M33 custom firmware catches up to latest 3.90 release
It didn't take too long for the talented M33 team to release a custom version of Sony's latest Skype-enabled firmware. With the new Network Update feature of these custom releases, homebrew users can simply update directly from their systems. However, those that aren't fortunate enough to be near a wi-fi point can simply download the necessary files here. (But, considering Skype is the main benefit of 3.90, we think only those with reliable access to wireless internet will really download this update.)

Let's hope Dark_AleX cracks the firmware that Crisis Core runs on as quickly as this one.

Sounds to me like Sony is just "phoning it in" security wise when it comes to updating these firmwares. When it takes DA about a day to get his custom firmware up to date you know either Sony didn't change much or he knows someone on the inside.

i dont really think they are trying anymore honestly. a Custom firmware drops like 2 days after and Official firmware all the time. this may be their way of embracing homebrew.
o and NO on that pun lol. just NO.
Erik @ Jan 31st 2008 11:43PM
I thought maybe he was able to get the older PSP to run Skype, but it didn't show up on my system, so I guess not.
Ruben @ Feb 2nd 2008 11:20PM

Raj @ Feb 1st 2008 4:59AM
Can someone find out if he is working on a way to enable Skype on the phats, I've searched and searched and found no conclusive answer...
aleks @ Feb 1st 2008 5:23AM

Kramer @ Feb 1st 2008 8:54AM
so? will it make Skype work on original PSP?
I don't see any explanation anywhere how this firmware different from official.
Martin @ Feb 1st 2008 10:20AM
Skype is not enabled on the original PSP due to less system memory. I've heard rumblings of somehow getting it to work by using an enhanced swap system, or swapping with the memory stick, but I doubt it will happen.
James @ Feb 1st 2008 1:05PM
I doubt it too. The transfer speed between the PSP's EDRAM vs Memory Stick? I'd laugh but the EDRAM got there before me.
Brian @ Feb 1st 2008 12:14PM
the firmware has been cracked already huh! Make me wonder how different Sony's fw from DA's cfw .... is it simply changing a line or two of code. Is this Sony's way of unofficially supporting homebrew apps .... they seem to take ideas from it.
rockeranimefreak @ Feb 1st 2008 3:50PM
yay Dark_AleX =) I guess this is to have more compatible ps1 games... oh yeah we have voip on the phat it's in alpha though it's called Furikup 0.1a I haven't used it but I heard it's really good. So Sony, If homebrew dev's can make voip on phat why can't you guys put skype on it?
Robert @ Feb 5th 2008 4:44AM
According to the official line, Skype takes advantage of the Lite's upgraded RAM and lags on the Phat to the point where it's non-deployable. Skype's software is very high-quality as well. Not to disparage what the homebrewers have come up with, but Skype is highly mature in comparison - alpha (homebrew) versus a product that shipped several years ago (skype). Word from a Cisco higher-up was that Skype could handle as much as 2.5x the packet loss that its competitors' products could before degrading beyond reason.
As far as getting Skype to run off the Memorystick, well, good luck. The level of abstraction from the processor is proportional to the speed of access by the processor. Registers are described as 1 in terms of access time; first level cache is 10; RAM is 100; hard drive is 1000. The memorystick isn't wired up like RAM, it's wired up like a hard drive. So, if 100 is acceptable for operations that're run commonly, adding an order of magnitude onto that will hurt it exponentially. You've made the program have to wait ten times longer to do what was otherwise fine. Yes, it can continue encoding incoming voice data, but it will have to keep putting it on the bus to ship out to the DSP (presumably - I can't imagine they'd leave that unused for this purpose), then....yeah, there's a lot going on in there and that one little extra layer of abstraction can and does ruin the ability to competently run Skype.

So, I just got a PSP and love it, but know nothing about what i can do with cracked firmware. Being the nerd that i am i'm going to get the cracked firmware. I found where to get it and how to put it on my PSP but haven't found anything telling me what i can do with it. Can anyone point me toward a page that'll enlighten me?
Kevin @ Feb 1st 2008 8:46PM
Custom Firmware allows you to play games without the UMD, make backups of your UMDs, run homebrew games and applications.
Put it this way. Everything you could ever want for PSP that Sony wouldn't put.
If you are in need of a Pandora's Battery and Magic Mem stick and go to S.I.T.H.S. I will gladly put CFW on your PSP.

etim @ Feb 12th 2008 8:30AM
i think Dark Alex knows someone on the inside to be able to release his own custom firmware just a few days after the official firmware or does SONY support custom firmware to make it so easy anyway i enjoy it cuz i am on 3.80M33 and its cool
nay @ Feb 13th 2008 3:41PM
niis there any way u can get skype on "PHAT" psp
jvgough @ Feb 13th 2008 5:47PM
You can make backups of your UMDs? Thats pure sweetness. Can someone tell me how to do this? And what else can u do with custom firmware?
DagMX @ Feb 18th 2008 7:32AM
Easiest way is to install the latest custom firmware. Then turn of the PSP. WHen booting up, hold down L+R and go into recovery mode. Here you can set the XMB flash drive to UMD.
Then just hook up your PSP via USB as you normally would and just rip the files.
Custom firmware allows for running of homebrew apps, registry hacks and tweaks to the OS, running of any PS1 game, running of PSP games of the memory stick and the playing of UMD movies of any region.

ay its easy to make custom firmware, but im not gonna tell u all im gonna tell u is tat u need to change most of the coding, if you have had custom firmware and official firmware u know the difference, ive been stdieing, ive got 2 psp's 1 on official firmware and the other on m33, they are both v.3.80 but huge differences!, so id get the update files on the computer and look at the coding and they are totally different, its hard to crack the official firmware tho, because you can brick youir psp to test it!, thats why i have about 4 batteries for each psp 2 of them are pandora batterise and the other 2 are normal!
ive got the official firmware update 3.90 and trying to crack the code! its freiken hard, im designing this, so that with one push of a button on my firmware it updates to the newest version automatically if u have a mem stick otherwise it wont work!, so ill see if i can get that up!, you will be able to watch satellite tv on it, radio (v.3.80) skype (3.90) and everything else in other versdions of custom firmwares and official firmwares, and if u know about themes how some will work on a psp depending on the firmware, with this you will be able to use any firmwaer for any themes, there was a site for 3.08 OE themes (i think thats the right firmware) and then you ave the .ptf themes for v3.71 and above firmwares, my custom firmware is gonna be able to be compatible with all them types of themes!
ill post a comment of the site that u can download the file from when its finished
