @ Jan 30th 2008 3:41AM
What is it with Sony's reluctance to give Europe bigger hard drives? It's as if they think we can't handle anything too big. As much as you can upgrade, a lot of people don't realise this or just don't want to have to upgrade hence would want to just buy a stock unit with a larger drive.
sam @ Jan 30th 2008 8:52AM
a few weeks ago i went into gamestation and was told that the 120gb is coming out in about 5 months... so say may time? seems quite a way of but they sounded very sure about it... oh and this was because i asked about the 80gb and was told thats not coming to england EVER... well all hope is not lost yet
