It's been a rough road for Sony. However, things are finally looking good for the Japanese electronics company. Sony's third fiscal quarter had a 25% rise in net income to 200.2 billion yen ($1.9 billion) for the entire company. According to the NY Times, the typically loss-driven games division also generated some profit due to reduced production costs. In fact, PSP, has been outperforming even the expectations of the company. The original sales goal for the fiscal year 2007 (which ends in March) was 10 million. With such a positive response to the redesign, and a continuous streak of fantastic sales in Japan, the target has been raised 30 percent, to 13 million units.
With an ever-increasing line-up of games in the pipeline, including heavy hitters like God of War and Crisis Core, we're certain that PSP's momentum will carry far into Sony's next fiscal year.

Do you know in what term of units, it is being measured in thousand or millions?
Form how I read the chart was:
21.3 software units shipped in Q3FY 06
18.3 software units sold in Q3FY 07
Which is a change of -14%.
I'm pressuming they didn't go back and re-adjust the unit sales figure for FY06, for they said they just started measuring sales by number sold in Q1FY07.

That image (if it's correct) shows -14%, not -18%.

Brain cramp on the 18/14 thing
Good point merc that it is shipped vs sold...
Given that I would think supply lines are held tight though even if 20% went 'unsold' in the past are we still not looking at a large disparity between new PSP units sold vs the software sales increase?
Come on people...buy a freaking game for your machine.

Software slaes would be better if we also got access to the same level of special/limited editions that Japan gets, and better games available on the PSN (UK) Store - last week we got Judge Dredd..!? Where's Resident Evil got to Sony?!
It's really good news about the sales of the PSP Slim & Lite though. Hopefully this will lead to more exclusives for the PSP as well. More games like Crush, Silent Hill Origins and Patapon would be awesome...

March is hitting my wallet pretty hard; I've already pre-ordered FFVII:CC and GOW:COO, sheesh. It's pretty crazy that two can't-miss titles are coming out in the same month!

Maybe I am just being a supreme optimist, but I think PSP software sales will skyrocket this year. Between Crisis Core and GoW alone there should be a big jump, and add some of the other gems announced, more to come at the the end of the year, and all the new PSN content, I see big things ahead.
pixelator @ Jan 31st 2008 2:21PM
Well, a drop in software sales is disappointing. Software publishers will be far less interested in the increase in hardware base as they will attach rate.
I'm worried we're seeing a peak in the PSP lifespan. I predict 2008 Christmas will be slower than 2007, but the last decent PSP splash - 2009 will see the system on its way out, I think (if not sooner). Developers just don't pile on systems that have declining game sales.
In fact, Sony is definitely taking this on the chin. They may be making marginal profits, but Nintendo has cleaned their clock but good this gen. What blows my mind is, the Wii just doesn't appeal to me - nor most of my game-inclined friends. It's depressing how many people are sold on the Nintendo hype machine and the motion controller gimmickry. Same with the DS - I can count the number of really INNOVATIVE and INTERESTING recent games that I want to play on that platform on one hand. *shrug* 2007+ is becoming the era of the casual nongamer. Not good news for hardcore systems like the PS3 and PSP. Mix in Sony gaffes, mouthy execs & pricing issues and you have a recipe for disaster. The market leader since 1994 has truly toppled.
Kspraydad @ Jan 31st 2008 2:35PM
Too early for me to comment on PS3 vs Wii (though I can't actually put them in the same league to actually see them as competition) but as far as PSP goes I think capturing 30% of the market on your first try is pretty good.
merc25 @ Jan 31st 2008 2:40PM
What I'm thinking is that that they haven't adjusted their sales figure for Q3FY06, so the real units to sale ratio might be closer to Q3FY07's.

hell yeah baby! in your face xbox hoes!!!! hehehehe sorry i just start laughin when i writte this kind of things. like this look 'hehehehehehehehehe' ahem. now on the subject at hand... its good that sony is doing good with the psp. then we can expect advancements in the handheld gaming arena cuz if you let it up to nintendo theyl just release boring things like a ds and then redesign it to make it even more stupid like ds lite. lolz sorry yall but ima fanboy for life! dont hate on me cuz this IS psp fanboy! haha
pixelator @ Jan 31st 2008 4:43PM
Someone actually uses 'LOLZ' in non-sarcastic fashion?
I'm so sorry for you.
Trickob @ Jan 31st 2008 10:36PM
yes, as you say, it is "psp fanboy". not "xbox haterz club" or
what-have-you
Jove @ Jan 31st 2008 10:38PM
you people take this too seriously...
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Jan 31st 2008 6:04PM
You know...I have a funny feeling that Patapon will actually sell more than GoW and Crisis Core. I don't know why I am getting this feeling, but I think it will happen.
Any thoughts?
Trickob @ Jan 31st 2008 10:31PM
i think it would COOL but........
Jeremy @ Feb 1st 2008 8:18PM
How? It already flopped in Japan, and I don't think US or Europe will like it either.
I honestly think software sales will tank in 2008, at least in the US, because almost no publishers are supporting the PSP anymore. Crisis Core is the last major 3rd party game, and with RAD jumping ship to the Wii after GoW PSP is done, I can't imagine we'll see anything big from Sony, either.
