NPD: PS3 nearly matches Wii, outsells 360 in January
Looks like PS3 really is gaining momentum. January showed some incredible performance for Sony's newest home console, as it was able to beat its major competitor, the Xbox 360. In fact, it almost sold as much as the Wii, falling short only a measly 5k systems for the month. Here are the numbers:
- Wii: 274K
- PS3: 269K
- PS2: 264K
- DS Lite: 251K
- Xbox 360: 230K
- PSP: 230K
There's still a long way to go in this console war, but January has been quite favorable for Sony. Will Sony be able to capitalize on this newfound momentum? With a killer line-up of games for the rest of year, we'd like to think so. Update: Comment from SCEA's Jack Tretton, after the cut.

"Coming off a great holiday sales season we see strong momentum behind PS3 in 2008, and feel confident about the year ahead. We have an exceptionally diverse lineup of exclusive games, from Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resistance 2 to more mainstream games such as LittleBigPlanet and SingStar. Beyond that, we have Blu-ray emerging as the de facto high def standard, the developer community is hitting their stride, consumers are recognizing the tremendous value and innovative services such as PlayStation Home are all in the works, so this is definitely shaping up to be a breakthrough year for us." - Jack Tretton, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America

Yeah, except they don't show the real numbers. Lying by omission is still lying.

- PS3: 269K \/528K (66%)
- PS2: 264K \/836K (76%)
- DS Lite: 251K \/2.22m (90%)
- PSP: 230K \/830K (78%)
- Xbox 360: 230K \/1.03m (82%)
Kspraydad @ Feb 14th 2008 11:10PM
Um...we already know Decembers numbers...this is a post about January numbers.
It would be 'lying' or an 'omission' if this post was about 2 months of sales.
Stop being an @ss, mkay?

yea they are certainly there screaming "but the 360 is having shortages right now!"
great for the PS3 and PSP though no matter what the circumstances. PS3 lost the least amount of momentum coming off the holidays which is great news.
Carlton @ Feb 15th 2008 9:38AM
Well, worldwide the PS2 has been outselling the 360 almost every week.
Andy @ Feb 14th 2008 7:42PM
Congratulations Sony.
Are these numbers for the whole world of just the us of a?
playcrackthesky @ Feb 14th 2008 7:52PM
That's what i'd like to know mate. PS2 still on fire, oh how I wish some of those guys would finally make the switch over to ps3.
Kspraydad @ Feb 14th 2008 7:54PM
NPD is USA
jtedesco33 @ Feb 14th 2008 7:43PM
I highly doubt anyone is willing to attribute this to the shortages of the Wii and 360 I mean this is a fanboy themed site.
Kspraydad @ Feb 14th 2008 7:46PM
MS 'conveniently' mentions shortages 1 day before NPD and you actually believe that?
eugene @ Feb 14th 2008 8:42PM
I haven't seen a 360 at my local targets for a month now, so I believe em.
The Sound @ Feb 14th 2008 9:24PM
They all went to fix the RRoD that over 1/3 of people have had.
rob @ Feb 15th 2008 12:12AM
I see 360s everywhere here, a lot in all 3 of the PnP shops, a lot at Target (2 of them), Bestbuy, Walmart, and 2 Gamestop.
Maybe not A LOT at Target, but at least 1 in all of those places here just like the PS3.
Fiddlesworth @ Feb 14th 2008 7:44PM
*hugs PS3, PS2, PSP*
Knew you could do it, kid. :D
Release those AAA PS3 games and lets see some REAL PS3 numbers! :) :) :)
Andy @ Feb 14th 2008 7:45PM
A good Christmas filled with good games, means word of mouth. Which until recently has been severely lacking.
Fiddlesworth @ Feb 14th 2008 7:46PM
360 shortages? Don't make me laugh, they knew what was coming so they pre-spun some BS that even Engadget picked up on.
jtedesco33 @ Feb 14th 2008 8:57PM
Between Erie PA, and Meadville, PA Erie being the fourth largest city in PA there are very few systems to be found. I know because I have been looking to buy one for my friends birthday. After two months of looking I found ONE at a Walmart in BFE.
I am far from a fanboy for any console, maybe it's just in my area but 360's are hard to find. If the rest of your areas have tons of 360's then where I live must be experiencing a shortage, that no one else is.
Sain @ Feb 15th 2008 8:53PM
@jtdes - Don't you think this shortage is a little to convenient? They ONLY mention it on NPD day, not before it....?
And there are plenty of 360s where I am.
Dreadhead541 @ Feb 14th 2008 7:51PM
it's about time
2Perfect @ Feb 14th 2008 7:52PM
PS2 number just made my day lol... even the psp number lol :S equal to xbox? lol.
Shortages? Who's fault is that?
bizdady @ Feb 14th 2008 7:54PM
damn look at that PS2 run lol
Dnice @ Feb 14th 2008 8:00PM
Why is everyone getting all crazy? it was one month, and all of the #'s under 300K?
chibi @ Feb 14th 2008 8:16PM
yea and a million dollars is just spare change
Ranus Studios @ Feb 14th 2008 8:44PM
To be fair, every console plummeted in sales. A few of them dropped a good million.
'Twas the season, I suppose.
lord_monkey @ Feb 14th 2008 8:45PM
300kconsloes is about 120 million dollars ok buddy
John @ Feb 14th 2008 8:58PM
Congrats sony fanboys. I have to give it to the ps3, it took advantage of the 360 shortages and was able to surpass the 360 in sales by a paltry 39,000 consoles. You should all be proud!! LOL!!
Melchezidek @ Feb 14th 2008 9:14PM
Amazing how when the PS3 outsells the 360 for the first time ever that the comments section is absent of all the 360 "fanboys" spouting off recklessly about their favorite console's dominance. Now, I have admittedly posted comments on this blog before that, while definitely not "fanboyish" could easily be mistaken as such.
However, today I am only commenting to eat a little crow. I must admit that I honestly did not think that the PS3 would ever outsell the 360 in any given month in 2008. Alas, I was wrong.
Ether02 @ Feb 14th 2008 9:27PM
that's funny b/c I seen a few x-bot comments in this thread already

