Europeans being price gouged by retailers for PS3 DMC4

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, a spokesperson for Capcom said: "We don't set the prices of our games, that's at the discretion of the retailer. In this specific instance, the process has resulted in a price difference, but the process itself is not something we completely control."
Hopefully, gamer outrage will remind retailers that no one likes to be treated unfairly. Stay tuned for our full review of Devil May Cry 4 next week.

That's pretty unfair for the Europeans. I would completely boycott that store if I were them.
Good luck! I hope that price comes down.
brettjr @ Jan 30th 2008 11:45AM
I don't get it, why? Are retailers trying to cash in on the fact that the PS3 might sell well or is it the other way around that they are trying to discourage PS3 sales so people with multiple consoles will get the xbox one instead.
gordon_strange @ Jan 30th 2008 1:13PM
perhaps its to do with the strength of the pound/euro?
farfisa @ Jan 30th 2008 12:12PM
You could have stopped at "Europeans being price gouged by retailers!"
Brodie-san @ Jan 30th 2008 12:15PM
There you go again stating "European" and failing to mention the euro price. And you were doing so well with the European PSN update reports.
*sniff*
:)
Byron517 @ Jan 30th 2008 12:15PM
That really sucks!! Can't Sony do something about it?? I mean that's a pretty unfair advantage and it also is a form of discrimination! I mean I'm all for FAIR competition!! I would be pissed if Xbox was getting shafted!! All fanboyism aside that's unfair!!
Nate @ Jan 30th 2008 12:28PM
it's not discrimination or unfair. Frankly, it's stupid for the retailers to do that. Chances are, *some* retailers aren't going to jack the prices on their PS3 games, and those ones are the ones that will get more sales. it's a free market system... supply and demand. Retailers can (generally) price things any way they want. Just don't buy from those retailers that price things in ways you don't like.
bs6268d @ Jan 30th 2008 12:18PM
sony step in!!!!!!!!!!
ryan @ Jan 30th 2008 12:47PM
that's bull.
but sorta off topic: does anyone know why this game is required to be installed? sure it helps load times, but you'd think people could have an option right?
my theory: for some reason if played straight from the blu ray disc, it would in fact be much SLOWER than the 360 version as some multi platform games have been in the past.
CJWheatley @ Jan 30th 2008 12:49PM
My sweet jebus this blog is overly Euro-centric. No offense to my Euro-brothers but this blog seems to mainly post stories about European Sony happenings. How about tossing the rest of us a bone once in awhile?
Nate @ Jan 30th 2008 12:56PM
That's funny, I always thought it was pretty US-centric... and I'm even from the US!
I do think it pretty much leaves the rest (non-USm non-EU) of the world hanging... but, to be fair, the rest of the world is a small percentage of the PS3 install base. Plus, I'm pretty sure PS3 Fanboy is based in the US, and thus has a lot less access to information from those areas.
What specifically are you looking for?
Dahk @ Jan 30th 2008 1:14PM
Lol this site has both because both SCEA and SCEE typically control what happens in the larger markets. Japanese news doesn't exactly relate as much to readers of this blog - and there's always the trouble of translating.
Now on the other hand, SCEC (Canada) has nothing happening. I want some Canadian news! (Even though it basically shadows the US). Release dates are always iffy, nothing special happens here, and the worst thing is there are ZERO contests! =(.
Someone should start up ps3CanFanboy.com. It'll be practically empty with one post being about Rock Band delays from 2 months ago, but we'll have one comment section and we'll flood those servers with comments.
Musouka @ Jan 30th 2008 12:48PM
So, DMC4 costs $120? I can see the world laughing at us. I'm anyway constantly wavering between buy/skip for DMC4. Or well, this mind end-up imported from USA. 2 games for the same price there.
Jevanzz @ Jan 30th 2008 1:45PM
It's a fuggin' joke ain't it?
I don't think it's that Americans have it extraordinarily cheap, I think it's that we're constantly being 'price gouged' on everything!
ka-ge @ Jan 30th 2008 2:05PM
Agreed. Although we do supposedly earn more on average here, and the pound is still the strongest currency.
With prices, it's like they turn the dollar symbol into a pound sign, and that's the new price for us.
Ninja Dood @ Jan 30th 2008 5:32PM
My computer has a currency conversion gadget thingy. It says 60 U.S. dollars are 40.356 European money thingies(It just says EUR). I just might be cheaper for him to import.
kingofwale @ Jan 30th 2008 1:03PM
just buy it off Amazon.com and ship it over. PS3 is region-free for a reason. ;)
MJ @ Jan 30th 2008 1:25PM
Amazon.com won't ship games to the UK (and Europe afaik), neither will PlayAsia cos of the Liksang business (which is seriously annoying as there's loads of accessories etc I want off there).
Think the most reliable one i've used to import is videogamesplus, it's just waiting for delivery and possibly being hit with import duty kind of makes it easier to not bother importing.
Nate @ Jan 30th 2008 3:58PM
Hmm... sounds like a business waiting to happen. I have amazon prime, so I can get things shipped to me for free, then ship overseas for a small premium.... step 3, profit!
Organic_Shadow @ Jan 30th 2008 1:20PM
Capcom's clever wording still leaves it open to them selling to suppliers at a higher cost on PS3's version, and then it being up to suppliers->retailers as to whether or not they eat the cost.
In either case this is absolutely ridiculous.
FreakyJP¨ @ Jan 30th 2008 1:34PM
Hmm, I don't get it.
On play.com DCM4 is €46 on X-box 360 and €62 on PS3. So here PS3 version has a normal game price, while X-box version is cheaper :O
naruto007 @ Jan 30th 2008 1:42PM
MS paying retailers to sell ps3 version for more money?
Liarliar @ Jan 30th 2008 1:47PM
So...who sets the "recommended retail price"?
Play and Amazon both show a £10 difference between RRPs, suggesting to me that they aren't setting them. So who does?
JaseH @ Jan 30th 2008 1:47PM
FFS.
Europe isn't just the UK.
Idiots.

