Payton misquoted: No need for MGS4 to sell a million at launch

It was reported by many sites (including us) that MGS4 would need to sell a million copies on day one in order to make it profitable due to high production costs. It now seems "that million dollar figure is incorrect. I don't even know how many figures we'd need to sell to be profitable." No doubt MSG4 will sell excellently and will reach well above a million units during its lifetime. The game is due out within the next few months, though an official release date hasn't yet been pinned down. We'll keep you abreast of any developments.

I've always known this was untrue... Just because you sell a million units on the first day doesn't mean it'll make any difference.
A week or two weeks, or three. Youre still going to make a profit.

Old ... everyone knew this allready ... common , 1 million on day 1 is foolish :P

Probably *will* sell more than a million on day one but who cares. When is the release date?!?!?!
Trev @ Feb 8th 2008 1:15PM
Gamestop has it set for June 18th, and I've heard other sources say "in june" some with the date and some without, so I think that's about as reliable as we get right now.

Either way i think it WILL sell a million on first day. If you remember MGS2 held the (then) record for most copies of a game sold in its first 3 days. If this doesnt sell a million in 24 hours I dont know what will. Afterall what is everyone waiting for, FF13?

I can't wait for this game. I haven't played any of the other MGS games (I know I know, that makes me a terrible person), but this one looks so damn good.... I played a lot of Splinter Cell on my PC and this looks similar, if a bit more actiony (which is fine by me).

MGS4 is the final part of the "trilogy" about Solid Snake. One of the biggest draws of this game is that lots of answers of questions will be revealed. I suggest catching up on the series by picking the new MGS collection that's going to be coming out soon or atleast reading up on it through gamefaqs or even buying the digital graphic novel for the psp.

Is this to *sell* a million units or *make* a million bucks, because the two are quite different and the story seems to contradict itself on this point
Either way I'm pretty sure MGS will do very well indeed once (if) it's released

Nice, but... who's Ryan Payton???
Justin @ Feb 9th 2008 12:33AM
Assistant Producer of MGS4...
and Kojima Productions

I agree...wtf is "if". There's no doubt that Kojima's final MGS masterpiece will come out this year. Konami is one of the few companies that doesn't rush crap to market (EA) just to turn a buck. They still understand that quality takes time.

I always kinda doubted it was true, like if they only sold 6-700,000 day one in, say, North America (3-4 in Japan), they suddenly fail to be make a profit on the game?
Good to have that cleared up
Microswirl @ Feb 8th 2008 11:15PM
Ryan Payton needs to get that money to the bank before midnight on June 18th or else he'll lose and family farm!
... and his PS3 will turn BACK into a pumpkin! Oh teh noes!!!
Sergorn @ Feb 11th 2008 5:35PM
He actually said that already a few weeks ago on his own Podcast