F-yeah Eat that Xbots!!!
Phoenix8387 @ Feb 14th 2008 9:52PM
Congratz to Sony for gaining some huge momentum.
As far as the 360 shortages go, they're just trying to be like Nintendo saying demand is exceeding supply. That and they want to try to get all those faulty 360s off the shelves before they let out a new wave that last a full 6 months and take away the 3 year warranty on those systems.
xXcrisisXx @ Feb 14th 2008 10:45PM
the 360 is sold out everywhere. it was never advertised all month in retailers ads because they had none in stock. thats why it lost.
SharpShooter @ Feb 14th 2008 10:55PM
Come to Canada, they have walls of 360s at futureshop and bestbuy. Also, it isn't amazing that the ps3 has outsold the 360 (The ps3 has been doing that for months worldwide). It's amazing because the ps3 beat it in the US, the 360s biggest market. It's like the 360 beating the ps3 in japan.
Kspraydad @ Feb 14th 2008 11:16PM
Chris...you are full of crap. Maybe you should look in an electronics store instead of your local dress shop.
Will the PS3 selling more be sustainable...prob not in the short term but they will be closer this year. You have both Activision and EA stating that sales will be close in the US.
Stop being a troll and congratulate SONY for making it through a tough year and staying in the 'game'...it only makes for better games/consoles for all gamers.
dartmerc @ Feb 15th 2008 12:13AM
How much does MS pay you? lol, you MS fanboys are so funny
Matt @ Feb 15th 2008 12:22AM
There were 360 shortages and I don't believe anyone mentioned the blu-ray victory. I know several people that went out and bought a PS3 just because of the blu-ray victory. Again, the proof of this is the fact that the attachment rate for PS3 is weak and it still fails to sell a lot of games despite selling a decent amount of systems. It's funny that 269,000 systems were sold yet one PS3 game just barely made the top ten with just 140,000 units sold. Hmmm, wonder why? Maybe because they are watching their blu-ray movies. I think so.
Phizzy @ Feb 15th 2008 12:31AM
Or, you know, people could all be buying different games as opposed to everyone buying one game?
Carlton @ Feb 15th 2008 10:21AM
Actually, the PS3 attach-rate is going up in the US, while the 360 attach-rate is going down.
360 software sold around 2x more than PS3 software in January, but it has an install base that is around 3x.
Do the maths.
game-daddy57 @ Feb 15th 2008 12:42AM
It's about time people start seeing the PS3 for what is really is, THE superior console. Way to go Sony. Now give me Home and MGS4 so we can put the final nail in the coffin. ps 360's are crap
leiwei @ Feb 15th 2008 1:15AM
Funny but you see 360s everywhere here in CA.
darth balls @ Feb 15th 2008 12:01PM
That is only because most Canadians cant count that high...
Carlton @ Feb 15th 2008 10:22AM
@ darth balls
I think you need to re-read what you said.
It doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and given that you were trying to suggest that Canadians are stupid, it is bitterly ironic (unless of course you are Canadian).