in the uk i've noticed since ps3 launch, the retailer GAME ltd. has consistenly listed ps3 games at gbp £5 more than equivalent x360 versions. its a corporate rip-off on the high street and this is the uk's largest specialist games retailer with the largest high street presence. thats a straight up fact and dmc 4 preorders at my local store last weekend, ran at £45 ps3 vs £40 x360. the most annoying thing is it dissuades people from the high strret, and prospective owners from purchasing the system (think of a mother weighing up a console purchase for the kids, concerned over a price premium on games)
Demibeard @ Jan 31st 2008 4:30PM
Sorry CASHCOM, you can kiss my furry butt if you think I'm going to pay your unfair PS3 Tax.
morpheus @ Feb 7th 2008 9:44AM
I just pre-ordered DMC4 from amazon.co.uk. The limited edition is the same price as the normal one @ £39.99. :) But yeah, the xbox version is £10 cheaper, M$ dirty tricks again?
bamf @ Jan 30th 2008 4:31PM
non ones forcing anyone to pay that much, there will be other prices. Smaller game stores will have it cheaper or online. You can also buy the US version which i've done before. If no one buys from these stores then they will be forced to lower their prices, and where did you get $120 musouka, no game in UK is £60
Xiru @ Jan 30th 2008 4:23PM
This is stupid. Everyone knows DMC4 will sell better on PS3 than 360 in Europe. Take a look at Burnout sales over there. I just don't understand the logic behind this. PS3 is just making a comeback and this happens. I won't be surprised if DMC4 sells better on 360 now.
Ruben @ Jan 30th 2008 4:53PM
I wish there was a way to buy straight from developers, because consumers would save money at the wholesale price. Don't worry guys, when Im a developer I will do this to avoid all of the BS!
Consolcwby @ Jan 30th 2008 11:40PM

I'm calling shenanegans on this statement by Capcom. Anyone in their right mind should realize that retailers do not make much money on games bought new - and even less if they mark the price up. Capcom's in control of this, I swear - and it makes me angry! =S
matthew lawrence @ Jan 31st 2008 12:42PM
no not precisely you see the 360 of devil may cry 4 will be £0 in retail, while the ps3 version will be £40. but for up brits, thats nothing different because ps3 games are usually more than 360 games. example? in game burnout paradise was £40 for 360. it was £45 for us ps3 guys. i thought it was going to be £50 for the game. phew
