SCEA: No plans for silver PS3 in North America
Do you remember last generation when Japan seemingly received new colored PS2s each week and then Sony never bothered to bring them to the West until much, much later? Well, it appears as if that trend is continuing with the PlayStation 3 as Sony Japan announced that the 40GB Satin Silver PS3 will hit Japan early next month. But do you think Sony Computer Entertainment America has plans to do the same? Not so much according to an SCEA representative who told IGN, "there are no plans for a silver PS3 in North America at this time."
While the news is disappointing for those few gamers who have been holding off for a different colored PS3, we rest assured knowing that Sony will surely bring these over at some point. After all, didn't the PSP just receive a silver makeover?

No idea when/if Sony plans on releasing the Silver models in the US and/or Europe. But that statement from Sony doesn't really confirm or deny anything. Its a stock response actually meaning 'nothing is officially announced yet'. While I don't think it will happen SCEA could very well still announce bringing the silver model to the US tomorrow and still claim that the 'here are no plans for a silver PS3 in North America at this time' was correct per yesterday (today).

Exactly. "We have no plans at this time" is what they usually say- emphasis on the 'at this time' line.
Also, they haven't denied the white PS3 yet, so why say we aren't getting colored PS3's if the white one is still possible?

Just import them over, the games are region free anyways. =P

i dont think movies are though. not sure about it at all but i thought i read that somewhere.
either way, i would love to see them release multiple colors in the rest of the world as well as Japan since Nintendo can tell you that multiple colors generate sales. but at the same time, i doubt many people would be willing to rebuy a $400+ console as apposed to a $130 one.

The black console still looks the best anyway

i agree. the black one is so sleek plus it matches my PSP and HDTV. i think i remembered seeing a dark blue one at one point too that i did like though.

Why doesn't Sony just offer these to the rest of the world on a special-order basis?
EvilWalksWithMe @ Feb 6th 2008 11:25AM
Who cares? That silver one is hideous. It actually doesn't accomplish anything other than making it look cheap. And that really isn't the image I think Sony want to portray. Maybe it will do great in Japan, infact it probably will, but it won't anywhere else.

the reason we are always behind or completely excluded from bundles, colors, and accessories is because we are very hit or miss. either we love it or we hate it. and since the majority of the US market are bandwagoners they cant get too creative without the fear of losing money . we are very Black and White. while it wouldnt bother me to see a RED. Purple. Orange. or a Clear ps3 to some people its just too weird. The japanese culture is bright, colorful, just different
Popfrogs @ Feb 6th 2008 6:47PM
Bright and colorful indeed, for who else could bring us Hentai?

*shrugs* I've always thought the different coloured versions of consoles looked pretty naff and considered them nothing but a gimmick.
Anyways the shiny black standard PS3 looks great. :)

Why does Japan get a million different colors, but we get stuck with the same bullshit color for the systems life span just about?
