Codemaster CEO: Don't dismiss Sony's ten year cycle

He admits the PS3 is going to have an uphill battle in the US, where Microsoft has dug their trenches with the 360, but the European and Japanese market will begin to more readily accept the PS3 in the coming years. Speaking of the coming years, Cousens proposes that a Wii 2 (maybe renamed the Mii 2 just for funsies) will come out before a successor emerges for the PS3 or 360 -- the latter can be upgraded over the years, but won't be replaced. We hope the PS3 does make it through ten years. The PS2 is practically there and continues to hold a lineup of titles that aren't terrible. It's still the console to pick up for RPG fanatics everywhere.

I think Wii 2 would be an even better name than Mii 2, because then in Japanese it would be called the Wii ni.
Sauvage @ Feb 2nd 2008 6:35PM
You are right, because the current version sounds more like an allergy or rash when you say Wii itch.
Phileoca @ Feb 1st 2008 6:26PM
Microsoft is going to lose all that ground when they do the inevitable and make the next generation of Xbox.
And that there, will be the end of xbox.
TinyTim121 @ Feb 1st 2008 6:40PM
I'm confused =S
Could you explain a bit more?
I mean, they make next gen operating systems and they still own like 90% of the PC market
As for the topic, i think the second sony defines itself as a console (Wii = Family, 360 = FPS genre mostly, PS3 = what speciality?) i think the PS3 will really start to win. But i think 2008 is gonna own for the PS3. Home, Little Big Plannet, MGS4, Tekken 6...just wow!
Imbro @ Feb 1st 2008 6:51PM
End of xbox? Not likely. And don't get too fanboyish. The existence of the xbox is good. Yes, good. I'm pretty sure that most of what we got now on the ps3 (different than launch specs), is a response to the xbox popularity and features. I hope all three consoles survives and makes a profit.
Musouka @ Feb 3rd 2008 4:10AM
What Phileoca means is that after Microsoft MURDERED Xbox1 (mildly said), if they do the same in less than 2 more years, all faith in their consoles will die (and most people will avoid xbox3). I didn't think so either, but everyone that owned an xbox1 and now has x360 says so in posts online.
Phileoca @ Feb 4th 2008 4:45PM
Yes, Musouka clarified well. Xbox1 came and it went. No more support for that system, and the support for that system left quickly too. If M$ makes a new system and stops supporting the 360, their fan base will be forced into another upgrade.
How will that upgrade be able to compete with the Price of the PS3? The PS3 price isn't going to go up, and with the life cycle stats of it, we're looking at least 6 more years until the next system (ps2 = 7 years before PS3 launch).
bs6268d @ Feb 1st 2008 6:52PM
but if 360 2 comes out and way betta graphics ps3 will die sry but its tru
Vince UK @ Feb 1st 2008 6:57PM
and a couple of years later the PS4 will come along with superior spec and so on.
Mike918 @ Feb 1st 2008 8:06PM
And maybe by the time that the 360 2 comes around your grammar will get better! :P
bs6268d @ Feb 1st 2008 7:16PM
ya but it will be same as this generation Sony behind a year the key to winning have ur console be 4 the other
cycopl @ Feb 1st 2008 9:50PM
Yeah, kind of like how the Dreamcast had the advantage by being released early. Oh wait...
bs6268d @ Feb 1st 2008 10:16PM
um ya and the dreamcast is gone
I love my ps3 I just want ps4 be 4 xbox 2
cycopl @ Feb 1st 2008 11:14PM
You kind of missed my point. Being released early is not the key to success. The Sega Genesis/Megadrive was released before the SNES. The Sega Saturn was released in the US before the Playstation 1, look how that turned out. The Sega Dreamcast was released before the PS2. These all may have been attributed towards poor market strategies by Sega, but it's also proof that releasing your console early is not "key".
bs6268d @ Feb 2nd 2008 1:20AM
wats ur psn Id

Dude, you're not texting on a damn phone, try spelling out a few words once in awhile. Are you paying for internet access by the number of letters you type?
Fraser JK @ Feb 1st 2008 7:17PM
Halo 3 pushed the limits of what the 360 can do... and here we have a game like Uncharted that's just barely tapped the power of the PS3... I mean some things things are just obvious, thinking about them makes my head hurt!
Brucie B @ Feb 2nd 2008 8:12AM
Whats very Obvious is you my friend are a Complete Fanboy.
Might be a 10 yr system, But they'll have a PS4 out before 10yrs you can bet your bottom dolla!
HAAS599 @ Feb 2nd 2008 3:54PM
the ps4 will be out before the ps3 dies, just like the ps3 came out before the ps2 died.
I think M$ will be in a bad spot with the xbox 720, they know the ps3 is only getting stronger and the price for the console can only get cheaper. Yet they are going to have to release a new console to compete with or out-do the ps3 in a couple of years. But how powerful of a system do they make, one that blows away the ps3 and cost 600-700 bucks. when the ps3 is costing 300 bucks?
I'm a lot more interested in what M$ is going to do with their next console, its obvious the xbox360 wont last as long as the PS3. its funny when people talk about how much the ps3 costs when not only did a xbox with all the bells and whistles of a ps3 cost the same or more but now all the xbots will be buying 2 consoles to a PS3fanboy's one. and if this trend continues, xbots will buy 4 consoles to a ps3fanboy's 2.
Musouka @ Feb 3rd 2008 4:19AM
By the way, when thinking of designs on the PS4/xbox720... they all end-up like a beefed-up Cell with XDR, separate RAM/VRAM... just like the PS3, but with more SPE cores, more RAM and more GHz. Ha-ha. The irony for x720.
Oh, and finally getting dedicated instructions for the general 3D maths.

Microsoft gets a lot of stick for "Killing" the Xbox. I owned an Xbox, and feel that it could have gone on for atleast 1 more year.
But in practice wouldn't you sooner be playing on the 360 than the Xbox. The 360 has so many improvements, and on it's own is such a great platfrom, bar the unreliability, that it doesn't matter that the Xbox could have been around for longer.
If you do a poll, I expect nearly all Xbox owners have a 360. And I have many friends who never dreamed of buying an Xbox, but picked-up a 360 because it offered so much.
Microsoft knew that they couldn't justify the Xbox project with the market share that the Xbox had gained, and had to gamble that a redesign of the whole platform would garner a less hardcore following. They managed to do it, but at the same time keep the features that made the Xbox a brilliant gaming platform.
I believe that the PS3 would still be able to hold ground in 10 years because it is over-powered and therefore could cope with the demands of devs in 5 years, but I think Sony intend to bring out the replacement in 7/8 years, but continue to support the PS3 until it reaches the 10year mark.
