This fan-made PSP redesign is sexy
A new PSP isn't likely to come any time soon. However, that hasn't stopped this designer from making his own concept design. We have to admit, this is really quite attractive. When closed, the unit looks very iPhone-esque, with a sexy PlayStation button that would act like the PSP's "Home" button.
When slid open, the unit reveals a D-Pad, two analog nubs, and the face buttons -- all in a super-slim case. We know it isn't real, but we want it! Perhaps, the next generation of PSP will look something like this.

The buttons seem slightly impractical, otherwise, DO WANT!!!
Lars @ Feb 11th 2008 5:01PM
I agree. The button placement seems near unusable. Second stick is good, and I hope it has L&R 1&2.
Otherwise it looks good. The sliding screen seems a bit fragile though.
Brello @ Feb 11th 2008 12:48PM
Not sure how the UMD drive and battery could fit anywhere on that thing, but it looks alright! I would expect the next iteration to have either a glass screen or a clamshell design. The current screen can be scratched a bit too easily.
aaron_k7 @ Feb 11th 2008 12:51PM
The next PSP needs to have its own hard drive. Maybe they could even have a NAND drive perfected by then??? That would be expensive, but give it time I guess...
jamma @ Feb 11th 2008 1:31PM
The screen looks awesome, but the buttons look a nightmare. there's not enough real estate around them to be comfortable for constant use.
and i'd much prefer L/R keys to a 2nd analogue stick, unless both is too much to ask
HAAS599 @ Feb 11th 2008 1:38PM
make it thicker for a bigger battery or a harddrive. you need more to grab on to.
anyways great concept, Im really interested what a "truly new" redisigned psp is going to look like. Will it be called psp2?
FOXHOUND @ Feb 11th 2008 1:39PM
Pretty slick artwork, no complaints on that... Ergonomically speaking however, I'd say it'd be better used for a SonyEricsson phone or something than a PSP; especially if the L/R buttons are difficult to use or press. In addition, it would definitely need to be packaged with some kind of soft case or holster to protect that nice looking screen. Lastly, touchpad face buttons would probably be a better option than that type, which would save on thickness of the device. All of the above are really nit-picky stuff though... I like this idea's concept thus far.

this psp is hot
but the next psp do need a harddrive, but have the memory stick slot for extra memory
and a much better battery life
but i like how the control n button lay out
sony plz make it, or sumthin like
Brian @ Feb 11th 2008 2:24PM
Hmmmm that's a nice look but the screen would need to be scratch proof, looks like it's set up for touch controls, and the side away controls look cool. But I wonder where the L/R buttons are, also instead of hiding the controls make a keyboard there and put the control on the sides of the screen like they are now.
Simon Revell @ Feb 11th 2008 2:27PM
First glance it looks amazing...
but looking closer, the L/R 1/2 buttons just seem to be in the wrong place...i can't imagine how it would be possible to hit two or three of those buttons whilst trying to use other buttons like the analogue sticks...
Still, slick screen and a home button seem perfect.
perhaps, instead of the whole thing coming down from the screen...imagine that section split in two and those two sections coming down from behind the screen and moving apart from each other to create a upside down V formation...i think whilst looking cool, it would also be far more comfortable and easy to control, plus the L/R 1/2 buttons could be placed in more traditional locations

Any PSP mod without a new D-pad/analog is kind of pointless.
Noshino @ Feb 11th 2008 3:52PM
what's wrong with the D-pad? actually, I loves my D-pad!
Lars @ Feb 11th 2008 4:57PM
The PS d-pad is the best of any I've used. So much better being buttons like that instead of a teeter-totter like other systems. Also the PSP analog is really nice! I was really surprised when I first used it. Amazingly compact too, while still being very usable.
Brello @ Feb 11th 2008 6:32PM
I wish the analog didn't have such a strong spring, it slips out from under my thumb now and then. The dpad on the slim seems quite alright to me.
Merc25 @ Feb 11th 2008 3:51PM
looks cool but fails on the L1/R1 buttons, i would prefer L2/R2 over a second nub, but if we are striving for all the ps2/ps3 controller functions then L3/R3 are my tertiary item.
alessar @ Feb 18th 2008 11:12AM
Actually, it has L1L2 R1R2 buttons. They're just superflat on the side of the case. (Zoom in on the pictures to see them better.)
natetheartist @ Feb 11th 2008 4:50PM
It's a cool design, and it's creative. Unfortunately it looks rather uncomfortable. the L and R buttons seem like they'd be a hassle to press, the entire thing would be top heavy (think of holding it at the base with that big heavy screen slid out, supported by nothing), and i have to mention the fact that a qwerty keypad could easily have been fit in there somewhere. Like a few posters before had already mentioned, what the PSP really needs is a hard drive, a workable amount of RAM, some basic mini apps (calculator, text editor, ect.), more usb peripheral support for things like keyboards, external hard drives, 3rd party webcams, and the ability to run more than one application at a time (ie; internet and music).
thissceneisdead @ Feb 14th 2008 1:48PM
you called it dude.
that would be amazing x 50.
DMeisterJ @ Feb 11th 2008 3:55PM
Kinda cool, kinda not.
First, am I the only one who thinks that the screen is TOO big, especially in proportion to the buttons? I think that the regular PSP screen is as big as it should get, maybe it can go as high as 5.2 inches, but it's pretty good here. And me thinks the analog sticks are way too close for comfort. But I like the idea of a touch screen, for navigating the XMB and whatnot, and as a keyboard when you're online, but then using the actual controls during a game... That'd be awesome.

Oh Comon ppl! Concepts can't be just beautiful! They have to be user friendly too! Just look at the damn L2, L1 or R2, R1 buttons! How the hell R U gonna push those damn buttons! If you think about it, your fingers curl on top left and top right edges of the device so there is no WAY to push those (or you can push them with PAIN!). Think a little first! I'm just looking through websites and seeing all the websites are writing about this damn thing!

I think it'll work. Flash drive, L&R 1-3, watch movies or listen to mp3's while its in the closed position for comfort. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but add a touch screen for simple media controls and your good to go. I'd buy it, and be willing to spend >$300. phuck ipods...
Vincent @ Feb 11th 2008 6:54PM
No, I don't want a psp with no "R1 and L1" buttons. And plus, just by looking at the design, it's difficult to hold on to.
James @ Feb 12th 2008 8:13AM
Yea, so the guy just wanted to make something pretty rather than usable. Button placement is completely off. Clearly not an industrial or usability designer. Looks uncomfy as hell. Oh and it's been ripped from i-River.
Also whats with the bite mark on one corner?
Brello @ Feb 12th 2008 11:59AM
I'm not sure you could even hit the up or triangle buttons without your fingernail getting caught on the screen. Form over function for the lose, on this one.
Alien @ Feb 12th 2008 9:27AM
Wow ... it actually looks cool :) I would really want the PSP2 to lok similar :D
meshgiath @ Feb 12th 2008 6:19PM
http://www.oqo.com . It looks good, but it's not original. It is, however in keeping with Sony's design/PR/marketing/Executive department's track record: not an original idea amongst them.
Game_playa @ Feb 12th 2008 10:17PM
I think the Psp2 will be called P2P or 2SP or 2s2
Danny @ Feb 13th 2008 12:12AM
OMG OMG MAKE THIS PSP NOW!!!!! I WILL BUY SO MANY OF THEM ILL MAKE U RICH MYSELF
michael @ Feb 13th 2008 5:15AM
sony should merge the next psp with the sony milo 2. add it phone capabilities a qwerty keypad, a touch screen, a 32/64gb nand flash memory, a user friendly OS. that would make it the ultimate piece of hardware everyone would get. and basically an ipod/iphone/DS killer , nobody could beat sony because they'd be the only one who'd offers it all.(video game/phone/mp3 player/video player/internet/etc)
MasterMind @ Feb 15th 2008 9:00PM
SONY has already made that thing! It has a 48GB SSD and MS Duo slot, 1GB RAM, a f***ing beautiful 4.5inch or so touch screen (1024x768), qwerty slide-up keyboard, 2USB, webcam etc... It's called a Vaio UX, runs WinVista and costs $2.500
Come on man, you can't expect SONY to get all that harware on such a small device and sell it a few hundred bucks!
Ace @ Feb 14th 2008 2:32PM
Looks cool. Nice work! Anyone know what game is on the screen?
markku @ Feb 14th 2008 2:53PM
I just have to say one thing.. i really hate the analog stick in every psp cause it's just too low my thumb gets sore and it's not that accurate. well thats just my opinion
Mr.Bitches @ Feb 25th 2008 8:22PM
why dont the just leave it the with the same design but with a touch screen that slides up with a keybord
Wesley @ Feb 15th 2008 4:41PM
Let me know when I can buy this Sony!
Ozmer @ Feb 16th 2008 10:01AM
I really like this design concept. While the slider idea isn't a new one in general, it fits the personality of the PSP and it's users as a high-end tech feature.
There are two things you could add to this that would make me run out and buy one to replace my current PSP:
1.) Built-in Screen Protection - Even if it was just a hard plastic sleeve that clipped on the front when not in use and on the back when you were playing.
2.) Built-in QWERTY Keyboard - My (now old) LG phone was one of the first with the flip open keyboard, and it makes it 100x easier to type on than my PSP. Even a mobile-sized QWERTY keyboard would go a long way in making the PSP more user friendly. And with your design it seems like it would be really simple to have the screen slide just another 1.5" and reveal a tiny keyboard.
Just two thoughts, though as is, this thing rocks.
Henrik @ Feb 20th 2008 10:02AM
This is a great design! Looks awsome, some modding to the grip seems to be needed but if the psp got a new design this should be it!
MISCONFESS @ Mar 1st 2008 2:17AM
OMG!..MADE IN CHINA AGAIN?
Liam @ Mar 28th 2008 6:03PM
i think it is a great design except for the LR buttons pretty much flush with the surface on the right side.
with improvements on new battery tech then it could well have a battery and umd housing in it
Liam @ Mar 28th 2008 6:04PM
sorry i mean the left side
